E3 2014 Hands-On Preview: Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal (3DS)

(Thanks to Shigs from our sister-site SEGAbits for providing the write up! Go check them out, they’re classy people.)
Nuckles87 and I have been at odds with the Sonic Boom games at E3. While he was more forgiving of Rise of Lyric on Wii U, I found it a dull and mediocre experience overall. However, for Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal on 3DS, I really enjoyed this platformer while Nux was not as pleased. Surprisingly, I agreed with most of his complaints, but it didn’t affect my enjoyment of the game. So what’s in this game that makes me not only enjoy it much more than Sonic Boom on Wii U, but might be my favorite Sonic game on 3DS? Read on.

E3 2014 Hands-On Preview: Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric (Wii U)

Preview by nuckles87 | View all SEGAbits E3 coverage here
Sonic has been reinvented countless times over the years, to the point where the character has time and time again become unrecognizable in every way except his name, speed and trademark attitude. Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric represents the latest of those reinventions and is one of the most radical re-imaginings since Sonic made the transition to 3D fifteen years ago. Nothing has been held as sacred here, with Sonic Boom effectively acting as a near complete teardown of what past games were.
For one, this game isn’t just about speed and platforming, but also features a variety of brawling centric levels. Though very few speed areas were on display, the final game will apparently feature a mix of speed areas and brawling areas, rather than keeping them segregated from one another as they were in the demo. Since there were no real speed areas on display in the demo, this preview will be focusing mostly on the game’s combat areas. Continue Reading

E3 2014: Sonic Boom: The TV Series Trailer

Do you like the humor in Sonic Boom, but you don’t want any of that “having to put effort into playing a game” stuff? Well, this new trailer for the tv show shows off plenty of that. While part of this trailer was already seen in the first trailer, it does show plenty of new plot and funny jokes from seemingly the first episode.
It also has Eggman standing on a tiny hoverboard. Yes, Eggman on a tiny hoverboard.

E3 2014: Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric (Wii U) Trailer Features a Cyborg Lizard

And after seeing the gameplay a couple of days ago, it’s time to check out what the story in Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric is like in this trailer with epic music and a narrator with a deep voice telling you what’s happening with Sonic these days. Turns out he has to go up against Lyric, a villain who is over a thousand years old yet recognizes Sonic for some reason. Eggman pops up in the trailer as well, not doing much more than correcting his glorious mustache. The trailer also shows new levels and bosses, along with some cutscenes.
Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric is coming to Wii U this November. Be sure to take a look at the new trailer for Shattered Crystal as well.

E3 2014: Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal (3DS) Trailer

As part of E3 2014, Nintendo put up a new trailer for the 3DS’ Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal. Developed by Sanzaru Games, the game more than enough resembles a passing glance to other Sonic handheld titles, namely anything DIMPS developed from Sonic Rush to Sonic Generations (3DS). The game differs from its Wii U counterpart in that it’s an entirely different adventure where the new villain Lyric has kidnapped Amy. Filling her place in the team is series newcomer Not-MarineSticks.
The design of the game is much closer to an exploration style (think a Metroidvania, but not so complex) where using Sonic, Tails, Knuckles or Sticks can unlock new areas to explore. The energy whips also prominently feature as a means of combat or progressing through the stage. The game is set to hit this November.

Sonic Boom’s New Character: Sticks the Not-Marine Revealed

sticks0
The first new character for Sonic Boom has been revealed. This character had already been spotted in a leaked poster and concept art and at the time some thought that she may be Marine the Raccoon from Sonic Rush Adventure, but it turns out that she’s just called Sticks. And no, her name doesn’t end with “the Something”, though she is a badger.

This new character is voiced by Nika Futterman, who describes her as really intelligent, but that the things that she says just come off as really strange. Or in other words, she’s the crazy character who comes up with conspiracies that don’t really make sense and puts sports tape around her boomerang. She’ll pop up in both the Sonic Boom games and TV show and will be best friends with Amy Rose. You can read SEGA’s official announcement and see some more art of her after the jump. Continue Reading

Sonic Boom 2014 in New York City, Summer of Sonic Details Revealed

SU_Black6Los Angeles, San Diego, St. Louis. Next stop: Empire City itself, New York City. Sega of America’s official blog confirmed that the East Coast now gets its chance to show the West Coast what kind of Sonic fans they are (sane, we hope.) Sonic Boom 2014 will be taking place in the evening of Oct. 4 from the Grand Ballroom at the Manhattan Center. It’s safe to expect Sonic Boom (the game) to be at the event, along with a Crush 40 musical performance and a Q&A with Takashi Iizuka.
After last year’s Q&A, let’s just hope we get some better questions going so Iizuka, as entertaining as it was to watch, doesn’t go full troll mode. For example:
Fan: “Where’s Froggy?”
Iizuka: “He’s with Big.”
Fan: “…so, where’s Big?”
Iizuka: “He’s with Froggy.”
Priceless.

High-Res Photo of Sonic Boom Prototype Pops Up

SonicBoomprototypeleak Like the photo showing various concept art from last month, we’re not quite sure where it came from, but a photo of an early version of Sonic Boom running on a Wii U CAT-DEV dev kit has popped up online. Of course, unless the final game will miss a lot of textures and run at 15fps and, this isn’t an indication of what the final game will look like. Be sure to click the image for a larger version.
Apparently Nintendo doesn’t want photos of the Wii U dev kit flying around, so to prevent us from getting our door kicked in we’ll just show the cropped version provided by The Sonic Stadium. Nothing is stopping us from putting a link to the full image posted by Spindash.de forum member Finn here though, which also shows us that the photo was taken in January 2014. So there’s your timeframe for when this build was made.  A lower res version of the image was originally posted at AP, but has since been removed.

Sonic Boom Concept Art Shows New Character Designs

Bob Rafei
We’re not quite sure where it came from, but a new photo of the Big Red Button office has surfaced. This photo shows Bob Rafei sitting next to a board with concept art for new characters and enemies that will appear in the Sonic Boom game for Wii U. The image was found by Sonic Stadium forum members Eitarou and A Real Human Bean, though where they actually found the photo isn’t clear. Be sure to click it to see it in the full resolution. Another SSMB member, Storme Prince, distorted the picture to give a clearer view of the new characters.
