SEGA has finally announced when we can expect Sonic CD to hit digital platforms. As it turns out, it will be released for most platforms tomorrow for only five bucks. Considering this is an all new version made by Christian “The Taxman” Whitehead with features like playable Tails, the Sonic 2 spindash, widescreen, 60FPS at all times and the ability to switch between both soundtracks, that’s a pretty good deal. However, if you live in the US and only have a PS3 you’ll have to wait until December 20th to buy the game. The Android and Windows Phone 7 versions have also been delayed until the new year and there’s no word on when the Steam version will be released, though The Taxman has said on the forums that it isn’t cancelled. SEGA also released a launch trailer for the game, which can be viewed here:
It shows a couple of the new features, so it’s worth a watch. Also note that at the end the trailer cuts to the Sonic CD logo right before Sonic goes past a future sign, maybe a teaser for things to come? Either way, it looks like this version of the game will be worth buying. Multiple times.
UPDATE: Ken Balough has said on the official SEGA forums that the PC version will be coming soon and that the release date was adjusted “slightly due to some outside factors”. A date will be announced soon.
SEGA Europe Ltd. and SEGA of America, Inc. today announced that fan favourite Sonic CD will be released on multiple platforms from tomorrow. Relive the story of the 1993 original, which sees Dr. Eggman again, attempting to take control of time by stealing the Time Stones from Little Planet. Sonic must speed through levels and travel through time whilst fending off Eggman’s robots to recover the Time Stones and save the smitten young hedgehog, Amy Rose.
The revamped version Sonic CD will include the original Japanese and US soundtracks as requested by the fans, and, for the first time, the ability to play the game as Sonic’s best friend Tails, unlockable by clearing the game for the first time. Sonic CD also features the first appearance of Metal Sonic, one of Sonic’s most enduring nemesis.
“Sonic’s 20th Anniversary has been a banner year for him – as well as for everyone at SEGA,” said Haruki Satomi, Senior Vice President of Digital Business at SEGA of America. “Gamers around the world are rediscovering their love of Sonic through his adventures, new and old. Whether you’re a long-time hedgehog aficionado looking to enjoy a favourite moment from Sonic’s past, or a brand-new player who wants to join in on the fun, there’s no better place to start than with one of Sonic’s most celebrated games, Sonic CD.”
Sonic CD will be available tomorrow from Xbox LIVE Arcade for the Xbox 360, priced at 400 Microsoft Points, the PlayStation Network in Europe for $5.00/£3.59/€4.49 /AUD$6.25 and iPhone, iPod touch, iPad for $4.99/AUD$5.49/Euro $3.99/UK £2.99. Sonic CD will be released on the PlayStation Network in America on 20th December and for Android and Windows Phone 7 devices in the New Year. Electronic Theatre will keep you updated with all the latest details on Sonic CD.
Really? Only 5 bucks? Shit, I’ll beat CD before Steam releases that update for Generations.
What?? Only $5!? I was expecting $10. Midnight buy!!! =D
“The Android and Windows Phone 7 versions have also been delayed until the new year”
Nooo 🙁 oh well, at least we have new info about the release for Android.
I heard the unused 510 Beta Loop for PPZ BF. I want to hug the magnificent bastard behind this move.
Wait wait wait… So PS3 version is out when, exactly? I’m confused.
It will be out on Playstation Network tommorow in Europe and next week in the US.
You said you didn’t have time to post this TimmiT
I said I had to go away after 10 minutes. When I got back I made the post.
A minor gripe, but it’s too bad we can’t have Tails follow Sonic: Only reason I bring that up is because I want to leave him in the dust during the race with Metal and sacrifice him to Eggaman’s giant F-you laser.
I’m only kidding. This is going to be awesome. XD
I bet you the future sign (notice it’s in all caps for a change), is a teaser for Sonic 4 Episode II.
T-t-t-TOMORROW!?!?!!! I AM SO PLAYIN’ THIS THING ON THE IPAD!
So its only releasing for the iPhone/iPad and Xbox tomorrow, and everything else is delayed? FFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Oh god, that wouldn’t been hilarious.
So now the iOS version has been pushed back to the 15th :/
this sucks i have to wait another week unless i sign up for a EU account here but i will be getting this for a simple $5 thats a shock with all the added bonuses here for the game i cant wait here to play it
It’s not like they could make Metal Sonic in Sonic 4-2 any more obvious.
Sega, this time you’re really doing it right. Seems flawless. Yes, I will buy it multiple times.
Now just tell me you’re doing this kind of work too behind the scenes for a Shenmue re-release. :3
when does the EU PSN Store update X_____X I’m going in and out of it every few minutes waiting till I see Sonic CD so I can download it XD!
Does anyone know if I can buy this off of the UK account with an American Debit Card? I have a UK account, and I don’t wanna wait a week. I do have a XBOX, but I would rather play it on PS3.
I will buy this for both iOS and PS3. This is how a port should be done. Excellent work.
For some reason, I am unable to directly respond to a person’s comment. My “Oh god, that wouldn’t been hilarious.” response was directed at Dark Aura’s comment.
Not available yet…I’m assuming it’ll be available in about an hours time. My Xbox is going to melt from overuse today!
Just fired it up… Massivley disappointed that the jap/euro soundtrack isn’t quite perfect. They’ve gone and taken out the vocals from the intro and I suspect the ending tunes. Everything else seems fine though. Dammit, Sega you always manage to screw something up when it comes to Sonic. Oh, well- on to Palmtree Panic I go!
Just downloaded this 🙂 can’t wait play it later today.
It’s fantastic but this is Retro so I must have a complaint. 🙂 It seems to take a half second longer to time warp…otherwise, it’s just about perfect. You can SEE THE SHIPS. My God. What an idea 🙂
My App store isn’t showing it. Where is it??
Maybe Classic Sonic in Sonic 4 Ep. 2? Or Metal Sonic travels in time?
I tell you, it’s definitely a faithful rebuild….they didn’t even leave out a few of those goofy Easter eggs.
Five dollars?! It’s only 2 for iOS!!!
Sega likes to keep games (that are not Football Manager) cheap on the App Store, TripleXero. Heck, Sonic CD currently costs less than Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 ($2.99 each) and costs as much as Sonic and Sega All-Star racing.
Am I complaining that Sonic CD is $2 instead of $5? Nope.
I played the game on a friend’s iPhone, and I must say…It’s just as awesome as the original, and the physics are the exact same as the original!
Although, I must admit: Since the built-in D-Pad isn’t actually real, the 2nd boss (Pinball) gave me a more frustrating time than in the original. At least it was beatable.
