Impromptu Community Day Stream

Watch live video from vidyaretro on TwitchTV

Its free weekend for Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed on Steam. Which sounds like a prime opportunity to host a community stream for this very occasion. Granted, its quite last minute, but then again, we had no clue this was going to happen until yesterday. Come join in the fun with us, and if you want to play with us, we’ll give you the information on the air, or check with the stream’s chat by going to the Vidya Retro channel on Twitch.

Its over, but we’ve recorded all four hours of the free racing action with our Retro crew talking about…something? Also in the meantime, we’ve streamed something earlier that may catch your attention: Fan Game Frenzy II, hot off of Sonic Doom II, we look at more Sonic fan games from the yesteryear.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed Steam Update Adds Company of Heroes 2 Character

The PC version of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed had a surprising amount of additional characters exclusive to the platform with Team Fortress 2 characters, some guy from Total War: Shogun 2 and some guy from Football Manager. Now to celebrate the American holiday known as Independence Day, SEGA has decided to add in another character for free: some Russian General guy from Company of Heroes 2. To download this new character, just let Steam update the game.

If you don’t own ASRT on PC, you’re in luck. The full game can be played for free until Sunday 1pm PDT and is on sale for 75% off on Steam. All other Sonic games are priced off as well including Sonic Generations, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic 4 etc.

Shadow the Hedgehog Now Available on PSN in Japan

Once thought to be an April Fools joke when it was announced, Shadow the Hedgehog is now available on PSN in Japan. It’s being released as a “PS2 Classic”, meaning it’s just the PS2 version running in an emulator. Do note that this was easily the worst version, so it might be best to get the game for Gamecube or Xbox instead. Or you can just ignore it and forget that it ever existed like I did until just now.

The classic hasn’t been announced for release yet in the US and Europe, but it can be bought using a Japanese PSN account for 1,200 yen.

E3 2013: Mario and Sonic 2014 Assets and Info

WiiU_MarioSonic_logo01_E3

You know what? The fact that this is the fourth Mario and Sonic games so far warms my heart a bit. There’ll be people who read this who could care less about this game’s existence. I’d get this if I had people to play the game with honestly. From a design perspective, this is a pretty ingenious way to combine the two franchises together directly and have it make sense. Plus if it means more things like this, then by all means. Its the second of three Sonic games published by Nintendo.

Mario and Sonic go for the gold!
Join Mario and Sonic and the rest of your favorite characters as they team up and compete in events at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.
Features:

Experience realistic events from the Winter Games, including curling, skiing, figure skating pairs and snowboard slopestyle, which will make its Olympic Games debut in Sochi, Russia.
In addition to these realistic events, the game also includes Dream Events set in the worlds of Sonic and Mario that let players perform dynamic moves not possible in real life. For example, experience the adrenaline rush of Winter Sports Champion Race, a mixed event that combines skiing, snowboarding, skating and bobsleigh in a single race.
The Wii U GamePad controller and the first use of Wii Remote Plus functionality in the series offers greater depth of control and intuitive game play that immerses players in each event.

Here’s a load of E3 assets after the jump.

Loops to be Defied Laws of Physics

As revealed by Games Industry International, Sega has announced three Sonic the Hedgehog titles will be made available for the OUYA Console. The three being Sonic the Hedgehog 4Episode I, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 – Episode II, and Sonic CD. No release dates have been revealed, however all three games will be priced at $6.99 with demo versions available for each. Why they cost more compared to the other platforms they’ve been released on has not been made clear, all three games are reported to be optimized for the NVidia Tegra 3™ chipset, the best in mobile chipsets, nothing can beat NVidia Tegra 3™. NVidia Tegra 3™. This may also mean other functions such as two player simultaneous will be possible with Episode II and other minute enhancements.

Release dates have not been announced, however the OUYA will be released on June 25th and is likely to launch with the games available from their store.

Third Nintendo-Exclusive Sonic Game Releasing This Year (Update: Or Not)

mario-sonic-winter-olympic-games

UPDATE: Turns out that someone at Nintendo Germany screwed up. The executive editor of IGN just tweeted that he re-confirmed with SEGA that the third mystery title won’t release in 2013. Guess we’ll have to make due with only two new Sonic games on Nintendo platforms this year, unless you count the 3DS version of Lost World as a seperate game. Sorry for the confusion folks.

It was only a couple of weeks ago when Nintendo announced that they made an exclusive partnership deal with SEGA for three brand new Sonic games exclusive to Nintendo platforms. The first two of these games being Mario and Sonic at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games and the recently revealed Sonic Lost World, both bound to be released later this year. Of course this leaves one mystery game yet to be announced.

Turns out we may not have to wait that long to know what it is. According to Sonic Stadium, Nintendo Germany spilled today in a press release that all three exclusives will be released this year. That sure is a lot of Sonic games for Nintendo haters to be pissed about in a single year. Of course this also means we probably won’t have to wait that long to know what this incredibly mysterious and secret game is. E3 is just around the corner, so it wouldn’t be surprising at all if it’d be announced there.

Sonic X-treme Meets Mario Galaxy in This Sonic Lost World Debut Trailer (Update)

Update: Screenshots of the Wii U and 3DS version and a preview with loads of details have been uploaded to IGN. The preview can be read here, the screenshots can be found below.

IGN just uploaded the debut trailer for Sonic Lost World, showing what the six guardians look like (surprise: they’re evil aliens!), but more importantly the new gameplay style. This isn’t just more of the same of what was seen in Sonic Unleashed, Colours and Generations. This also adds elements from Super Mario Galaxy and the cancelled Sonic X-treme into the mix.

Also note-able is that the game has a new beautiful plasticine-like style. Those who have wanted an incredibly stylized Sonic game (like me) will probably be very pleased by how this turned out. In addition, Flickies are back. Sonic Lost World will be out this fall exclusively on Wii U and 3DS.

Sonic Lost World to be Revealed on May 29th, Six New Characters Teased

Last week there were a couple of comments on a Sonic Stadium article that claimed the Sonic Facebook page accidentally revealed that Sonic Lost World will be unveiled on May 29th and that the game would feature six guardians of the Lost World who may or may not be evil. There was no proof that this Facebook post was actually made so we automatically assumed it was fake…

soniclw alien teaser

Turns out that rumors that can’t be backed up can actually be true sometimes. SEGA made a Facebook post confirming that the rumor along with this teaser image showing the silhouettes of the six cartoony alien guardians who may be evil. Of course, because Takashi Iizuka is working on this game and he worked on Sonic games that featured evil aliens, these aliens can definitely be nothing else but very evil.
