Snowmageddon and Sonic: Best Winter Level?

Here at Sonic Retro World HQ, we’re in the middle of a blizzard, and I couldn’t help but think of the many winter-cliche levels that exist throughout the Sonic series, from Robotnik Winter Zone and Ice Cap to Cool Edge and White Acropolis. Heck, even some levels that don’t explicitly have a frost-season theme could probably benefit from the idea (someone’s going to need to refrigerate Sweet Mountain, after all.) Different levels over the years have tackled the concept in a variety of ways: slippery ice leading to skids, dangerous icicles falling everywhere, icy blasts which freeze Sonic, and even robotic snowmen (I don’t know what that’s all about, either.)

But what level is the King of Winter Levels? I’ve divided the majority of the series’ iterations of the idea into completely arbitrary divisions to determine what the best winter-themed environment. If you need to get up to speed with your winter themes, we have a nice compilation of the genre in our info section. Tomorrow, I’ll post the winners of each division for a final vote.

My apologies to all the diehard Sonic Drift 2 fans who wanted to vote for Ice Cap. Keep the dream alive, all three of you.

Awesome Chaotix is…Well, Awesome.

Animator Egoraptor, known for his video game parodies, is pretty much concerned with all things awesome–so much so that he has a whole animated webseries about the intersection of games and awesomeness. You may remember Awesome the Hedgehog from 2006. Nearly five years later, Egoraptor has teamed up with voice actor Joshua Tomar to come back with Awesome Chaotix. It’s a definite step up in terms of animation from the last time you may have checked him out (not to mention it’s still pretty great), so you should take a look.

“Sonic-Grams” Vol. 3: Everyone Loves Tails

Today, issue #221 of Sonic the Hedgehog hits comic shops across the country, which means in only four short months another anniversary issue will be in the hands of those who still care. So for the month of June, you’ll get to read…issue #226. Which is almost as cool, right? Either way, it’s that time again. Another Wednesday, another volume of “Sonic-Grams.” So we can sigh at our younger selves, cringe at our words, and be baffled at how we still can’t form coherent sentences. Charge up those spin-dashes, people! Just remember, back then you didn’t have to hold forward afterwards to have it send you more than two feet.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2×4: Album Of The Year

Once again, all-star Retro Member Skyler “Make Me A Staff Member So I Can Post This Myself” King delivers on the goods. Struck by musical inspiration, Skyler has dared to ask the question, “What would happen if Sonic the Hedgehog 2‘s music sounded as I truly imagined it?” And that is how Sonic 2×4 was born. Listen to the Emerald Hill Zone as if it were really Splash Hill. Marvel at Metropolis like you were running from a wall that wanted to ruin you. Be thankful the flippers work properly in Casino Night. And most importantly, wonder what would go through the mind of Masato Nakamura if he ever heard this.

“Sonic-Grams” Vol. 2: Sonic and Eggman Can Never Die

Ah, another Wednesday, another edition of Sonic-Grams. If I keep up this schedule, we might actually have a feature beyond the Monday Links that lasts. For those of you who may have forgotten, this is when Sonic Retro takes a look back to a time when Sonic fans were still young, impressionable, and full of hope because their beloved franchise hadn’t entered its downward spiral. Rummaging through the many issues of Archie’s Sonic the Hedgehog, we’ve once again gathered letters from the golden age of Sonic comic-dom. Some good, some bad, but all charming in their own way. So, without further ado, let’s get onto it, shall we?

“Sonic-Grams” Vol. 1: Once Upon A Time In The Great Forest

The Sonic the Hedgehog fanbase has a very unique reputation. Made up of fans from across the globe, it is split up in so many directions that it can cause your head to spin. People who love the old games, the new games, one of the four TV shows, the American comic, the English comic, the Japanese comics, the OVA…people who love to talk about who Sonic should marry or how he should sound or what he should look like…yeah, it’s not hard to see why the Sonic fandom isn’t the most well-respected on the planet. There are those who yearn for a simpler time, when half of those continuities didn’t exist and the fandom seemed to be a bit more gelled together, giving off the impression that it wasn’t as bad as it is nowadays. And with SEGA getting ready to celebrate Sonic’s 20 years of existence, isn’t it only right to celebrate 20 years of the fanbase? To remember the good ol’ days? And what better way to do that then to turn back the “page” of history, and look fondly at “Sonic-Grams,” the first physical form of communication for numerous Sonic the Hedgehog fanatics…

…and realize that we really haven’t come that far at all.

Cozy up for Sonic’s Christmas Blast

Not one to be left out of the tradition of having a Christmas cartoon spinoff, Sonic too had a Christmas special, which includes a few cameos from the SatAM saga while being firmly based in the world of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Note the slightly higher quality animation. Sparkly.

Grab some cocoa or some egg nog and kick back. David may have given you 12 days of gifts, but here’s one more for you all.

Because we love to spoil you here at Retro. Merry Christmas, everyone! Hit the jump for the other parts.

On The Twelfth Day Of Christmas, Retro Gave To Me…

So this is Christmas. In reality, it’s not all that different from other Christmases. There’s snow outside, a fire inside, gifts under the tree…well, unless you don’t celebrate Christmas and find it all just one big consumer monstrosity. But that’s ok, because hiding under all those layers of consumerism is the true spirit of Christmas, full of good will towards men and happiness to all. And really, when we were young, fruitful, and full of spirit, what was it under the Christmas tree that brought so much joy to our youth? Why of course. Sonic the Hedgehog!

On The Ninth Day Of Christmas, Retro Gave To Me…

…British men playing Sonic on the telly.

Though us “crazy Americans” had a show or two about video games in the 90’s that never went anywhere, our fellow Sonic fans “across the pond” were lucky that they got numerous shows that lasted for numerous “series.” (see guys they don’t call a years’ worth a “season.” Sure that maybe one of you learned something today!)

The granddaddy of them all was a little show called Gamesmaster, which was half review show, half video game competition, and altogether awesome. And a little freaky (there’s this floating head you see oh god what is that).

For it’s sixth series’ Christmas special, the producers decided to have a “Christmas quiz show” and…well, take a look for yourself:

On The Eighth Day Of Christmas, Retro Gave To Me…

…a video Google helped me make.

Just remember: it’s meant to be funny. A “gentle ribbing,” if you will. If you don’t find it funny, don’t immediately think that it is an attack on your favorite hedgehog/developer. This is still Sonic Retro, for all that’s worth. We’re supposed to be a lot more blatant when we insult people!

At lest it fulfills the “physics” requirement of Retro!

…that wasn’t very long at all. We’re going to need some bonus material up in here.
