Cure Your Dreamcast Hangover With This Look Back on Sonic Adventure’s 20th Anniversary

You might’ve heard about a certain console’s 20th Anniversary (in the United States, yes yes we know.) And like the rest of us, you might’ve busted out your own beige white box to play some of SEGA’s final games as a console company. We here at Retro have many different opinions about Sonic Adventure, but deep down, I think we all still love it in some way, shape, or forum. We’re not alone either! One of our own front page writers, MykonosFan, has put together a loving tribute about why he loves the first big, 3D outing. Give it a watch and remember, yes, the Dreamcast was always that loud.

Sonic Amateur Games Expo 2019 is finally on its way, with plenty of new games to play, streams to watch, and so much more! Given that it’s the 30th anniversary of the SEGA Genesis, SAGE’s theme is a celebration of SEGA’s most successful console and the series that started it all. This year has seen some major tweaks to the guidelines, as well as TWO logos to choose from (we know how much some folks prefer “Mega Drive” over “Genesis,) so hit the jump to check out what’s new and we’ll see you September 27th!

Retro Spotlight: SRB2Kart and the Kart Krew – Part One

Sonic Robo Blast 2 has been around for twenty long, eventful years and despite this long development, the community has thrived throughout it all. Mods of all sizes have been the backbone of the project and one of the biggest, most recent mods is none other than SRB2 Kart, which changes the game from a platformer to a kart racer, similar to the Team Sonic Racing game released last month. We had a lengthy correspondence with the team behind the mod, Kart Krew, and like their project, their answers were massive!  After working for ages to compile their answers, we’ve decided to split this particular Spotlight into three separate articles, which will be released in the following weeks. So enjoy part one of this three part series from the Kart Krew and the development of SRB2Kart!

Sonic 3 A.I.R. Full Game Released

This is a more unusual mod, but it’s one that caught our eye: Sonic 3 in 16:9 widescreen, by Eukaryot (@Eukaryot3K), who just announced the release via Twitter.

Interested in giving it a whirl? You’ll need the Steam version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles installed (hence the unusual part!), which Sonic 3 A.I.R. is built upon.

Sonic Hacking Contest 2019 Announced With a New Distribution System for Trophies

The annual Sonic Hacking Contest has once again been announced by Spanner over on the forums. This year sees many big new changes, largely with how the trophies will be categorized and distributed. With 3D entries overtaking the classic, more traditional hacks, last year, the following was decided:

Entries will be graded top 3 overall in the respective common submission formats/categories:
“Retro”, “3D” and “2D PC”. Various “general” categories, subject to different interpretation based
on submission format such as “best visually appealing” or “best sounding” will also be split in the
following manner.

There are some expected growing pains, as the announcement notes that certain trophies among the new system may not be applicable. This, of course, will depend entirely on what is submitted this year and how the voting shakes out. The contest is currently slated for December 2nd through December 8th, and you can get the deadlines for submissions, contest rules, and further details over on the forum. And as always, sonichacking.org is live for all the entries from previous years.

ToasterGrl’s LEGO Sonic Mania Pitch Appears on LEGO Ideas

Twitter user Toastergrl has put together a fantastic concept on LEGO Ideas to create a Sonic Mania themed Green Hill Zone in LEGO form. The pitch includes recreations of Sonic, along with iconic scenery including a 360 loop, slopes, monitors, Flickies and the ever important Motobug. The Phantom Ruby also makes an appearance by making clever use of flat squared surfaces positioned at a 45 degree angle. Oh, and Eggman, who can also be mounted inside the Death Egg Robot!
