Monday Links: What It’s Like in a Sardine Can Edition

Gamescom2013So last week I promised that I’d put up my impressions of the Sonic Lost World demo at Gamescom. Two problems presented itself, the first one being that there were a lot more people at Gamescom than anticipated. (Pictured right) So many more that it was hard to even walk past some the booths. So I left after two hours of literally squirming through the crowds. The other problem was that the demo available to the public there was the same demo previously playable at Summer of Sonic and Sonic Boom, of which we already have impressions up right here. The demo shown off last week was only playable on the press day.

So basically, the highly anticipated Gamescom demo impressions write-up has been cancelled. To make up for it, here are Monday Links done on an actual Monday again:

Sonic 2 HD Team Behind iOS Game Major Magnet

major_mag

We all remember Sonic 2 HD and how it regrettably met its end not long after releasing a playable demo of Emerald Hill Zone due to internal controversy. Just because the door on that project closed though doesn’t mean that this was the end for them. Some of the team, now working under PagodaWest Games, put their talents toward a brand new IP for iOS systems called Major Magnet.

Retro Engine creator and the man behind the 2011 digital port of Sonic CD Christian “Taxman” Whitehead confirmed as much in a tweet to his followers earlier today congratulating the group on the successes the dev’s title has met, including an Editor’s Choice award from Apple itself.

While Sonic 2 HD may be resting eternally, definitely give these guys some love and pick up the game on your iOS device and hope that they can bring the game over to other platforms. Good job, PagodaWest!

Monday Links: Suddenly Fingers Edition

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, and by that I mean not go to Sonic-related websites in the past few days, you know that Eddie Lebron released his Sonic fan film last week. And if you’ve seen you’ll probably think that it’s impressive for a low-budget fan project or that it’s crap. Or you actually have a different opinion than the majority of the internet, but that’d just be silly. Anyway monday links.

Starbucks US Pick of the Week: Sonic 4 Episode II

Back in August, UK Starbucks customers were *ahem* treated to a free download of Sonic 4 Episode I for iOS. This week, US customers have a chance to own the second episode on their iDevices at no charge. From now through November 26, Sonic 4 Episode II will be available for free at Starbucks chains across the country. Simply take one of the cards near the register, enter the promotional code on the back, and you’re good to go. Note that this is only valid for US and Canadian iTunes accounts.

Special shoutout to Twitter user @SonicNerd97 for giving me the heads-up about this.

PAX Meetup at the Waterfront Park from 12PM on Saturday

Want to meet up with the Retro community and socialize in person like there’s no other chance? Lucky you dear reader as some of the Retro staff are going to head their way to Penny Arcade Expo. You won’t find a better time to hang out with other Sonic and Sega fanatics for a Retro Community Meet-Up. Besides, you should take a break from all those video games else you’ll strain your eyes, stunt your growth and perhaps die of starvation or dehydration. That’s us at Retro looking out for all of you going to the convention this weekend.

Why not return that favor and look for the Meet-Up at the Waterfront Park on Saturday September 1st at 12:00 p.m. located at 1301 Alaskan Way in Seattle? That’s roughly 15 minutes away from the PAX show floor. More food choices, less PAX crowd makes for a nice peaceful getaway. Heck, even if you’re in the Washington area we’ll let you join in.

Starbucks UK App of the Week: Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1

If you’re a coffee addict in the UK (and/or you just want to sabotage Costa Coffee), Starbucks is offering a free download of Sonic 4: Episode 1 for iOS now through the 21st in their UK locations. Simply pick up one of the small cards (usually near the register) and the promotional code will be on the back. Please note that for all of you who think you’re going to be sneaky and have a friend pick up codes that they are only redeemable with a UK iTunes account.

For the record, I would have preferred a grown-up Sonic mug that I would not be embarrassed to drink out of, like my current Starbucks mug. Seriously Sega, give me a merchandise license so I can make things 30 year olds wouldn’t have secret shame about owning. 😐

SEGA also confirmed along with THQ that they’ll be showing their games at Gamescom, which is in Germany, Cologne from August 15th through August 19th, even though both previously said that they won’t be at attending the event. Their games will be shown at the Koch Media and Saturn stands.
