I certainly hope that everyone has two pairs of pants on the ready, because Sega decided to give everyone a gift today. The gift of Sonic Generations. Yes, that is the title. Yes, the rumors are true: classic levels all over the place. And yes, it looks to the best Sonic game in a decade. Posted all over the place from Sega’s official blog to C&VG and IGN, we get a game that just screams “oh man, they actually looked at all the poses Ohshima drew oh god look Sonic is holding his hand over his eyes and he even has an edge animation and he taps his foot and 1991 is the future.”
For the curious: the game has a story. Written by the guys who did Sonic Colors, it seems some unknown enemy has sent Modern Sonic back in time, creating “time holes” that make the two Sonic’s meet. Though looking to be a Sonic-only affair play-wise, other Sonic characters are supposed to show their mugs all over the place. Classic Tails? Amy Rose? I certainly hope so. As for gameplay (which is one of the most important things if you’ve forgotten), the control scheme is meant to actually be different for both – Classic Sonic gets the time-tested 2D style, with the classic spin attack and spin dash being his main arsenal here. But don’t worry, if you really just want to blast through everything, Modern Sonic will let you do that in an Unleashed/Colors style, with homing attacks and boosts and everything else. It may be weird to see Modern Sonic grinding in the Green Hill Zone, but you can’t help but feel a little warm and fuzzy seeing Classic Sonic run through the level again. And actually jumping and stopping and doing platform-y things. At the moment, all we know is that the Green Hill Zone will be there, but Sega has promised a journey “through three defining eras,” the originals, the Dreamcast and the modern era all showcased in this celebration of all things Sonic. And in brilliant HD to boot.
Need more? Of course you do. All the major gaming sites are all over it, with coverage on Gamespot (including an interview with Takashi Iizuka), IGN, Joystick, …if you want to see more screenshots, stroll over to CVG’s page which is filled with both Classic and Modern tearin’ up that checkered hillside. But you want more. Of course you do. That is why a litlte known Spanish site known as MeriStation has footage of the game. Not just in trailer form, but with the HUD in plain site with real people trying it out for the first time. Showing off the classic loops, the enemies, the springs… it starts off familiar, but as the level progresses, it shows that this just the same level but with a new coat of paint, but instead a new experience in familiar territory. Truly the “Sonic Remix” the fans wanted but weren’t necessarily expecting. Both Classic and Modern Sonic get their own version of the classic tunes, even! And oh man, is that Classic Eggman on the sign post? With blue glasses even!
There are so many good bits and pieces in each piece of coverage that it could fill up numerous articles, but the videos speak for themselves. Either way, it certainly looks to be shaping up to be a Dreams Come True (ohoho see what I did there) for any Sonic fan. Sure, it may feel wrong to get excited about a new Sonic game, but go on. It’s ok, we won’t tell anyone.

It looks great. Considering actually buying an xbox or PS3 just for this game.
Also it’s cool that Sega can’t really tease us like bitches Sonic 4 style because the gameplay footage is right fucking there.
This Game looks awesome! Planning on getting it first day out!
Billy Gene is not my article.
Anyway, David. As per-usual great article, good read!
This is what happens when I schedule posts to run and someone beats it out. Total derp on my part!
here more one vido shoing more game plauy and izuka interview ..

ho good ! looking for my last comment…. i need one new key board 0.o !
Gameplay looks very nice indeed. Even though the story doesn’t seem to be as original it is all redeemed by the fact that it’s the same writers from Sonic Colors. However, go to 0:18 and listen carefully. This could most likely just be a placeholder, but perhaps it could just be Roger using his “young voice” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrnFlMBnBek&feature=related) or even “younger voice” for Classic Sonic. That’s just a theroy though. Whatever the case this game’s future looks very bright at the moment.
What r u talking about?
I dont hear anything at 18 and those are the slowed down roger clips…
I really wish they would make this multi platform. I’d hate to waste all my money on a 360 or PS3 JUST for this game.
But it IS multiplatform. 360 and PS3. :3
Harhar. In all seriousness he meant being for more platforms, but obviously the definition of “multiplatform” usually meant all platforms available.
I believe the reason right now that it’s not available for Wii/DS/3DS is ’cause the Modern Sonic gameplay is CLEARLY based off of Unleashed’s programming.
Aaaaaand you’re STILL going too fast to see whatever the fuck’s in front of you.
Nicely played, Sega.
Admittedly though, I can dig the 2.5D style, and the level design is looking good from the gameplay vids.
Really? for csonic?
I could follow it extremely well.
maybe it’s because I play a lot of Melee. hahaha.
Well gee, maybe you could try, I don’t know, NOT boosting?
I don’t know about you buddy but I was able to tell perfectly fine.
In BOTH playstyles.
This game is simply amazing! Now I’m really starting to think that Sonic 4, together with Sonic Colors (which wasn’t a bad game) was just some ruse SEGA was making to troll us, yet give us the news that Sonic Generations was going to come out at the same time. I dunno. I really shouldn’t question so much, because this game is just great!
I can see that we still will only be able to play as Sonic *bangs head on desk* I want to play as knuckles D:. Hopefully they dont have another corny main theme. The last good main theme song was Sonic Adventure D:
How can you not like Live & Learn?
I know, right? When was the last time Tails was playable? Sheesh. I cannot, however, agree with your view on the themes. They all embody their games nicely, and sound good too.
…
For once, boostboostboost gameplay in 3D works. Spinning through a tunnel(literally), diving into a waterfall, and grinding through the never-before-seen underground of Green Hill Zone, will a huge SDURF to boot. SEGA definitely wants to go over the top for 3D gameplay, but deliver fun and enticing 2D gameplay at the same time. Props, SEGA. You’ve actually left me with no complaints.
You’d be right about that, the underground of Green Hill was unseen except for some parts which Sonic could break through in the original!
And you meant Surf when you said “Sdurf” didn’t you?
SDURF = Stupid Dumb Unnamed Robot Fish. :3
Oh, dem enemies. I might study what the thing is more carefully, might be an oversized version of an enemy, may be something new (after all, there IS a new enemy on the loose) And yes, there are some pieces of terminology I may not know yet.
The part of article about levels in “interview” movie seems… contradictory.
What I do want to know about SG (?) is how many zones and how big are going to be there, will the game include special stages and will there be more characters. Because in order to play this thing I have to buy a X360/PS3, Generations must be.. big to justify order in my case. Real talk.
SEGA, admit it. Without Sonic Fan Remix, this game wouldn’t freakin’ exist. Mercury, Pelikan13, and SEGA alike, thank you for making this possible.
And they say fans can’t change anything.
Dude, this game would have had to have been in production for over a year by now. They started it before Fan Remix ever even released anything.
Yeah, I’m sure the development of this game happened undercover for a while now, considering how refined everything seems to be in its “beta” stage, and the fact this is suppose to be released sometime this year. Though, I swear, if this ends up being another rush-job…
pretty sure this game was in development before sonic fan remix was released.
-starts looking for money for a 360 in case no nintendo version is announced even after e3-
Seeing as how they’ve had fairly consistent Modern Sonic gameplay the last couple of games, it’s all depending on that side-scrolling work to make or break it this time around: Good jumping, use of acceleration, all that noise.
Still for what I see here so far, I will buy this game, and I will like it. A lot.
All I have to say is amazing.
Funny how this comes just after Palm Sunday. Sonic may just Ride On In Majesty after all…
This is Sega saying “suck my balls” to Sonic Fan Remix.
This comment reminds me of that one ScrewAttack video where Jose teabags Chad for 10 minutes saying “BALLS IN YO’ FACE!”
We wouldn’t have this game without Sonic Fan Remix, so uh… no?
I think what Nickster99 meant is that they’re sick of fan games that are better (in a fan’s view) than them. Yes, you are right, but he most likely didn’t mean that.
Im just worried the 2.5 segments will just be the 2d segments from colors and be difficult to play, if they dont modify the physics then I dont see the point. Having said that I am a bit excited….maybe, I said the same thing about Sonic 4….but it looks sooo cool …sniff
Uhm…if you’re going to say that, you’re going to say the same thing as “Modern Sonic is going to play like Unleashed” because COLOURS BASES ITS GAMEPLAY OFF OF UNLEASHED! And clearly it follows Unleashed more because the boosting animation comes straight from the Hedgehog Engine version (as I dub the PS3/360 versions, since they run on it)
Is it just me, or does Classic Sonic look fucking tiny in the actual gameplay? Or have they just made Green Hill Zone massive for no reason? That’s my only complaint; I’m actually very aroused about everything else.
Actually I think both happened; he’s small and GHZ is huge. But hey, young Sonic is a small hedgehog. 😛
It’s ok I already expected this..
Sega got something right!?!?!? YES! Or at least, it appears so. This teaser is only that, a teaser… but it is incredibly promising. I think they’ve been listening to the fans =)
Pretty much exactly as a predicted Modern Sonic plays like a modern game and Classic Sonic will play more like the genesis games. I’m concerned that the physics might be less than classic though.
Does that mean we can play as dreamcast sonic?
Because I love knowing when people are going to crash.
There should be absolutely 0 complaints now. This satisfies EVERYONE.
the buckles on c.sonic, there might be bitchin about that.
Classic Sonic always had buckles.
http://nfggames.com/games/sonicsprites/sonics_standing_b.png
http://www.freewebs.com/16bitlove/sonic_1.jpeg
I can’t see it.
The buckles are stupid though, even if they were in some early art or something.
I lol’d.
nope.avi
People have actually found things to bitch about.
Oh Oh you know some people are gonna give hate on anything, like glasses on classic Buttnik.
You know, years now, I’ve comtemplated about getting a 360. I’m not buying the system. I’m just pre-ordering this game, going to a friend’s house, and using his 360 just to play this game. Yeah, I’m an ass, Microsoft. 8D
I am really looking forward to this game
looking really good, i’m loving both 3D and 2D sections, my only complaint is that after this SEGA will go back to the boost-boost-boost gameplay again, i really hope they’ll keep this formula with later Sonic games too, classic or modern it shouldn’t only be boosting!
Looks really good, but I can’t have been the only one to notice that right at the very end of the gameplay video, Sonic’s life count jumps from 7 to 2. Was that just an incredibly well-done cut, or…?
I don’t know. Still seems something to be reasonably excited about.
Your right 😛
The time also jumps a minute forward and the rings gain 30 or so. It is definitely a well done cut.
Nah I noticed it, and yes it was edited.
No Wii still? FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
This looks so very very promising! Sonic Team could very well revitalise the series with this game.
Sonic Team can suck my bawlz! They always seem to mess things up. It may just be a little mess up but they always find a way, when we had STI and all that jazz working on Sonic games you hardly ever saw mess ups.
If you don’t mind me saying, Sega’s lighting on that GFX engine (presumably Hedgehog Engine) is a bit too strong, as it’s made Classic Sonic look SICK at the beginning.
I honestly cannot wait for this game. I wonder if I’ll still be able to speedrun GHZ with classic Sonic. Gah! This needs to hurry up and come out 😀
I only have to say that right now I need new pants! This looks awesome! I think I will play both classic and modern levels.
The appearance of many other characters of Sonic games doesn’t convince me, I don’t mind playing with Tails or Knuckles, but if Rouge, Amy, Omega, the werehog,… appear, they shouldn’t be playable. Anyway, my biggest fear is to see Princess Elise in this game.
By the moment I thank Sega for this game, maybe later I will ask them to go to hell, as before with Unleashed and Episode I.
Hot Dang! Looks like SEGA did a lot more than bring back classic physics. I don’t know if anybody asked this yet, but considering game covers are different per region, could we see American Sonic on the US box art? And the European cover could feature Modern and Classic standing side by side, wagging their index fingers, with various game elements in the background! This may not happen, but we can all dream, I suppose…(<–Sonic MegaMix quote u c wat i did):3
Now that would be a treat. I hope they do that! 😀
Looks impressive but I’m not going to get too excited because I don’t want to set myself up for disappointment. The only thing that would hype me is Knuckles being playable in his classic syle of gameplay.
Am I the only one who just sees Sonic Colours sans wisps featuring a small Classic Sonic running half-uncontrollably through a giant Green Hill Zone with slightly better level design than that of Colours?
No Redhot, you are not. I have major concerns that there is a bottomless pit below the Sonic 2 style Mobius strip and that the game may even force you through it, and even larger concerns that you will not be able to explore parts of the level after you pass them like in Colors. Like after the mobius strip, if you try to backtrack, there may be an invisible wall, same applies for the section around 25 seconds. The video makes me think that the player is forced through large portions of the levels, as was so in Colors. Only time will reveal the truth, but the gameplay video left me with the same impression as you, here we go again.
Apparently my browser decided it was a good idea to make my post double when I hit refresh to check for replies. Also, at least they brought back classic springs, something I’ve wanted since Adventure.
3D sections look awesome. 2D sections look meh. It´s just Unleashed with different models, the core gameplay it´s the same: Awesome for 3D and bland for 2D.
I JUST NOTICED SOMTHING!!! see the strange bubbles behind the text? its extremely simerlar to the background of the text in the 3ds trailers!!! maybe theres a 3ds version!!!
Damn, the only thing that comes to mind that sucks is there are way too many good levels o be remade in awesome HD (3d even on ps3?). So even though the game looks like it’s gonna rock, I can’t help but know that a level or two will be left out.
Wow. Wow. Wow. I had a fangasm just now. This game actually is designed to appeal to everyone.
Unfortunately, I am scum. I have a complaint. What about 1998-06 (with the exeption of Rush) Sonic? I mean come on, the difference between Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic is more than green eyes! 98-06 Sonic could spindash, light attack, make tornadoes, and more. Plus, he could, you know, turn in 3D as opposed to steering awkwardly left and right. I should note that the Dimps-style gameplay I’m usually wary of actually looks really diverse and fun here.
The point I’m trying to make here is that there’s around 7 years of difference & evolution between “momentum, platforming, and speed” and “run fast, straight, and blurry”. I think it has potential to stand out.
I have to admit, I’m impressed. But I am not convinced. The graphics look absolutely amazing and the game play seems to be silky smooth. But Sega still has a lot of room for error, however. It seems too good to be true. But I guess we won’t know for sure until we actually get the controller in our hands to test this puppy out. I really am hoping this is Sonic’s time to shine, modern, classic, or otherwise. I just wish they could have been a wee bit more specific on the release date other than “Comming in 2011”. But I guess it’s better to be kinda vague than have a date set in stone and miss it.
Hey…I’m excited and I’m proud…
Either SEGA’s getting some old employees back…or they’re just finally getting it…
…after 17 years…=.=;;+
VIVA LA CLASSIC SONIC….!!!
