NiGHTS is out on Steam Today and Transformed for Vita in the US Tomorrow

Why not kill two birds with one stone? Sega released the Steam (PC) version of their Sega Heritage version of NiGHTS into Dreams today. This also features the update seen on the console versions that adds 24 points of analog control for the same price as their other Heritage Releases. You can also have a glimpse of the original versions of these games on our Youtube channel. Also this week is the release of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed for Playstation Vita in US stores and the Playstation Store on the Sony Network on the 18th for $29.99

Perhaps we should make this a regular feature for Sonic & Sega releases. We’d have like a list of the games with info pages attached to look something like this…

New Trailer for Ron Gilbert/Double Fine’s The Cave

SEGA and Double Fine just released a new trailer for The Cave. For those who don’t know what this game is, The Cave is an upcoming puzzle platformer by Ron Gilbert (The Secret of Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion) and Double Fine Productions (Psychonauts, Brütal Legend) that’s being published by SEGA. It’s going to be a lot like those old point and click adventure games, except with a lot less pointing and clicking and more moving left and right and jumping. You have to choose from three of seven characters at the start of the game, all of which have their own quirks. This new trailer showcases four of these characters, and another upcoming trailer will showcase the rest of them. The game can also be played with up to three players in local co-op.

This is a seperate project from Double Fine’s upcoming crowd-funded point and click adventure game Double Fine Adventure, though Ron Gilbert is working on that game as well. The Cave comes out January 2013 on Xbox Live Arcade, Playstation Network, the Wii U eShop and Steam.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed: The Retro Review

The developers at Sumo Digital have tuned up their old car, shoved a jalapeno up the tailpipe, changed the belts, look, whatever generic trope you want to indicate for the existence of Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed. You know, that Sonic and Sega racing game? They made another one of those.

Without a doubt, it’s a better game than the predecessor. It’s more of everything: more vehicles, more characters, better physics, more track variety, and so on. It also does what it can to give character/item based racers the competitive edge that the genre has difficulty in reaching. On the other hand, the game has mishaps and hiccups that occur more often than it should which can cause the game to be a frustrating experience, especially in some of the game’s more heated situations.

UPDATED: Mega Man – The Wily Wars Returns to the US under one Ultimate Portable Package

Sega Channel exclusive no more! Sega and Capcom are teaming up to bring you not only Sonic the Hedgehog 1, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Super Street Fighter II, you also receive a copy of Mega Man – The Wily Wars which featured Mega Man 1, 2, 3 and an exclusive mini-game under one package.

Given the history of portable Genesis/Mega Drive units produced by At Games and Blaze who have also released other ___ Sega games in one Mega Drive units such as the Firecore, also known as the Blaze Sega Mega Drive, it’s highly likely all the games in the package will also suffer a number of sound and graphical emulation errors. You won’t be getting the perfect experience playing the game, but at least it’s on the go and has 37 games from Sega, 3 games from Capcom and 40 other unannounced titles. The unit is scheduled for release on November 13th.

UPDATE: As pointed out by Mathuser on the forums, AtGames’ website lists the user manual which also includes the complete list of games included.

HACK DETECTED: The manual also shows that they’re still using an older Sonic 2 HD logo. I–should somebody tell them?

Aliens Colonial Marines Impressions from Gearbox Community Day 2012

 

Gearbox’s Community Day 2012 happened recently which gave the general public another chance of checking out Aliens Colonial Maries before its release next year. On their showfloor were two different multiplayer game modes; Escape (Previously seen at PAX,) and Team Deathmatch (Previously seen at E3 and Gamestop’s Managers Conference.) All of which running on PC hardware with Xbox 360 game controllers. There was also this Borderlands 2 nonsense going on there. Something about a launch party? Its now available in stores and popular digital services? Adam Sessler? Whatever. We’re talking Aliens here.

You’ll also find a small image gallery pertaining to the Video Game History Museum as they were also on the floor showing off old video game memorabilia which showcased old pre-order bonuses, prototype hardware, prototype games, clothing and more. All this and more can be found after the jump.

[Updated] Pre-Order for Valkyria Chronicles 3 Artbook Available on Amazon.com

Good on Udon. Outside of the select music  tracks featured in the Humble Music Bundle a couple of months back, they’re set on releasing the corresponding artbook for Valkyria Chronicles 3 in the US and is now taking pre-orders on Amazon.com. Despite the fact that, well, we never got the game it represents. While it may seem rather ridiculous to see this artbook for sale, it is a possibility for Sega to try and test the waters for a US release of the game. Furthermore, it may see a new light yet through digital distribution on the Playstation Network for Playstation Portable or Playstation Vita owners due to Sega’s revised business strategy.

Or we could just be getting the artbook and piracy is still rampant on Sony devices. Such a harsh reality. On the plus side, there’ll be plenty of character biographies and story summaries to avoid all that pesky gameplay. The book’s release is set for December 2012.

Sega Doesn’t Know Their Own Heritage, Film at 11

In the modern video game landscape, it takes a lot to get me upset. I pledge no allegiance to any console. I’m not all that fussed about hype around upcoming games. I’m weirdly cool with online video game culture being dominated by male voices. What I am not cool with? Getting facts wrong. I don’t like it when clothing manufacturers get their heritage branding wrong, and I don’t like it when video game companies do it, either. So don’t tell me Sega was established in 1951.

In the interest of full disclosure, I have been working on and off for the past two years on a book about the history of Sega up to 1973 (when the company underwent a restructure and started to look much more like the Sega we’d recognize today), so I will be glossing over certain facts that I could give in more detail…to protect my own research. I do have solid paperwork and interviews for everything being stated here, though.

Now, I will say in fairness to Sega that their own history is not the easiest to understand, I fully understand how they got to the 1951 date. However, it’s not historically accurate: they should have chosen either 1945 or 1956, but not 1951. Heck, they could have even picked 1965 for Sega Enterprises as opposed to the Service Games branch. Let’s go.

SEGA Heritage Collection Trailer Released

SEGA just released a trailer showcasing the three upcoming digital re-releases of Jet Set Radio, NiGHTS Into Dreams and Sonic Adventure 2, which are all being released under the SEGA Heritage label. The video shows that all games will also feature video interviews with it’s developers.

It also confirms that Sonic Adventure 2 and NiGHTS Into Dreams will be coming to Steam, Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network in October. According to the Xbox Live leak back from June the Sonic Adventure 2 port will be released on October 3rd, 2012, so it’s somewhat safe to assume that it will be released then.
