Sonic CD Comes Out Tomorrow For Five Bucks, Launch Trailer (UPDATE)

SEGA has finally announced when we can expect Sonic CD to hit digital platforms. As it turns out, it will be released for most platforms tomorrow for only five bucks. Considering this is an all new version made by Christian “The Taxman” Whitehead with features like playable Tails, the Sonic 2 spindash, widescreen, 60FPS at all times and the ability to switch between both soundtracks, that’s a pretty good deal. However, if you live in the US and only have a PS3 you’ll have to wait until December 20th to buy the game. The Android and Windows Phone 7 versions have also been delayed until the new year and there’s no word on when the Steam version will be released, though The Taxman has said on the forums that it isn’t cancelled. SEGA also released a launch trailer for the game, which can be viewed here:

It shows a couple of the new features, so it’s worth a watch. Also note that at the end the trailer cuts to the Sonic CD logo right before Sonic goes past a future sign, maybe a teaser for things to come? Either way, it looks like this version of the game will be worth buying. Multiple times.

UPDATE: Ken Balough has said on the official SEGA forums that the PC version will be coming soon and that the release date was adjusted “slightly due to some outside factors”. A date will be announced soon.

Sonic CD Developer Diary Uploaded, Let The Hype Commence

It’s the middle of December, and the rerelease of Sonic the Hedgehog CD is supposed to happen at any moment. No, we don’t have a release date still. But Sega of America seems to realize that, yes, we really want this game. And so instead of telling us when it’ll come out, they’ve given us something amazing. Something that, by all rights, should have been in the documentary Sonic: The Birth of an Icon. Though the interior has been redone by our very own Taxman, the visual style of the game is still definitely that of Kazuyuki Hoshino, who was also the lead character designer of the game. And since he’s still at Sega, someone decided to ask him to talk about the game. And talk he did.

Various Animators Make Sonic Run Like an IdiotVarios Animadores Hacen Sonic Correr Como Un Idiota

There are some great Tumblr blogs around, like Things Organized Neatly or Feeding Objects. Joining these is a new blog called Dumb Running Sonic:

This started with Magical Game Time’s Zac Gorman making a simple gif animation, which prompted Nedroid to make one as well. The latter challenged others to make dumb running Sonics as well and the result was this amazing new meme, with animations like the one above. (Which was made by Boxer Hockey’s Tyson Hesse.) You can see more over at the Tumblr blog.

Never one from backing away talking up the fanbase, Sega’s own Sonic Digital Brand Manager Ken Balough has been busy chatting with the folks over on Sega’s Sonic forums. Usually, this isn’t enough to draw enough attention–after all, if it was the case, we’d be writing up every time Sega’s own Aaron “Ruby Eclipse” Webber shows up on here in his quest to be the Fastest Sega Employee on Sonic Generations speed runs.

But when Sonic 4: Episode II teases begin to fly, you can bet people will be listening.

London Gaming Con: The Report

There’s something about human contact, isn’t there? I haven’t been seen around here so much lately, but if you mention that there’s a meet-up somewhere close to me, I’ll be there. People, with their strange, squishy bodies and minds. Man, I love ’em. You might not be surprised, then, when I tell you that the idea of covering London Gaming Con for Sonic Retro appealed to me. Put a bunch of gamers in the Rocket Complex, add internet celebrities and sprinkle a bit of technology about the place, then bake for a couple of days. That’s my kind of weekend.

Well actually, it was my kind of Sunday because the Saturday was taken up with a family wedding. As a result, I missed out on Dr. Ashen, CoLD SToRAGE and the busier of the two days. What I didn’t miss was the Super Sonic Sunday programme of events, which sought to celebrate our blue hero as his 20th anniversary year draws to a close. You can see some of these events in the video below:

Of course, that’s only part of the story. Do you want to see pics and things? Of course you do. Click the post break already.

Sonic: The Birth of an Icon: The Retro Review

When news originally broke about the forthcoming release of the Sonic Generations Collector’s Edition, I must admit I was a bit jealous. Seeing as I lived in America, it would require money I couldn’t justify, importing a game that I had no idea would even work on my region’s hardware. So I sat and waited, to see just what the contents were. Yes, we all knew what they were supposed to be, but no one knew what songs were to be on the music CD, what the art book contained, or how nice the statues would stand. For me personally, however, it was the documentary that intrigued me the most. A history of Sonic the Hedgehog put together by Sega themselves? They hadn’t done anything like that in years, and definitely never in English. As should be evident by the title, I’m not going to review the entire collector’s edition for one simple reason: I don’t have it. There are plenty of other people who have shown it off and gushed over the limited-edition ring (which I must admit is pretty nice), but because of the wonders of the Internet, anyone can watch the Sega of America-produced documentary. Now with six extra minutes straight from the horses mouth. So the question must be asked…is it any good? Continue Reading

Bad Sonic Cosplay, Britland Edition

It’s no secret that Great Britain loves celebrating made-up holidays, from “Bank Holiday” to “Another Bank Holiday.” Our friends across the pond need to learn to celebrate true national holidays, but alas, their newest blunder is “National Dress Like a Videogame Character Day.” The hard-hitting Metro has provided complete coverage of the inaugural celebration, and of course, Sonic was represented in the “festivities.”

Oh, who am I kidding. This is really all just pretense to post a bad photo.

Enjoy your evening, folks.
