Sonic CD Japanese Soundtrack Announced, Plus Sonic 1&2 Track Listing

For being a game that has caused a musical debate for well over a decade, Sonic the Hedgehog CD has never seen its original Japanese soundtrack released. Sure, nearly all the songs for the Spencer Nilsen soundtrack composed for the North American release were seen on the CD Sonic Boom (which itself was a pre-order bonus for Sonic the Hedgehog 3), and one can not forget the excellent Japan-exclusive Sonic the Hedgehog Remix, which used the Japanese soundtrack as its inspiration. But the songs originally composed by Naofumi Hataya and Masafumi Ogata have never seen a stand alone release. Hot on the heels of the best-of compilations for the “Dreamcast Era” of Sonic, Wavemaster continues to celebrate Sonic’s 20th anniversary in style by announcing the Sonic the Hedgehog CD Original Soundtrack 20th Anniversary Edition. Calling itself the first complete release of the game’s music, it’s sure to cause some people to get very excited to relive the soundtrack Ohshima demanded be on there.

Set to be released on November 23rd, the disc looks to be the best desert one could expect for the 20th anniversary, winding down after the main course that is Sonic Generations. But that appetizer we have been waiting patiently for? We knew how many tracks there were going to be, but the list has finally been revealed.

Although there really aren’t that many surprises, it’s nice to know just what to expect on the Sonic the Hedgehog 1&2 Official Soundtrack that by all rights we should have gotten back in 1992 if Japan had cared about Sonic. While the first disc looks to just be the Mega Drive versions of the songs that have been ingrained in our subconscious, the second disc looks to give us the demo of every main track on the first. Heck, we even get a “unused song” and its demo, though it would be way more appropriate to call it a “hidden song.” Oh man, I’m so clever. But what may be of most interest is the “Theme of Sonic the Hedgehog Demo.” At first glance one would assume it’s just the title screen music, but that is also listed on the CD. Could it just be a slightly extended version that incorporates the beginning bits of the credits medley? Could it be something else entirely? Either way, here’s the track list courtesy of cdjapan:

That third disc might just be a glorified CD single, but the rest more than makes up for it. Besides, if your taste is in remixes, you know you’re going to just pick up the Sonic Generations soundtrack when it comes out. Either way, keep an eye out for Sonic the Hedgehog 1&2 Soundtrack coming out October 19th.

How to round off the post…oh, how about this video of Jun Senoue from the Tokyo Game Show playing songs from Generations? Yes, it’s old now. But it was never on the front page to begin with, and now seems like the best time to revisit it since it has Chemical Plant music.

Now all we need is Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s music released, and we’re all set. Well, and maybe a slightly better sounding release of the Sonic & Knuckles tracks then what we got.

Great news about Sonic CD, should we expect a remix maybe Sonic Boom by Crush 40 for the anniversary? :V I’m glad the ORIGINAL Japanese soundtrack is finally getting the treat it deserves, whoever plays Sonic CD with the western soundtrack hadn’t experience the game right and he/she shall feel bad for that, I first played it on Gems Collection and while I liked the soundtrack, after getting the Sega CD iso I never went back to the western soundtrack ever again!

I never understood the point.. I mean, you just pop the SEGA CD disc into a CD player and the whole soundtrack is already on it. Well, except for all the Past stages.

some of the tracks were cut in the in-game disk so I believe they’re releasing the full length tracks instead like Cosmic Eternity, also the past stages aren’t available, and from a soundtrack disk you can either download them to your itunes or rip the songs and add them to your ipod…

Would it be possible NOT TO HAVE THE AKON MIX’S?!?!?!

Seriously I never asked for this, I’m just going to delete them from the CD permanently. Ear-bleeding mess of songs they are.

Well, just imagine it as a “Knuckles in Sonic 2” Ending.

How would a American from Chicago be able to obtain these soundtracks? Is it something I gotta get on Amazon or can I buy these at a local Best Buy? I would really like to buy the Sonic Generations soundtrack.

I’m a bit confused. The Sonic CD thing calls itself a complete release… It’s just the JP version tho, right?

No hate for the JP version, but if it is both region’s soundtracks it’s a buy, if it’s just the JP tracks it’s a big “meh.”

Really cool news tho. Game music nerds everywhere, rejoice. =)

Think ’bout the american Sonic CD as the same thing 4kids does to animes. Except Sega of America hadn’t cut levels or sprites.

      • Reply

Why are you assuming that I’ve not heard both? I like the US soundtrack better. Both soundtracks are great and for you to equate the US soundtrack to 4Kids anime is a great injustice to the awesome ambient tracks on the US Soundtrack. I mean I understand many prefer the JP version, but don’t assume you are talking to a 3D generation n00b.

4kids’ american soundtracks are also awesome ambiented tracks. Both can be great, but still, Sonic CD was never meant to have that american soundtrack. If it was all that great, why is Naofumi Hataya composing for Sonic until this very day, while never more of Spencer Nilsen was heard about in this world? Also, dunno where did I read this, but it was somewhere around here: Due to the Past tracks being coded in the game, Spencer did not compose for them, he only did the Present and Future tracks, making Sonic CD lose the entire feeling of time-travelling.

Also, one doesn’t need to be a 3D Generation Noob for me to disagree with something from that person. BTW, not american-speaking country here, so, no bashing on my lack of grammar concordance in some sentences..

You sound just like those kids who say “Sonic Adventure is the better game and Jun Senoue is better than Masato Nakamura”

      • Reply

No need to be defensive. Anyway, you an officially reginalized soundtrack doesn’t make it 4Kids material. When you say it is the equivalent of what 4Kids does, you imply that it is a cheap butchered piece of crap, which is insultive to everyone who enjoyed it. As far as your personal critique of the Past tracks, as someone who played it when it was new I can say that the style change for the past tracks usually only added to the feel, like a sense of surrealism to the past. Also, the soundtrack is an OFFICIAL SEGA release. It’s okay to be a purist and want “the original” soundtrack as it, was intended by the developers, but that is no reason  to act the US track should be downplayed as non-cannon, especially when it’s both a matter of taste (doesn’t effect the story at all) and an official SEGA release, because to many, myself included, the US soundtrack is the way the game should be played. In my humble opinion, a true “complete release” would include both soundtracks. How awesome would that be?

        • Reply

Well… US Soundtrack would be great as just that “Sonic Boom” CD released, apart from the game, like that Virtual Sonic album from Horward Drossin. I wonder how many people, not counting those who were raised with the US Soundtrack, find it better than the Jap tracks.

PS: Not a cheap butchered piece of crap. A Expensive butchered piece of crap.
