Sonic the Hedgehog Film Finally Teased

For nearly as long as the franchise has existed, there have been numerous attempts to bring Sonic the Hedgehog to the silver screen. From Wonders of the World to Sonic Armageddon, a variety of produces, directors and writers have pitched their vision of the blue blur in the hopes to turn it into a full-length feature, but for whatever reason, none of them came to fruition.
In 2014, Sony Pictures announced they had secured the rights to produce a Sonic film, but after a long bout of radio silence, it seemed that this was yet another false start. But with the announcement that the project had been picked up by Paramount in 2017, everything quickly shifted into high gear. Production started, characters were cast, and filming commenced. For better or worse, the movie was finally being made.
Though lots of stories both official and not have been published in the last few months, no official imagery of the film had been released – until Monday.

Yep. That certainly does say Sonic.

First premiering on IGN, the teaser poster was given context through an interview with Sonic film producer Neal Moritz and executive producer Tim Miller. Though still holding back on plot details, the two get into the initial development of the project, including Sonic’s new visual look. To try and match the live action segments filmed earlier in the year, the lead designers have made the effort to give Sonic a realistic makeover, with beady green eyes and red sneakers that go further than even Sonic 06‘s stab at the concept.
While here at Retro we can present the image without commentary, it only takes a minute to realize that the day has already been dominated by arguments over the look. It wasn’t that long ago that Sonic Boom‘s redesign shook things up in the Sonic fandom, and that was over the color of two appendages. The many tweaks even in this shadowy image? Well…
Either way, we’ll see the full speed of a hero come November 8th, 2019 when Sonic the Hedgehog (yes his name is the full title of the movie) comes out in U.S. theaters. The film stars James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, Tika Sumpter, Adam Pally, Neal McDonough, and Ben Schwartz as Sonic the Hedgehog.
Wait, what is a whole new speed of a hero?

Personally, I think they’re veering a bit too much into uncanny valley with that design…it leaves me with very mixed feelings about this film still. But I’ll be fair and at least wait for an actual trailer before judging too harshly.
