Unofficial Poll: Sonic Generations Console/Portable Stages

With Sonic Boom less than a week away and Sega releasing trickles of details about Sonic Generations‘ 3DS iteration, including that StreetPass will be foolishly used for additional unlockable content, you can imagine that news has been rather slow to generate.

Although now there’s rumors that Sonic Generations is also headed to Sony’s upcoming PlayStation Vita (the PSP2) device, those are largely hearsay and it’s before E3, so take that with a truckload of salt.

So, while sitting with the lovely and rabid people of our IRC channel in #retro (drop on by, we won’t bite… hard,) a discussion came up about Generations 3DS stages. It’s likely the modern stages will cause a rift in both versions of the games, so the console version may include levels from Sonic 2006 (prepare the painkillers), Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colo(u)rs, while the 3DS version will tote levels from Sonic Rush, Rush Adventure, and… Sonic Colo(u)rs.

This isn’t limited to that era too. It’s a possibility that Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, and Sonic Heroes entries will be replaced with counterparts from Sonic Advance, Sonic Advance 2 and Sonic Advance 3 on the 3DS.

So here’s where you guys come in. What stages would you like to see from those games? Unfortunately, both games cannot get Starlight Carnival or Sweet Mountain, so it’s decision time. Sound off in the comments below!

Nintendo Power Confirms Sonic Generations, Shinobi for 3DS

Finally, we can put this rumor to rest.

After much teasing from Nintendo Power of an announcement in their July issue and the usual slip of the hand by Sega through a financial report, the tale of two Sonics is headed toward Nintendo’s depth-delivering handheld.

No screens have been shown on the game, so it’s unknown if this will mirror its console counterpart or follow its own beat akin to Sonic Colors on the DS.

While this confirms a 3DS release for the game, there’s no mention of the PC version also listed on that financial report, but at the moment, it’s safe to say that it’s looking good.

The issue also confirms that another classic Sega franchise is getting a new lease on life in the form of Shinobi. The franchise had a revival attempt back in 2002 on the Xbox and PlayStation 2 and was met with fair reception.

Check out an intenral production trailer for Shinobi with no audio after the jump.

Sega Report Hints Sonic Generations for 3DS, PC

[Update: It’s been brought to my attention that PC may not mean Personal Computer, but may stand for Nintendo’s new system codename “Project Cafe.” Stay tuned…]

Sonic’s 20th anniversary flagship title may soon be coming to a 3DS and PC near you.

An earnings report from Sega of Japan certainly claims as much and supports the rumors of a Generations 3DS release as seen on a GameStop pre-order list leaked to the Internet.

Of course, there’s a small chance this could be a simple typo (they happen), but very unlikely.

Much like Sonic Colo(u)rs, the console version was paired with a portable release, though it handled differently from its console counterpart in that instead of focusing on Unleashed-style 2D/3D gameplay, it stuck to the more tried and true Sonic Rush formula on the Nintendo DS. It remains to be seen if a 3DS release would also follow this path.

A PC version would no doubt be extremely appreciated by the modding community, which is making strides in other Sonic games like the old Sonic and Knuckles Collection or the more recent Sonic Adventure DX. But as in the past, the PC version could also fall quietly into the night, as much was the case for the PC port of Sonic The Hedgehog 2006.

A shame, that one. It would have been nice to see fans attempt to clean up that mess.

Sega of Japan Dropping Big Announcement on June 23

What’s this? Something about Sonic Generations that’s not a rumor? It’s an announcement of an announcement, but we’ll take it anyway.

By way of Spanish-site Sonic Paradise, the official Japanese site Sonic Channel has posted that there will be a massive information dump on the site about Sonic Generations. But that’s not all.

If the prospect of even more Sonic Generations videos and photos isn’t enough, Sega is teasing an extra special secret surprise to be released with all that information. It’s unknown if it’s another Sonic game announcement, a release date for the demo, or even confirmation of Generations popping up on some sort of Nintendo console.

Watch and wait as always, but when Sega drops the bomb, we’ll definitely bring the fallout to you.

Sonic Generations Demo Rated in Australia

Fans may be taking a crack at Sonic Generations far sooner than expected, or at least a morsel of the game.

The Australian Classification Board has rated a demo for the 20th Anniversary flagship title G for General Audiences. Shucks, I was expecting the dark and grungy Adventure-Shadow era Sonic would spin dash robots in two with gratuitous bloo–motor oil.

There is an unusual twist to this in that it’s very rare to see a demo rated for release, exceptions being “demo games” like Square Enix’s Dissidia 012: Final Fantasy Prologus and Capcom’s upcoming Mega Man Legends 3: Prototype Version. There’s a chance the demo may wind up being packed in with a game or, like the aforementioned demo games, have its own little story in Green Hill Zone to tease the game.

No sign of this popping up through the ESRB or PEGI websites, but we’ll keep you posted for if and when it does.

Sonic Teaser Video Shows… Classic Sonic?

Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic team up in the next Sonic game.

At 9 a.m. EST, Sega showed off the 50-second teaser video on their Sonic The Hedgehog fanpage on Facebook, offering that it’s a teaser of the next major Sonic title. [UPDATE: Video after the jump. Thanks, Twimfy!]

The footage begins with the green-eyed modern Sonic running along through a very white, lightly textured version of Green Hill Zone in 3D, going through pipes and shuttle loops until flying through the air and being joined by his classic chubby companion.

The two then run along side by side and we’re treated to a loose release date of “Coming 2011” and confirmation that the game will be available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, including online support in some capacity.

Although it does not confirm a title, it’s very likely to hold the name Sonic Generations, especially with how recently the domains were registered. Did your guess on our poll from last night come true?

Sonic Retro Podcast #4 Released

Clocking in at a little under a…um, year since we’ve last done a proper podcast comes the fourth Sonic Retro podcast! Coming in on the heels of lost podcasts, podcasts where we only talked about Shaq-Fu: The Return, podcasts which were too embarrassing to see the light of day, we give you…a slightly less embarrassing recording of Sonic Retro staff and friends pallin’ around.

This episode we take on the release of the Sonic the Hedgehog fan film Return to the Little Planet 2 (and our ensuing confusion over how it even relates to the Sonic series) and speculate on Sonic the Hedgehog’s 20th anniversary, only to realize there’s not that much to speculate on at this point; therefore, we look back at other anniversary milestones and assess what they mean on the eve of this major event.

Our friend Bartman performs hosting duty this time around, and the show is, as always, mixed and produced by InstantSonic. Who knows–maybe we can get around to doing these more than once a year eventually.

Sega Rings in Sonic’s 20th Anniversary Early

Even though 2011 has only just begun, Sega has wasted no time in kicking off their celebrations for Sonic and Puyo Puyo’s 20th anniversaries with teaser websites.

While there’s very little in terms of information, Sega also released two images: one of Sonic with an item monitor and one of the official 20th Anniversary logo. A pop up on the site when clicking the logo gives information about the debut of Sonic and the fact that the brand has sold over 70,000,000 units globally since June 23, 1991.

It goes on to tease future games for the franchise in 2011, of which we know there are three more projects to be announced this year according to Allan Pritchard, executive vice president of sales and marketing at Sega of America, in a recent interview with Game Informer.
