PAX Prime 2014: Amy Gets Kidnapped In This New Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal Trailer

While we got a new trailer for Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric during Gamescom, we’ve gotten one for series’ handheld entry Shattered Crystal from PAX Prime. This trailer primarily shows off the game’s CG cutscenes, which shows Amy being kidnapped by Lyric, along with small snippets of gameplay showcasing a variety of levels.
And like how Metal Sonic popped up at the end of the Rise of Lyric trailer, Shadow makes an appearance in this one. Unlike Metal Sonic, his design has been affected somewhat by Sonic Boom’s style. It also seems like he has a new voice, because who cares about consistency anyway?

New Sonic Megamix Build Released, Sort Of, Not Really

If you’ve been looking up what the hell is up with Sonic Megamix, you might have noticed that there’s a leaked “5.0” build out there. Because of it getting more popular, Stealth and the team have decided to just put it out there themselves. They don’t recommend anyone to actually play it though, because this build is unfinished, buggy and very outdated. You can find Stealth’s complete post about this after the jump along with a download link to build “5.0a”. Just be sure to read his post before you consider downloading it.
If you want a glimpse of the current build, Stealth also released a new video of it which can be seen above.

Three New Sonic Game Gear Prototypes Found

[The following was provided by forum moderator and researcher JenHedgehog.]
Sonic Retro member Orengefox recently acquired three new Sonic Game Gear prototypes, which have now been made available for download. These are review copies of Tails Adventures and Sonic Labyrinth, and an early demo of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (all obtainable here.)
Sonic 2 is a rolling auto-demo showcasing mainly the prototype version of Green Hills Zone, which was prominently shown in many early magazine articles prior to the game’s release. Sky High Zone and Underground Zone can also be seen. The auto-demo has a time stamp of Dec. 5, 1991, making this an extremely early version of the game that was compiled almost a year before the final version was released.
As well as the Game Gear games, Orengefox is releasing some other new Sonic demos including a previously unseen Japanese Sonic Adventure trial, and a trial version of Sonic & the Secret Rings[forum link] which was distributed in limited quantities to competition winners in Japan.
To see what our members are able to find hidden inside these games once the digging begins, head over to the forums, where all these prototypes can be downloaded right now.

Sonic Center Goes Fast to Kill Cancer

1401242723860With a successful Sonic-a-thon crossing the goal post with an impressive $20,622.10 raised for Child’s Play, Sonic speedrunning hub The Sonic Center is looking to blaze its own record on the leaderboards in their charity drive to support the American Cancer Society.
I don’t really need to go on about the horror stories of cancer since you all likely know your own share of stories already. However, it’s a good feeling to watch people ram through Sonic games for the benefit of helping to find cures for diseases or at least make the world a less horrible place.
Currently, flying fox is slashing through the entirety of Sonic and the Black Knight. The marathon runs through Aug. 23, so there is still plenty to see and to cheer these guys on.

Sonic Hacking Contest 2014 Live!

shc2014

Has it already been a year? We and SSRG are teaming up once again for the annual Sonic Hacking Contest, where talented fans work on creating their own game hacks. Now, this may make some people think that it will be nothing but the usual MegaDrive game hacks, but the contest also features Sonic Generations and Sonic Adventure DX edits among others.
New to this round is the introduction of Team entrants, which allows multiple users to be credited together for a work instead of last year’s single representative. Teams can consist of Retro members, SSRG members, or a mix of both.
As always, you’ll need a Sonic Retro or SSRG account to log in and actually vote for which title you feel best deserves an award from many categories. Downloading, however, is free to the public. Who knows, maybe these works can inspire some of you to take a stab at it next year, especially with the many tools Generations hacking has.

Gamescom 2014: Sonic Dies in This New Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric Trailer, Also Metal Sonic and Shadow Return

This new trailer for Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric skips right to the point: Sonic dies. So there we go, franchise finished, I’d say it had a good run but every series has to stop sometime I guess. I mean, when was the last time Sonic got revived after dying? Probably in some game that never existed.
Also there are some new screenshots for this and Shattered Crystal and some concept art that reveals that Metal Sonic and Shadow are in this game with their designs unchanged. So there’s your fanservice. SEGA also confirmed that both games will come out in Europe on November 21st.

Sonic-A-Thon Endures Sonic Game Gauntlet for Child’s Play

sonicathon2014

Summer is halfway through for us northern hemisphere folks, but it is never a bad time to kick back in the air conditioning and watch a bunch of fans do crazy things in a variety of Sonic games. The motley crew over at HellfireComms is well underway on their Sonic-a-thon charity drive, where all proceeds will go directly to Child’s Play.
The crew is currently going through Sonic Rush with Sonic Labyrinth up next. You know, that crappy one on Game Gear where Sonic has Slow-Shoes and has to roll everywhere? At the least, the personal torture these guys are inflicting upon themselves playing the (abundantly) bad games of the series should be entertaining.
The event started on Aug. 4, but has no definite end time. The party is already underway, so go help some sick kids enjoy video games too! Check out the schedule for more info on when things will be played.
