Sonic Advance Hitting Japanese Wii U Virtual Console

SAdvVC

It seems that Wii U owners are getting a new Sonic-related Virtual Console release in Sonic Advance. At least, in Japan only. For the time being. Maybe.

There’s currently no news on whether this will see release in other territories as of yet, or whether there are any plans to release the rest of the trilogy on the service – as is par for the course with most Virtual Console releases, unfortunately. So there may be some waiting for the rest of us.

It’ll be available on the Japanese eShop as of next week, priced at ¥702 (meaning roughly £3.90/$5.90/€5.15).

Also Mega Man & Bass is coming out over there too next week. Let’s hope we see that, too.

More Game Gear Sonic Games Headed to 3DS Virtual Console

429px-TA_US_Boxart

Nintendo has also unveiled additional information regarding Game Gear games appearing on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console during their previous Nintendo Direct. While they have mentioned of releasing at least four more titles previously, although the last time they said those games would appear soon was…a year ago. Nintendo has announced that they will be releasing them soon, again, as well as reveal more Game Gear titles which includes additional Sonic games as well as Tails’ second (and last?) game and even Dr. Robotnik’s own “game.”

There are more non-Sonic games appearing including Columns, Defenders of Oasis and Shining Force II: The Sword of Hajya. The full list can also be seen on our sister site, SEGAbits.

Sega Vintage Collection Redux

This week, Sega has released more from their vintage library for the modern consoles with the return of their Sega Vintage Collection line. Xbox 360 owners can invest in the game packs for 800 Microsoft Points, or individually on Playstation 3 for $5 each. These collections offers a variety of Master System, Mega Drive/Genesis and Arcade titles this time around, which also includes the release of Monster World IV which was released previously for the Nintendo Wii, now for next generation consoles.

These collections are significant, besides the fact that the Xbox Live Arcade releases come in packs of three, they’re being handled by M2 as opposed to Digital Eclipse/Backbone. Which also means a number of features that are actually interesting, which involve sound tests as well as leaderboards for the “Trial” mini games based around core sections of each game, replay modes that allow you to record and share your gameplay, and online multiplayer for supported titles. In addition, Super Hang-On features a 3D mode for 3D-enabled televisions. These packs include Alex Kidd & Co. and Monster World Collection this week. Next week will see the release of the Golden Axe Collection and the Streets of Rage Collection. Hit the jump for the complete list of games as well as screenshots.

Sonic Games Being Removed From Japanese Wii Virtual Console

This is bound to set off those of you against digital download services. Over in Japan, developers are beginning to pull games down from Nintendo’s Virtual Console service on the Wii. On top of WiiWare titles from the now-defunct Hudson and Irem’s library, Sega is pulling several Sonic titles from the service.

According to a report by Japanese website Inside-Games, these titles include the Mega Drive’s Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic The Hedgehog 2,  and Sonic & Knuckles, as well as the Master System version of  Sonic The Hedgehog. The titles are expected to be off the service by the end of the month. It’s currently unknown if other titles will disappear as well or if they will remain up for a while longer.

This development certainly begs a few questions: for those that bought the games and aren’t privy to the homebrew side of the Wii, will they be able to access the titles for redownloading? More importantly, will such a move make its way over to Western shores? It’s too soon to say, but the move is no doubt very discouraging for Virtual Console supporters.

Details on Game Gear Games on 3DS Virtual Console

Game Gear games are making a comeback. Right around the corner. Can’t miss them. Sega has found the perfect venue to funnel the Game Gear’s lineup onto a digital market, namely on the Nintendo 3DS which are slated for release next week.

Once again M2 will be heading the emulation package for each Game Gear Virtual Console title. They’re responsible for providing Virtual Console Mega Drive/Genesis titles on the Wii, Neo Geo emulators on Playstation 3 and Playstation Portable, and is also responsible for the latter SEGA Ages Collections on the Playstation 2.

Unlike Game Boy games on the 3DS Virtual Console, M2 will offer all the different options in a more up front manner through the touch screen menu. This includes changing the screen’s size, the Game Gear border to even creating a ‘ghosting’ effect to mimick the original system’s LCD. Additional options include button configuration and restore points that can all be activated mid-game.

Currently these are the confirmed titles for release on all territories.

Games will be priced for ¥300 in Japan, however other territories will feature varying prices. In the US, Triple Trouble will run for $4.99, Shinobi for $3.99, and Dragon Crystal for $2.99. In addition are games that have been revealed through rating board sites  (As reported earlier) as well as Sega’s official 3DS Virtual Console page. Exact dates however remain unknown.

Game Gear games will be ready for next week’s 3DS eShop update. In the meantime, the eShop has information pages as well as gameplay videos available for the three titles listed for next week’s update. Be sure to check out the gallery to see Game Gear games in action on the 3DS as well as the upcoming lineup.

SEGA releasing iPhone Genesis emulator (for free)!

SEGA Ultimate Genesis Emulator for iPhone

SEGA: Ultimate Genesis for the iPhone (source: Gizmodo)

According to Gizmodo, SEGA is ready to release an iPhone/iPod Touch app called “Ultimate Genesis” which is, for all intents and purposes, a SEGA-exclusive virtual console for the iPhone. The app itself should be making its appearance on the app store in early February while being packaged with one game – Space Harrier II. It will be a free download where users will purchase what will basically be Genesis ROMs within the app to add to their collection. The offerings that should be available from day one are:

  • Sonic the Hedgehog: $5.99
  • Golden Axe: $4.99
  • Ecco the Dolphin: $2.99
  • Shining Force: $2.99

As you can see, different games will be available at different price points for the time being. It should be noted that both Sonic and Golden Axe are already available in the App Store at those price points where as Ecco and Shining Force are not. SEGA may be pricing Sonic and Golden Axe simply to be consistent with the versions available in the app store while $2.99 may be the standard price for most games from here on. It is unknown if those who purchased Sonic or Golden Axe stand alone will be able to transfer those games to Ultimate Genesis when it’s released.
