See Eggman and Other Sega Cameos in the Wreck-It Ralph Trailer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHDQHVkYq4g

The first trailer of Disney’s homage to classic videogames ‘Wreck-It Ralph‘ has been released. We’ve already known Eggman would make an appearance in this movie and he can now be seen in this trailer sitting in a support group for video game villains in the trailer, but it turns out other Sega baddies appear in the same scene as well.

Cyril from The House of the Dead can be seen responding to Zangief from the Street Fighter franchise. And as pointed out by KOG on NeoGAF, the purple rhino is the evil demon god, Neff, from Altered Beast. There’s also some speculation that the yellow robot could be from Cyborg Justice.

The film will be released on November 2nd, 2012.

Sonic And Nike Finally Team Up

It’s one of those promotions that seem incredibly simple: Sonic the Hedgehog, a character with distinctive shoes, and Nike, one of the biggest shoe companies in the entire world, teaming up for cross-brand promotion. For one reason or another, it’s never happened…that is, until today. Well, technically yesterday but y’know how these things go.

The focus of Nike’s latest campaign is their line of Vapor footwear, its newest styles being showcased by some of Soccer’s biggest stars on Youtube. That’s all fine and dandy, but what does that have to do with Sonic, you ask? Well, the version of the video right on their profile has been filled with secret links to send you off on side quests to put you in a Vapor-buying mood. If you go straight to their YouTube page and go scroll about two-thirds of the way in their embedded video (about 1:55 if you want to compare with this video here), you’ll see in the stadium some ads for Nike. Click on one, and you will be sent to a flash-gaming diversion, staring none other than Sonic himself, edited to now be wearing Vaporwear.

For those who might not know, Sega and Nike were supposed to do a promotional deal back in 1994 – Knuckles’ distinctive white swoosh was meant to resemble the Nike logo in a slew of cross-promotion that fell through. As for the game, it plays almost exactly the same as Sonic the Sketchhog, with one new addition: you can now kick soccer balls through Crabmeats. Whoa Nelly!

And yes, even though all the sprites are derived from the original Sonic the Hedgehog, the music all comes from Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1. You can’t escape it just yet, folks.

Yasuhara Now Employed At Nintendo, The 90’s Are Forever Confused

When people tell the short version of the development of the original Sonic the Hedgehog, there are usually two names dropped: Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima. The former, though starting out as a programmer, soon became the figurehead of Sonic Team, his smiling mug plastered all over any material regarding the behind-the-scene events. The latter, of course, being the man who designed the characters including the star. However, there was a third man who, one could argue, shaped the title into the addictive game that people still play to this day. That man’s name is Hirokazu Yasuhara, who was the lead Game Planner of the original Mega Drive quartet, as well as the Director to Sonic 3 & Knuckles. While the designs to the characters were amazing, and there was a solid engine being built around it, the actual layout of the game would have been very, very different had Yasuhara not been there to design those level maps that have been burned into our minds over the last two decades. Who knows how things would have gone if he had flown to the United States when he originally planned instead of being delayed to shape one of the biggest video game franchises of all time?

That is why this news, for anyone who was there during the height of the Mega Drive’s success, is a bit crazy to take in. As of today, reported on Gamasutra and confirmed by his own LinkedIn page, Hirokazu Yasuhara is now employed at Nintendo Software Technology, a subsidiary of Nintendo of America. Best known for their work on the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series, nothing has been said of what plans Nintendo has in store for the former Sega employee. Since he’s still in the United States, its very unlikely that he’ll have any role in one of the main Super Mario titles, but still. If you were to tell any 90’s kid that the man responsible for the layout of everything from the Green Hill Zone to Death Egg would one day be working at the house Mario built, would they have believed it?

More Sonic Themed Avatar Items Now on Xbox Live

To promote the upcoming release of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II, SEGA has released a bunch of new avatar items. These include apparel your avatar can wear, like a full body Tails suit that’ll either make you look cool or creepy (320 MSP), a couple of hoodies in Sonic and Tails variants (240 MSP), a T-shirt with just the Sonic 4 Episode II logo on it (80 MSP) and last but not least, a Metal Sonic helmet.

But as the image above suggests, that’s not all of the new things available. There are a bunch of new props that would actually be pretty neat in real life your avatar can play with as well. These include a remote controlled Metal Sonic toy (240 MSP), a Drawstring Tails Plushie (240 MSP), a couple of toys based on two new badniks from Episode II (240 MSP), a Capsule toy complete with small animals (240 MSP), a game cartridge of Sonic 4 Episode II complete with a SEGA Genesis hooked up to an item monitor (240 MSP) and a half-pipe from the special stage (240 MSP). While to me this is all useless crap that costs way too much, there is actually some cool stuff in there if you’re into dressing up your Avatar. All of these items are now available on the Xbox Live Marketplace. Below are more pictures of most of the new Avatar items mentioned here.

The AVGN Has Never Played a Bad Sonic Game

All I can say about Sonic is…it’s awesome! – James Rolfe a.k.a. the Angry Video Game Nerd

Not something you expected to hear from what is possibly the world’s most irate game player. James Rolfe has put out a video of him outside of the role of the Nerd and unscripted describing his memories on playing Sonic the Hedgehog games. Surprise! He states in the video that he has never played a bad Sonic game. If the video is of any indication, he probably stopped playing them after a certain point. The video covers his fond memories of Sonic 1, 2, 3, Spinball (Briefly) and Sonic CD.

Like any enthusiast, one will probably dissect the video and see how his memory stacks up to their own experience with the games. While James recounts his fondest memories from what seems like years that he last played a Sonic game after being introduced to the series by his neighbors, there’s something a bit off from the footage used for the video.

If the red number didn’t throw you off, you’ll notice that the font is taken from…Sonic the Hedgehog 2. It’s not supered over the actual game. It’s running in real time. The Nerd is usually known for using actual hardware to play games. No save states. No modifications. Where did this footage come from? The Nerd is at Game Trailers  and is probably not compiling the video himself. However, running behind him is footage from what is definitely a modified version of Sonic 1 and most likely through an emulator. Not to over analyze the video, as the other games don’t really have anything that any enthusiast here at Retro would find amiss.

Outside of that, the Nerd has some fond memories on Sonic, from the debug mode, the lambasting Tails, up to Sonic CD, using footage from Taxman’s port. (As well as the instrumental version of You Can Do Anything laid for the opening and closing of the video.) Worth a look if you’re into the Angry Video Game Nerd.

Crush 40 Puts Up Previews of Their Upcoming Songs

Crush 40, the band that performed the theme songs for past Sonic games such as both Sonic Adventure titles and Sonic Heroes,  has put samples of three of their songs that will be on their upcoming EP. While none of the songs are tied to a new Sonic game, one of them is related to the franchise.

The first of these songs, Sonic Youth, heavily references past songs they made or remixed for the Sonic franchise such as Open Your Heart, Live and Learn, His World and Sonic Boom. The as of yet untitled EP will be available on iTunes sometime in the future. The full versions will be performed in Tokyo later this week.

Eggman Appears Along With Other Video Game Villains in Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph

Any animation fan should fondly remember Robert Zemeckis’ tribute to the golden age of cartoons, Who Framed Roger Rabbit. To those who have never seen the movie (and you should be ashamed of yourself if you haven’t), the movie contained many cameos from various cartoons with characters like Donald Duck and Daffy Duck sharing screentime together. Disney’s upcoming movie Wreck-It Ralph does something similar (though it presumably does not contain live-action actors), but instead of being about cartoons it’s about videogames.

The movie is about that angry looking fellow shown in the movie’s logo, Wreck-It Ralph, who appears in a fictional arcade game called Fix-It Felix. His job is to destroy the buildings that the game’s titular hero has to fix. Because Ralph doesn’t like being the bad guy anymore and wants to be good he gets out of the game and jumps into other genres like first person shooters and kart racers. Though the games he gets into are made up for the movie, not all of the characters are. Like Roger Rabbit, famous characters from videogame history appear throughout the film.

One scene in particular has Ralph in a support group for villains, pictured in the above image (taken from Disney’s D23 Magazine). As you can see Eggman appears in this scene along with Bowser, Dr. Wily and Zangief. If he’s just going to sit there doing nothing or if he actually has a speaking role we don’t know, but it’s still neat to see him appear in a big Disney flick. Considering the nature of the film, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Sonic make a small cameo as well. Of course if he doesn’t matter because the movie sounds awesome as it is. You can find Wreck-It Ralph in theaters from November 2nd this year.

Sonic Boom & Summer of Sonic 2012 Announced, Bonus Sonic 4 Concept Art

Eighteen years ago, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was released to the masses. No one bothered to ask Sonic if he saw his shadow (and if he did, if it was just a generic circle or in his actual silhouette), but because of how important that release was all those many years ago, Sega has been using the date to psyche up whatever hedgehog-related items they’ve been working on. Last year, they teased the 20th Anniversary. The year before was right around the time Sonic 4: Episode 1 was announced. This year, we have not one but three Sonic-related prizes on the ol’ Sega blog. Yes, it wasn’t too hard to guess something Sonic 4 related was going to be there, but the other two may come as a bit of a surprise, as some people questioned if they were ever going to happen again. Yes, Sega has confirmed that the fan-favorite-fan-gatherings Sonic Boom and Summer of Sonic are indeed returning for 2012.

Twelve Days of Sonic Retro Christmas 2011 Edition: Day 12

On the twelfth day of Christmas, Retro gave to me…

Once again, Christmas is upon us. By the time you read this, more than likely you’ve already opened up whatever was hiding under the tree, and are now wasting time until you’re forced to go see even more family to reminisce about Christmases of the past. For while Christmas is about giving gifts in an act of kindness to others, it is also about reflection. To look back on the year to think of the highs and the lows, to smile at the memories you created that you will cherish for a lifetime, to remember the ones we’ve lost when we shouldn’t have. The elements that make us who we are, and will hopefully make us wiser come the new year.
