Mario And Sonic Go To Mini-Game War Again In London

Sonic Generations has commanded the attention of the fan base since its reveal earlier in the week. That still hasn’t stopped Sega from quietly confirming that Mario and Sonic will continue their bitter rivalry 20 years too late as they compete in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Excitement.

Although it’s another compilation of mini-games for the Nintendo Wii, Mario and Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games will be the series’ debut on the Nintendo 3DS. DS owners need not apply, as it looks like there’s no DS version planned.

New events include horseback riding and football (the non-American kind), meaning those still stuck in the ’90s can finally have Mario and Sonic face off for two halves of headbutts and red cards.

While it’s easy to brush the game aside as another collection of mini-games, having the two mascots face off in the Olympics served Sega well, as the games have so far been sleeper hits for the company, selling over 19 million copies globally.

No release date has been penciled in for the title, but it’s safe to assume it will either be by year’s end or certainly before next year’s Olympic ceremonies begin.

This irritates me. Wii owners ONCE AGAIN get the crappy game, while the 360 and PS3 get the great one. I plan on getting a 360 to play Generations, but this still pisses me off.

    • Reply

Because Sonic Colors is a crappy game. All the 360/PS3 has over the Wii is Unleashed HD.

      • Reply

        That was sarcasm, right?
If it isn’t, god *inb4solaris* help you.

If you mean my comment on Colors, of course it was sarcasm.

      • Reply

not true, ASR was far better on 360 with the better HD graphics, better controls, added content, DLC …etc!

      • Reply

Sonic Colors was a good game. I’m talking about when the Wii got the dumbed down version of Unleashed. This is the same deal.

        • Reply

at lease with Unleashed we got something, we didn’t get Sonic 06 “and i liked that game”!

Isn’t there a rumor going around that Generations will be getting released on the wii too or am I dreaming?

        • Reply

@sonictopfan: I also liked Sonic 06, regardless of insane loading times (which I actually never noticed or cared about) I can’t stand Secret Rings.
          @Ravenfreak: You’re dreaming bud.

          • Never noticed them? What, did you go make a sandwich every time? :V

        • Reply

I guess I never really paid notice to them /shrug I was 11 after all, so it didn’t matter to me. All that mattered was that it was Sonic.

I was hoping for an actual team-up this time, but as long as this game is enjoyable, I see nothing wrong in accepting another Olympics game.

Did you like run the press statement through Google Translate English->French->German->English? Cause there’s some weird phrasing all up in there.

    • Reply

The joys of a Japanese translation translated into another language then translated from there to English.
I’ll put the proper English one when it comes out. Edit: Done. Just flew into the ol’ mailbox.

Why can’t we have Namco and SEGA? I’m pretty surprised that they haven’t thought of that yet 🙁

the chances of something like that happening would be if you dream about it. 😀

      • Reply

Screw that. I’ll just learn game creation and make the freaking thing myself. Chances are, it’ll take me years to finish, and it’ll STILL come out before a real one does.

      ‘Twas a rumour, my friend.
…by that same guy, if I recall correctly. Wentos.
…real talk? *someone tell me how to use that correctly*

NO MORE OLYMPIC GAMES. We want Sonic Generations on Nintendo systems, dammit! You’re STILL doing it wrong Sega. Horribly, horribly wrong.

    • Reply

When the Wii can support a massive HD game then tell me.

      • Reply

Better it be a game that doesn’t look HD than a shitty Mini game fest. Mario Galaxy was awesome, so we know that the wii can handle better than this. The question is, why haven’t we seen any better?

        • Reply

And plus, where’s Nintendo’s fucking Classic Sonic experience? In the numerous crappy ports collections? Hell no. We need a good Sonic game that doesn’t have ANY of Sonic’s friends, no speed boosters or Homing attack abuse, and absolutely NO mini games in them. If this is the “lovely” untitled Sonic game that was coming out for 3DS, I’m buying a 360 and saying fuck you to Nintendo.

        • Reply

…saying goodbye to a console solely for another company’s doing?
          WOW, that’s extremely sad.
Plus…if you’re really hoping for that one Sonic experience, you’re still not getting it (think: the other side of Sonic Generations)

        • Reply

Why not? On the wii all I’m gonna get is crappy minigame collections. On PS3 and 360 at least I’ll get fresh, new games that don’t feel like a watered down port or the same minigames with different characters or environments.

        • Reply

By ditching the Wii you’re missing out on quite a few good games. I’m not gonna take the time to list them, but I have a lot of games on /v/’s list.

        • Reply

Yeah, but those games are one in a million crappy collections of the same minigames. I won’t trash my wii, as I still have a couple good games for it, but that doesn’t mean that I’ll buy any more of those stupid shovelware titles hoping that one is at least good. I’ll probably buy the 360 version of Generations and use it in my friend’s 360. Nintendo always does this if you haven’t noticed. They make a few good, solid games; and then the rest are crappy platformers, ports, shovelware, or empty games that were converted to a minigame collection at the last minute.

Huh, another Olympic game? I’ll take it. Winter Olympics was suprisingly good and I’d love to get this. Course, I was really hoping for something among the lines of a cross-over, but oh well. We got Colors last year, I think the HD boys needed their day. Either way, I’m getting both games. I just really hope that this isn’t that 3DS title SEGA promised us this year. Then again, SEGA always turns to the expected.

Which it’s still hard even then to tell the winner. Mario’s conquered galaxies. Twice. Sonic’s conquered gravity through glitches. Twice.
          …THE RIVALRY.

Isnt it true that the xbox 360 and ps3 can handle allot more than the wii?
Isnt it true that the wii has more limitations than the xbox 360 and ps3?
Why should sega be forced to cater to the system that cant handle as much, its not segas fault that nintendo didnt put out a better system.
Is it not true that sega would have to spend a bunch of extra time making a version for the wii? Only to dumb down the game on that system?
I own both a wii and xbox 360, and i have major respect for nintendo but I say if sega wants to make a next generation game with great graphics then they shouldnt have to worry about catering to the wiis limitations.

One good thing about the IRL Olympics- it’s including Punkin Chunkin as an official competition. LOVE to see that in M&S2012. Though, instead of pumpkins, they launch goombas and Omochao.
