Sunday Jams: Sonic, You Can Do Anything (Within Reason)

We here at Sonic Retro can’t get enough of the jams. I don’t think there is anyone here not excited about the soundtrack to Sonic Generations, for instance. And on Sunday, what else is there to do but to just sit back and listen to some more of that fancy music? That is, if you’re not already waist-deep in the Sonic Retro Game Marathon Extravaganza that is going on right now.

Sonic – You Can Do Anything is one of those songs that can stir quite a few emotions, not just because it was the title theme to the Japanese version of Sonic CD, but because it was a returning theme in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic & Tails for the Master System/Game Gear. At the tail end of last year, YouTube user HyperShan3 had inspiration strike, and created a little ditty combining all three into one ultimate five minute epic.

It is true: Egg is never alone.

Who Doesn’t Love Rap About Sonic the Hedgehog?

For some reason, Sonic the Hedgehog has inspired quite a large amount of rap. Sure, we’ve all heard Duane and BrandO’s seven minute epic more than you’d want to admit. And Sonic Rap has crept on the front page more than once. But this, my friends, might be the one to top them all. Once you listen to “Sonic the Hedgehog rap,” you will never be the same. This I can promise you.

Keep on spinnin’ me. Spammin’ me.

How Dr. Eggman Listens to Green Hill

Look, I’m not going to lie. There are about 12 million different versions of the Green Hill Zone theme on the Internet. Some are nice, some are terrible, some should never have seen the light of day. YouTube user EnergyLabsBR decided to throw their hat into the ring a couple weeks ago, but instead of using instruments or making up words to sing, they decided to go the extra mile. All they need? A tesla coil.

  • Mercury wrote an extensive piece on reoccuring themes in Masato Nakamura’s compositions for Sonic 1 and 2 and wound up finding some interesting similarities between the Sonic 1 Special Stage theme and Sonic 2‘s unused track 10 music.   • I’m under the impression that some of our readers believe that friendship is magic or something.   • Sonic Generations Collector’s Edition was announced last week for European and Australian audiences, but this has left other audiences without a way to purchase the box set. Right now, the best option for North and South American audiences is to go through Amazon UK, who is currently charging 85GBP for a preorder on the game and approximately 10GBP for airmail shipping and customs charges (if applicable for your country.) Keep in mind that this may not be the best deal, but it is the best of what has been announced so far and given the limited run of Collector’s Edition sets, you may want to preorder now.   • Australian chain GAME is holding a charity auction of games from the Sonic franchise before Sonic Generations‘ release. The kicker? “Escape From The City” – The A Capella Version

So it’s almost dusk in the United States, meaning fireworks are about to go off to celebrate a moment you British readers would rather forget about. Either way, more than likely some of you have enjoyed some sort of grilled entrée, and if so I hope if any hot dogs were involved you added chili. But that’s beside the point. Yes, everyone here is still waiting for Sonic Generations. Yes, everyone is waiting to play through City Escape so you can hear that classic remix that’s gotten everyone in a tizzy. However, since it’s a Monday most people are treating as a Sunday, why not listen to someone else’s rendition of Escape From The City? Specifically, the rendition by the 22-person strong Video Game Music Choir.

Yes, the video itself is blurry. But unless you really, really want to see that girl dressed as Zelda, the sound should suffice.

Got Places to Go? Put Classic City Escape on Your MP3 Player

We gave plugs to some of Sonic Boom’s debut music earlier, and one of the more requested songs so far has easily been the Classic Remix of “Escape from the City” that will be used in Sonic Generations without any of the audience voices.

We hear you loud and clear. While the recent dissection of the demo yielded its own musical results, Escape from the City was missing from the included files.

But Sonic Retro has its ways…

Listen to Crush 40 and Alex Maklouhf’s Covers of Super Sonic Racing, Sonic Boom

Over at Sonic Boom, a small concert was thrown for the club’s goers by none other than Crush 40’s Jun Senoue and Johnny Gioeli, singing songs like Open Your Heart, His World, In The Wind, and Live and Learn to name a few. However, Alex Maklouhf from Cash Cash joined them on stage to also perform Sonic Colors’ Credits Theme, Speak With Your Heart.

So imagine some people’s reactions when they all got together and did new versions of Sonic R’s Super Sonic Racing and Sonic CD’s Sonic Boom, which were apparently one time performances for Sonic Boom attendees. Well, we got you covered.
