Sonicesque, Vol. I Music Album Released

Brand new forum member KGB525 comes out of nowhere today with a release retro Sonic fans are bound to be interested in–an original, 14-track album full of music inspired by the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive’s sound chip, the YM2612. Made using the VOPM VST, Reaper and a Yamaha M08 keyboard, Sonicesque, Vol. I takes inspiration from Mystic Cave Zone, Marble Zone among several other classic Sonic zones to create a collection of music that any Sonic fan is bound to like.

From KGB himself:

“Sonicesque, Vol. I” – an album of original songs in the style of the classic Genesis-era Sonic games. This is a tribute to Sonic composers like Masato Nakamura, whose melodic and rhythmically driven music made you want to play those levels again and again. Fans of Sonic music will enjoy nods to classic levels, such as “Mystic Cave Zone”, and “Marble Zone” among others. These are all original songs, written by myself, Karl Brueggemann. I recorded these using the VOPM VST, Reaper, and my Yamaha M08 keyboard. Thanks for listening, and let me know what you think!

You can listen to the album via its YouTube playlist or download the entire thing on Mediafire. Check out the forum thread here. To listen to more of KGB’s music, check out his website – KarlBrueggemann.com.

Actually, Propose With The “Gumball Rag”

It’s midnight. Crunch time. This is when you realize that the cholcolate you bought is actually six months old, the flowers are wilted, and your suit is still in the cleaners. That’s when you go to plan ‘B.’ You transform into Tom Brier and play the music from the Gumball Machine bonus stage in Sonic the Hedgehog 3:

Amy Rose’s dress is kinda like a flapper girl from the 1920’s anyway. So it works out a lot better than you might think! Besides, the music is pretty awesome anyway. It doesn’t get nearly as much love as it should. Even if it was used extensively in Sonic’s Schoolhouse.

It’s Sunday. Listen To This. Relax.

Love is in the air. Tomorrow, Valentine’s Day will be filling your lungs, and while I’m sure you’re all running about looking for that perfect gift, you should sit back and relax. Put your feet up. Have a chili dog. And listen to someone play Sonic the Hedgehog on the piano.

Sometimes I forget just how amazing the music to the first game is. Maybe someone here could use this music to propose to a loved one! Wouldn’t that be magical? Better than jumping out of a cake dressed as Sonic the Hedgehog and asking your loved one to be your Amy Rose.

Unless you’ve already done that. Then…um…god speed.

And yes, you’ve all heard it before. But it’s Sunday. Nothing new happens on a Sunday.

Eggman Hates Furries

Sonic fan games have always had a special place in my heart. It’s where I started in the Sonic scene! From Sonic Boom to Sonic Fan Remix, they all have one thing in common: a vision to create a Sonic game that can be enjoyed and shared by everyone the world over.

Recently, I had been checking for new fan game releases, and I came upon a fan game by Oddwarg that seems to stick out above the rest.

Eggman Hates Furries. Fast and frantic, this Sonic fan game has you on the edge of your seat until the very end (an ending which you won’t see coming, I can tell you that), and is executed flawlessly as levels flow into each other, and the boss fights make you freak out, wondering what they might do next. The trailer for the game doesn’t do it justice, so I highly recommend downloading it. Right now. Also, check out the other games Oddwarg has on his site. Super Sawman is a classic.

Awesome Chaotix is…Well, Awesome.

Animator Egoraptor, known for his video game parodies, is pretty much concerned with all things awesome–so much so that he has a whole animated webseries about the intersection of games and awesomeness. You may remember Awesome the Hedgehog from 2006. Nearly five years later, Egoraptor has teamed up with voice actor Joshua Tomar to come back with Awesome Chaotix. It’s a definite step up in terms of animation from the last time you may have checked him out (not to mention it’s still pretty great), so you should take a look.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2×4: Album Of The Year

Once again, all-star Retro Member Skyler “Make Me A Staff Member So I Can Post This Myself” King delivers on the goods. Struck by musical inspiration, Skyler has dared to ask the question, “What would happen if Sonic the Hedgehog 2‘s music sounded as I truly imagined it?” And that is how Sonic 2×4 was born. Listen to the Emerald Hill Zone as if it were really Splash Hill. Marvel at Metropolis like you were running from a wall that wanted to ruin you. Be thankful the flippers work properly in Casino Night. And most importantly, wonder what would go through the mind of Masato Nakamura if he ever heard this.

The Countdown Has Ended!

Tonight marks the World Premiere of Sonic 2 HD! For the first time since the project’s technical demonstration in 2008, the curtain has been pulled away to let the world see what Team S2HD has been building up. We hope this answers many of the questions long-time fans of the project have had, and that everyone is just as excited as we are for what’s to come.

For those who haven’t seen S2HD since the Tech Demo, you’ll notice that just about everything has been rebuilt from the ground up. What isn’t as obvious is that everything behind the scenes was scrapped as well: shortly after the Tech Demo’s release, the engine used was thrown away in favor of an even more accurate engine in the works–one capable of far more expansion than was originally imagined. In the year that followed the art direction also saw massive changes, and, from late spring of 2010, the finalized art style brought about the last wave of changes to everything that had been created previously. All of Sonic’s movement frames were redone. All the Badniks were scrapped and redesigned. Many of the level art assets underwent the same treatment. The result of these changes is reflected in what you now see.

By the fans, for the fans, spread the word: the alpha release of Sonic 2 HD will arrive Q1 2011!

Return To Little Planet 2: The Review

Sonic the Hedgehog fans are a patient bunch. Sometimes. Patient in the fact that they have been waiting for the redemption of the series not just in their own eyes, but in the eyes of the media at large. It’s hard to say you love something that hasn’t had a critically praised game since 1998. Hiding behind all of this has been a longing of a different sort – the yearning for a Sonic the Hedgehog movie. After all, Mario was able to receive the full big screen treatment (even if it was completely insane) at a time when Sonic the Hedgehog was just entering his biggest period of popularity. With two television series, comic books, and numerous other media, it was simply assumed that Sonic would be in a feature film. And while the west did get a “movie” (which was simply a two-episode direct to video animation from Japan stitched together), it wasn’t that high-budget extravaganza people were hoping for. And though rumors of a Sonic movie have been circulating since the Mega Drive days, as of the dawn of Sonic’s 20th anniversary celebrations, nothing has come to fruition. Thus, it was inevitable that a Sonic the Hedgehog fan film would be made. Continue Reading

ScrewAttack Talks Sonic 2 HD

ScrewAttack’s Hard News feature had a segment about the Sonic 2 HD project today. While not a whole lot was said–and, in fact, there was a lot of insistence on the project’s inevitable shutdown–it’s nice to see that the project is getting a fair amount of exposure.

With 12 days left and counting, Sonic 2 HD is bound to impress with its latest upcoming announcement. What will it be? Tune in and find out!
