12 Days of Sonic Retro Christmas 2011: Day 3

On the third day of Christmas, Retro gave to me…

…a huge poster scan of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Now, we’ve all seen the cover to the Sonic the Hedgehog promotional comic that came out back in 1991 in the United States. Drawn in that very familiar American artstyle…well, you can argue the pros and cons of how he ended up looking. Either way, you can’t dismiss the fact the image is iconic. But since the most common scan of that cover has a very large crease in the middle, and the fact that it’s a comic book cover so it automatically has all sorts of text and icons scattered about, there hasn’t been any super huge awesome clean scan of it.

Courtesy of Sonic Retro member jlmcr87, this has all changed. Possessing the poster version of the image (which means no text save the Sonic the Hedgehog and Sega logos), you can now download it at the extreme resolution of 4905 x 6956. That’s suitable for framing! If you have the means, you can make a print and hang it in your house, just in time for your most recent Christmas party. Imagine how your guests will swoon over your wall! It could very well be the best Christmas ever. Just go ahead and click on the image above to get the extreme version. Just be wary of the file size. Might not be such a good idea for you to try and view it on your iPhone.

Sonic Nendoroid Figure Looks Like a Mix of Both Generations

Today Good Smile Company announced a Sonic Nendoroid figure. If you don’t know what Nendoroids are, they are figures usually based on anime or manga characters (Sonic being an exception) made in a style with a huge head and small body. They are about 10 cm or 4 inch in height and are adjustable, meaning you can put them in various poses or give them different facial expressions.

The Sonic figure is based on the modern iteration, meaning it basicly looks like classic Sonic with green eyes (heh) and a thinner body. It comes with the item box, chaos emerald and checkpoint items shown in the pictures and will be released in April 2012 for ¥3,500, which is about $45 according to Google.

Online Sonic Merchandise Store Opens Up For Europe

With popular video game characters usually come merchandise, and Sonic is no exception. In fact, he has so much merchandise there might as well be a store dedicated to it. It seems like SEGA had this idea, as they have launched an official online store with Sonic figurines, posters, DVDs and more. So if you were looking for a site where you can buy a DVD box-set of the complete series of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog or a poster with classic Sonic, you found it. That is, if you live in Europe, the store doesn’t ship anywhere else at the moment, sorry Americans. The site uses a reward point system, so if you buy a product you’ll get a certain amount of points which you can use to pay part of a different product.

Pix ‘N Love Set To Release L’Histoire de Sonic The Hedgehog

One of the things I’ve always lamented about is the fact that there has never been a proper written history of Sonic the Hedgehog. Sure, the story has been touched upon by short and/or poorly made documentaries, and the English did have magazines about the history of Sonic. However, there has never been a comprehensive single printed volume of the twists and turns of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. That is about to all change…as long as you’re able to speak French.

Sonic CD Japanese Soundtrack Announced, Plus Sonic 1&2 Track Listing

For being a game that has caused a musical debate for well over a decade, Sonic the Hedgehog CD has never seen its original Japanese soundtrack released. Sure, nearly all the songs for the Spencer Nilsen soundtrack composed for the North American release were seen on the CD Sonic Boom (which itself was a pre-order bonus for Sonic the Hedgehog 3), and one can not forget the excellent Japan-exclusive Sonic the Hedgehog Remix, which used the Japanese soundtrack as its inspiration. But the songs originally composed by Naofumi Hataya and Masafumi Ogata have never seen a stand alone release. Hot on the heels of the best-of compilations for the “Dreamcast Era” of Sonic, Wavemaster continues to celebrate Sonic’s 20th anniversary in style by announcing the Sonic the Hedgehog CD Original Soundtrack 20th Anniversary Edition. Calling itself the first complete release of the game’s music, it’s sure to cause some people to get very excited to relive the soundtrack Ohshima demanded be on there.

Set to be released on November 23rd, the disc looks to be the best desert one could expect for the 20th anniversary, winding down after the main course that is Sonic Generations. But that appetizer we have been waiting patiently for? We knew how many tracks there were going to be, but the list has finally been revealed.

The Strangest Things Show Up At Conventions

And I don’t mean the con goers.

Yesterday, I joined a few friends on a trip to Florida Supercon, which meant two things: getting more StreetPass hits on the 3DS (32! If you went, look for a Mii named Gene. I got a person from Sega Bits, so…) and humiliating people in the gaming room. But no self respecting con is complete without a dealer room with overpriced or weird items, like a remote control miniature tank that fires B.B. gun pellet for $70. Awesome.

But this isn’t about a toy that can be used for amazing purposes. Instead, enjoy oddities such as Sonic themed snuggies (robes you wear backwards) and bath robes. Other than that, it’s the typical showing of those little Sonic beanie hats in Sonic, Shadow, and Super Sonic varieties at $18 (!) a pop.

Apologies for the shaky quality. I was using my cellphone and the lighting wasn’t great.

SDCC 2011: A Fuzzy Sonic Figure You Can’t Have… Or Can You?

For those of you going to this year’s San Diego ComicCon, you’ll have the opportunity to pick up that blue statue on the right if you manage to stop by Toys R Us’ booth and pick up the SDCC exclusive figure.

So what the heck is so special about this figure from any other molded piece of plastic Sonic? Figure creator Jazwares is touting this as the world’s first ever “flocked deluxe” action figure, which means that parts of Sonic are covered in fiber materials to make it feel like plush fur on the blue spiky one.

Not all is lost for those that can’t make it to San Diego between July 21 and July 24. On the last day of the event, Toys R Us will be selling these figures via their website for action figure fans to swarm in and gobble up.

The figure stands at a height of 10 inches/254mm and can be posed as you see fit.

Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2 Original Soundtracks Announced

There are many reasons why the classic Sonic titles have resonated with everyone for the last twenty years. The memorable characters, the amazing art design, the wondrous level layouts, the ability to roll to your heart’s content…but it wouldn’t be the Sonic experience without the music. Heck, even the worst games in the series still have had amazing music. But unfortunately, the games that started it all have never had a proper music release.

That’s why we should all be very, very excited about what’s in the pipeline. For the first time ever, the original Sonic the Hedgehog and its sequel are getting the full treatment, the 16-bit genius of Masato Nakamura finally getting the respect it deserves. For you see, it’s not just a case of a simple game rip being hastily thrown onto a music CD. Though a track listing hasn’t been released just yet, there are meant to be numerous bonus tracks. Is the full version of DREAMS COME TRUE’s SWEET SWEET SWEET going to be on there? Perhaps. But for the first time ever, the original demo tapes to the game’s music is going to be released. Yes, the music at its earliest, rawest form finally available for the masses. This is content people thought was lost to the ages, or at least buried so deep in Sega’s vaults that they would never bother to put it together.

A release date for the compilation has yet to be announced, but expect it to come out at some point this year in Japan. No word yet on a western release, so you may be forced to import the disc to celebrate Sonic’s 20th anniversary in style.

If the cover on your iDevice is just looking a bit too blasé for you, consider checking out a new line of Sonic the Hedgehog and classic Sega game console iPhone covers by Japanese manufacturer CaféReo. These polycarbonate cases, which fit iPhone 4 16 and 32GB models, are part of the Sotogawa line of licensed iPhone covers. Australia, France and Spain Get A Dreamcast Vinyl

Much like the Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection vinyl album given with pre-orders of the game in Australia, Sega is releasing a six-track album to commemorate the release of Dreamcast Collection in Australia, France and Spain.

Australians can get in on picking up this album if they pre-order the game at JB Hi-Fi, though Sega stresses supplies are very limited. It’s currently unknown which retailers will be offering these albums in Europe.

So what’s on the album? On side A, you’ll find “Open Your Heart” from Sonic Adventure and  “Option Remix 2002” from Space Channel 5: Part 2. Side B is nothing but crazy money, containing “Radical Sabbatical”, “Flinch”, and “Get Out” from Crazy Taxi.

Say what you will about the collection of games itself, but this is a pretty nifty pickup for Sega and music enthusiasts.
