So, Uh…

I found this scene on my kitchen floor…

Seems he started early for his 21st, I just found him passed out surrounded by half my available alcohol. I guess he does everything fast, eh? Gonna have a whopping headache in the morning though =P

See Eggman and Other Sega Cameos in the Wreck-It Ralph Trailer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHDQHVkYq4g

The first trailer of Disney’s homage to classic videogames ‘Wreck-It Ralph‘ has been released. We’ve already known Eggman would make an appearance in this movie and he can now be seen in this trailer sitting in a support group for video game villains in the trailer, but it turns out other Sega baddies appear in the same scene as well.

Cyril from The House of the Dead can be seen responding to Zangief from the Street Fighter franchise. And as pointed out by KOG on NeoGAF, the purple rhino is the evil demon god, Neff, from Altered Beast. There’s also some speculation that the yellow robot could be from Cyborg Justice.

The film will be released on November 2nd, 2012.

Cutscene from Sonic ’06, along with Mega Man 8, MGS4, FFX, Rifftrax’d!

You may have heard of a little show called Mystery Science Theater 3000  that had a man and his robots cracking jokes while cheesy, almost unhealthy to watch movies played in front of them. Fast forward to the present, and Mike, Kevin, and Bill, who starred in Mystery Science Theater 3000, have their own production now, Rifftrax, although it’s a little more internet-centric. Joystiq thought it would be amazing to get these guys to “riff” some video game cutscenes, and well… they were so right. If you want to skip to the Sonic ’06 scene, go to 1:11.

Character Swaps Aren’t Going to Get Much Better Than This

Character swaps aren’t exactly a rarity when it comes to Sonic hacks and mods. Especially recently with the PC version of Sonic Generations allowing modders to swap Sonic’s model with pretty much every other character in the game. But on the Xbox 360 and PS3 these mods don’t appear quite as often, mostly because hacking a console game means doing things Microsoft and Sony don’t want you to do which means you’d probably get banned from Xbox Live or Playstation Network for doing so. So it’s a good thing one of the people that actually bothered to hack Sonic 2006 made good use of it:

This video actually has been up since March 22nd, but… yeah, I don’t have an excuse for not covering this earlier. That doesn’t mean there’s not news about our favorite new playable Sonic character though. The video’s creator, Melpontro, has now started a show page for the videos starring Pelé the Beloved Dog, with there already being three more episodes. Be sure to read the descriptions:

Pelé the Beloved Dog in Dusty Desert
Hatsun the Pigeon in Wave Ocean
Pelé the Beloved Dog vs. Silver the Hedgehog

All this guy just needs to do now is to hack Sonic Unleashed and swap Sonic with Professor Pickle.

The AVGN Has Never Played a Bad Sonic Game

All I can say about Sonic is…it’s awesome! – James Rolfe a.k.a. the Angry Video Game Nerd

Not something you expected to hear from what is possibly the world’s most irate game player. James Rolfe has put out a video of him outside of the role of the Nerd and unscripted describing his memories on playing Sonic the Hedgehog games. Surprise! He states in the video that he has never played a bad Sonic game. If the video is of any indication, he probably stopped playing them after a certain point. The video covers his fond memories of Sonic 1, 2, 3, Spinball (Briefly) and Sonic CD.

Like any enthusiast, one will probably dissect the video and see how his memory stacks up to their own experience with the games. While James recounts his fondest memories from what seems like years that he last played a Sonic game after being introduced to the series by his neighbors, there’s something a bit off from the footage used for the video.

If the red number didn’t throw you off, you’ll notice that the font is taken from…Sonic the Hedgehog 2. It’s not supered over the actual game. It’s running in real time. The Nerd is usually known for using actual hardware to play games. No save states. No modifications. Where did this footage come from? The Nerd is at Game Trailers  and is probably not compiling the video himself. However, running behind him is footage from what is definitely a modified version of Sonic 1 and most likely through an emulator. Not to over analyze the video, as the other games don’t really have anything that any enthusiast here at Retro would find amiss.

Outside of that, the Nerd has some fond memories on Sonic, from the debug mode, the lambasting Tails, up to Sonic CD, using footage from Taxman’s port. (As well as the instrumental version of You Can Do Anything laid for the opening and closing of the video.) Worth a look if you’re into the Angry Video Game Nerd.

Sliding Around At The Speed of SoundResbalando a la Velocidad de Sonido

Here at Sonic Retro, we could subject you to mind-numbing analysis about a game, or you could watch the forums explode in negativity at the slightest mention of Sonic 4. We could tell you how the PC version is an unfortunate shoddy port of the Xbox 360 version lacking anti-aliasing among other settings.

But we’ve all heard that jazz and several more complaints for nearly two years now. The poor horse has been beaten into a fine powder. So here’s a video of the PC version in action. Left and Right and Slip’n’Slide!

However, just so you don’t leave here empty-handed or upset at yet another pot shot at Sonic 4, here’s a nifty little package for you PC version owners. Forum member Twilightzoney took some of the textures from the iPad version of the game and placed them into the PC version. This is the result:

To apply these textures, download the folder here and insert its contents in to the PLY folder located in the G_COM folder, which should be located where Steam stores the game. Make sure to back up a copy of the original files in case something goes wrong.

“Left and Right and Slip’n’Slide!”

Sonic Needs Insurance

I’m not sure why Sonic would be shopping for insurance with Progressive, or at all… it’s not like he drives the Tornado!

12 Days of Sonic Retro Christmas 2011: Day 11

On the eleventh day of Christmas, Retro gave to me…

…a bunch of videos of kids on Christmas.

So it’s Christmas Eve. Things are winding down, with last minute shopping and Christmas dinner being concocted. If you’re a kid, you won’t sleep tonight, wondering just what Santa got you for Christmas this year. I try to keep myself hip with the kids, with all their electronic gadgets and whatnot, but I don’t know what the hottest toy of the season is. But as a kid of the 90’s, there was only one item you wanted under the tree. That one box, covered in a Sega logo, that would send you into a crazed frenzy. While it may have been a very long time since anyone has gotten this excited over anything Sega related, let us take a look back to Christmases long, long ago, when the Sega Seal of Quality was still around…

12 Days of Sonic Retro Christmas 2011: Day 10

On the tenth day of Christmas, Retro gave to me…

…some fanmade Sonic Christmas specials. Yep.

By now, we’re all familiar with the officially licensed Sonic the Hedgehog Christmas stories, even if you’ve only heard of them on the front page. Sonic Christmas Blast. The numerous Sonic the Comic tales. Sonic’s interpretation of A Christmas Carol. That hasn’t stopped some fans from trying to create their own Sonic holiday specials, which all have their own spin to them. They’re definitely not everyone’s cup of tea, and I’m sure more than a few people are going to go “why is this on Retro.” But you know what? It’s the holiday season, and what’s Christmas without some extremely cheesy Christmas specials?
