Game Gear games are making a comeback. Right around the corner. Can’t miss them. Sega has found the perfect venue to funnel the Game Gear’s lineup onto a digital market, namely on the Nintendo 3DS which are slated for release next week.
Once again M2 will be heading the emulation package for each Game Gear Virtual Console title. They’re responsible for providing Virtual Console Mega Drive/Genesis titles on the Wii, Neo Geo emulators on Playstation 3 and Playstation Portable, and is also responsible for the latter SEGA Ages Collections on the Playstation 2.
Unlike Game Boy games on the 3DS Virtual Console, M2 will offer all the different options in a more up front manner through the touch screen menu. This includes changing the screen’s size, the Game Gear border to even creating a ‘ghosting’ effect to mimick the original system’s LCD. Additional options include button configuration and restore points that can all be activated mid-game.
Currently these are the confirmed titles for release on all territories.
Games will be priced for ¥300 in Japan, however other territories will feature varying prices. In the US, Triple Trouble will run for $4.99, Shinobi for $3.99, and Dragon Crystal for $2.99. In addition are games that have been revealed through rating board sites (As reported earlier) as well as Sega’s official 3DS Virtual Console page. Exact dates however remain unknown.
Game Gear games will be ready for next week’s 3DS eShop update. In the meantime, the eShop has information pages as well as gameplay videos available for the three titles listed for next week’s update. Be sure to check out the gallery to see Game Gear games in action on the 3DS as well as the upcoming lineup.

I hope Sonic Chaos will be on the Virtual Console some time in the future. 🙂 Though I can’t wait for this, though I own a working Game Gear but I don’t own any of those games… yet. :V
Kinda hoping Tails Adventure becomes downloadable soon
…Maybe also Sonic 2. I want to beat it and get the good ending and end my childhood nightmare of my initial experience with the game. I don’t care if using savestates is cheating.
I remember the game gear dear God did that thing eat batteries. but it was fun to play to bad i don’t have a Virtual consul or money, i would so try to get it.
as big of a Sonic fan i am i’m more interested in seeing Shinobi on this list
These ports will faithfully reproduce the Game Gear experience with the 3DS battery life and the desire to play any other game besides Sonic Labyrinth.
While these games aren’t as good as the Genesis titles, i still found Sonic Triple Trouble enjoyable, so i’ll probably get it when it comes out.
Are the games going to feature any 3D capabilities? I’m sure back when they announced Game Gear games (for release in Summer of 2011!), they were going to make them 3D, like the 3D classics.
Also, my Game Gear is amazing in not eating batteries. Must have got lucky!
Probably the only 3D effect on the Game Gear games will be similar to how the Game Boy games handle the 3D effect when the border is turned on. That is to say…not much. It would only pop the screen under the border. I couldn’t find much information on that aspect through M2’s press release.
If you’re looking for 3D Classics Remastering, I wouldn’t count on that anytime soon.
GG Shinobi – Best fucking game ever made… not kidding!
I’m dreaming of the day Sonic Pocket Adventure gets announced for the Virtual Console.
Oh, yeah! Pocket Adventure would possibly be one of the best Virtual Console purchases ever! Sega’s gotta get to that.
All this talk about adding the better part of the GameGear’s best software to the 3DS’s Virtual Console, and SEGA still won’t even mention bringing the Sonic Genesis titles to that system! They’ve already ported Sonic 1 to every damned phone and game console in existence, why not one more? Especially one that could do it perfectly without a hitch!
There’s no reason not to, the screen resolution is 1:1 perfect for all four of those titles, (Sonic 1 to Sonic & Knuckles.) and its system specs even give them room to be lazy about their emulator’s optimal performance! If they don’t have a good business-wise excuse for doing so, it’s going to be one more reason why I’ll be sticking to my phat DS. (Don’t even mention Sonic Classics, the bleeding spindash sounds and poorly compressed music killed it for me, even if it does run great on a DSi. Vanilla jEnesisDS is much easier to take seriously.)
tl;dr, I want to seriously apologize in advance if anyone was offended by that slightly off-topic rant; I’m just burned that Nintendo still haven’t transformed the 3DS’s eShop into the portable equivalent of the Wii’s Virtual Console yet; it would be stupid of even them not to grossly capitalize on most of the great 4th gen blockbuster hits all over again on a handheld system with the power to pull it off; it’s something I could have only dreamed of as a kid. I guess I’ll just have to buy a phat PSP on Ebay, find a working homebrew loader for its firmware version, and call it done.
