The hits keep on coming. If you’re to find yourself in the most frightful of situations, you may find yourself hearing YouTube’s MaxieDaMan‘s mix of Carnival Night with the unexplored haunted mansion occupied with creeps, ghoulies and the ever unsettling, yet complimentary harpsichord under the title of The Haunted Carnival.

Sonic and the Retro Crew would like to remind all young ones to stay safe this Halloween. Be sure to read the list after the jump!

This Adorable Bunny Invites You to Guess the Next Digital Sega Release

With these Sonic the Hedgehog soundtracks coming out, this little critter would like to invite you to guess the next digital release from Sega by listening to a choice song from a soundtrack of another prolific Sega franchise. You’ll get no hints from reading this, but if you watch the video, it will be more than enough for you to wonder/guess/predict/excite/all-of-the-above about Sega’s next release. Even though it’s well past Spring, this contest ends October 10th at 7PM PST, and you can read up on the rules from Sega’s US blog here.

How Archie Played The Games, Part Five: Of Rodents and Giants

Everyone loves Knuckles the Echidna. Even if this statement isn’t true today, it was definitely the case back in the 90’s. From the moment Knuckles appeared onscreen punching out Sonic and taking the Chaos Emeralds, everyone wanted a piece of him. They wanted to know more about who he was, what secrets the floating island he lived on held, and most of all wanted to see him and Sonic tangle it up. Sonic 3 & Knuckles delivered on all counts, but that wasn’t enough to satisfy a child of the 90’s. They wanted more, and Sega, knowing the character’s growing popularity, was prepared to give them exactly what they asked for.

This isn’t the best time to get into the short, sad life of the Sega 32X, but needless to say it didn’t do well in any regard. Even though it was on the market for a short time, the powers-that-be knew that some sort of Sonic-related title needed to be released. And what started out as a proof-of-concept having Sonic and “Tails” tethered together turned into the much-forgotten Chaotix, starring Knuckles the Echidna. In the west, the title added Knuckles’ name to the cover, just to remind people that, yes, this was a game with Sonic characters, even though just about every kid in America had no idea what the origins of Charmy, Vector, and Mighty were historically.

I’m sure you can guess by now that Archie had to adapt it.

A Brief Defense For Big The Cat

Much has been said about Sonic Adventure, Sonic’s first true foray into 3D gaming. The sprawling levels, the blistering speed, the last moments of precision platforming, and the entire redesign of Sonic the Hedgehog and his world. Even if later rereleases haven’t received the kindest reviews, when it came out it was an amazing game. Even Famitsu, that near-Bible of Japanese news and reviews, gave it one of their highest scores possible, with one reviewer citing that if Ocarina of Time had come out after Sonic Adventure, there’s no way the Zelda title would have received its perfect score.

But no matter who is talking about it, when the low points come about, everyone will assuredly talk about one of the shorter portions of the game, and the one character associated with it. The part that many people point to as the worst part of the game. A section that people now feel vindicated with their hatred because of the events of Summer of Sonic where Iizuka apologized for it. Yes, I am talking about the fishing stylings of Big the Cat.

All I have to say is…why?

The Strangest Things Show Up At Conventions

And I don’t mean the con goers.

Yesterday, I joined a few friends on a trip to Florida Supercon, which meant two things: getting more StreetPass hits on the 3DS (32! If you went, look for a Mii named Gene. I got a person from Sega Bits, so…) and humiliating people in the gaming room. But no self respecting con is complete without a dealer room with overpriced or weird items, like a remote control miniature tank that fires B.B. gun pellet for $70. Awesome.

But this isn’t about a toy that can be used for amazing purposes. Instead, enjoy oddities such as Sonic themed snuggies (robes you wear backwards) and bath robes. Other than that, it’s the typical showing of those little Sonic beanie hats in Sonic, Shadow, and Super Sonic varieties at $18 (!) a pop.

Apologies for the shaky quality. I was using my cellphone and the lighting wasn’t great.

Guess Who’s Back To New York Skies This Fall

After some years of hiatus and not at all due to a terrific crash into a street light and children due to high winds, the original video game mascot balloon is back to celebrate Sonic’s 20th Anniversary.

This year during The 85th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, amidst all the floats, balloons, marching bands and ear-bleedingly bad showtunes, will feature the return everyone’s favorite manic blue hedgehog once again inflated with an air compressor and strung along for the enjoyment of everyone.

While it’s unknown if it will be the same balloon used in the ’90s parades or a newer one of everyone’s favorite green-eyed menace, we can only hope that we don’t have another Hindenburg on our hands, as seen below.

Thanks to the tipsters who reminded us of this as we’ve been busy with our own festivities.

Setting Fire to Generations’ Green Hill Zone: Post Your Best Times

With Sonic Generations’ demo now out for the massive scrutiny and pleasure of Sonic fans on most of the globe (sorry, Japanese PSN users), we thought we’d steal a page from Sonic Boom and start our own Time Attack challenge for the demo stage.

Now, at Sonic Boom, the best time on record was about 54 seconds. Scorching! However, site moderator Chimpo just could not let that stand and, after many attempts and botched maneuvers, scored the commendable time above of 0:51.86.

Now it’s time for you to smoke through Green Hill Zone in the demo. Can you beat Chimpo’s time? If you do, please post a photo and, please, no hack-assisted times. Let’s try and keep this fun for everyone. Don’t think we’ve not seen those Sonic 4 leaderboards!
