Listen to Crush 40 and Alex Maklouhf’s Covers of Super Sonic Racing, Sonic Boom

Over at Sonic Boom, a small concert was thrown for the club’s goers by none other than Crush 40’s Jun Senoue and Johnny Gioeli, singing songs like Open Your Heart, His World, In The Wind, and Live and Learn to name a few. However, Alex Maklouhf from Cash Cash joined them on stage to also perform Sonic Colors’ Credits Theme, Speak With Your Heart.

So imagine some people’s reactions when they all got together and did new versions of Sonic R’s Super Sonic Racing and Sonic CD’s Sonic Boom, which were apparently one time performances for Sonic Boom attendees. Well, we got you covered.

Sonic 2006 TGS 2005 Theme Discovered

As a research site on the good (and bad) of the Sonic series, we couldn’t possibly let this one slip past us.

Russian Sonic site Sonic Scene posted what appears to be the music used in the very first trailer of the later ill-regarded Sonic The Hedgehog (2006). What’s special about all of this is the track was never used in game or, more over, released in any sort of auditory form aside from a trailer with off-mic noise.

But thanks to the efforts of Russian Sonic fan Mefiresu, he found a song that is strikingly similar to the audio used in the video. You can grab the near-five minute clip and listen for yourself right here.

“The Sound of Speed” Proves Too Fast For The Naked Eye

Huh. Feels like I just wrote about this. Oh well, doesn’t hurt to let everyone know that OverClocked Remix‘s latest album The Sound of Speed is now out for your listening pleasure. Available as both a direct download and as a torrent file (if you want to save their bandwidth and pretend it also helps the environment), all thirteen tracks on the album are full of Masato Nakamura goodness. Sure, you may find some of the arrangements aren’t your cup of tea, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to at least download and give it a listen.

Oh, look at that, it’s Tuesday. Man, if this was Sonic 2, I could make such an overused joke!

“Sound of Speed” Coming Soon To iPods Across the Nation

So it may not be a new Sonic game, but another teaser trailer came out a couple days before the hoopla involving Mr. Classic Sonic and his beige-eyelids. Music remix site Overclocked Remix (who have been responsible for more Sonic remixes than you can shake a stick at) have been quietly working on a happy little album that fans of Sonic music can get excited about. You know, if you’re into that sort of thing. Just in time for the blue blur’s 20th anniversary (and also OCR’s 25th album…wait that’s not the same number) comes The Sound of Speed, a 13-track album covering the entirety of the first Sonic the Hedgehog. Previously covering Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and 3 with Hedgehog Heaven and Project Chaos respectively, the album is sure to at least have one really good track. It’s not out yet, but project leader Halc released a trailer so you can hear snippets of each song with some classy gameplay footage (oh man Sonic is rolling). Since they generally don’t release a trailer until its almost here…well, it’s almost here.

Can’t wait for that Labyrinth Zone remix…as long as they don’t make me drown in the middle.

Sonicesque, Vol. I Music Album Released

Brand new forum member KGB525 comes out of nowhere today with a release retro Sonic fans are bound to be interested in–an original, 14-track album full of music inspired by the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive’s sound chip, the YM2612. Made using the VOPM VST, Reaper and a Yamaha M08 keyboard, Sonicesque, Vol. I takes inspiration from Mystic Cave Zone, Marble Zone among several other classic Sonic zones to create a collection of music that any Sonic fan is bound to like.

From KGB himself:

“Sonicesque, Vol. I” – an album of original songs in the style of the classic Genesis-era Sonic games. This is a tribute to Sonic composers like Masato Nakamura, whose melodic and rhythmically driven music made you want to play those levels again and again. Fans of Sonic music will enjoy nods to classic levels, such as “Mystic Cave Zone”, and “Marble Zone” among others. These are all original songs, written by myself, Karl Brueggemann. I recorded these using the VOPM VST, Reaper, and my Yamaha M08 keyboard. Thanks for listening, and let me know what you think!

You can listen to the album via its YouTube playlist or download the entire thing on Mediafire. Check out the forum thread here. To listen to more of KGB’s music, check out his website – KarlBrueggemann.com.

Actually, Propose With The “Gumball Rag”

It’s midnight. Crunch time. This is when you realize that the cholcolate you bought is actually six months old, the flowers are wilted, and your suit is still in the cleaners. That’s when you go to plan ‘B.’ You transform into Tom Brier and play the music from the Gumball Machine bonus stage in Sonic the Hedgehog 3:

Amy Rose’s dress is kinda like a flapper girl from the 1920’s anyway. So it works out a lot better than you might think! Besides, the music is pretty awesome anyway. It doesn’t get nearly as much love as it should. Even if it was used extensively in Sonic’s Schoolhouse.

It’s Sunday. Listen To This. Relax.

Love is in the air. Tomorrow, Valentine’s Day will be filling your lungs, and while I’m sure you’re all running about looking for that perfect gift, you should sit back and relax. Put your feet up. Have a chili dog. And listen to someone play Sonic the Hedgehog on the piano.

Sometimes I forget just how amazing the music to the first game is. Maybe someone here could use this music to propose to a loved one! Wouldn’t that be magical? Better than jumping out of a cake dressed as Sonic the Hedgehog and asking your loved one to be your Amy Rose.

Unless you’ve already done that. Then…um…god speed.

And yes, you’ve all heard it before. But it’s Sunday. Nothing new happens on a Sunday.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2×4: Album Of The Year

Once again, all-star Retro Member Skyler “Make Me A Staff Member So I Can Post This Myself” King delivers on the goods. Struck by musical inspiration, Skyler has dared to ask the question, “What would happen if Sonic the Hedgehog 2‘s music sounded as I truly imagined it?” And that is how Sonic 2×4 was born. Listen to the Emerald Hill Zone as if it were really Splash Hill. Marvel at Metropolis like you were running from a wall that wanted to ruin you. Be thankful the flippers work properly in Casino Night. And most importantly, wonder what would go through the mind of Masato Nakamura if he ever heard this.

Visit the official Retro thread here, or you can jump straight to download here or here. Play on, Sonic the Hedgehog.

Walk on the Ceiling – Theme of Sonic the Hedgehog 4

As tribute to Takashi Iizuka’s hallowing vision of Sonic the Hedgehog 4, I’ve recrafted the beautiful lyrics of Reach for the Stars, and elevated them to new heights. Brand new, never explored, never walked-on heights, to create a theme song worthy of being called the theme of Sonic the Hedgehog 4. It is truly the Sonic 4 theme song as you imagined it. Real talk.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles Soundtrack Remade in Famitracker

Have you ever wondered what Sonic 3 & Knuckles might sound like if it were using the NES sound hardware and its expansion chips to produce the music? YouTube user 8BitDanooct1 did; so much so, in fact, that he spent over 200 working hours–that’s about a month and a half–tirelessly making it a reality. The results are a real treat:

Pretty cool, right? Get the full soundtrack in both NSF and MP3 format here.
