Sonic Boom 2014 in New York City, Summer of Sonic Details Revealed

SU_Black6Los Angeles, San Diego, St. Louis. Next stop: Empire City itself, New York City. Sega of America’s official blog confirmed that the East Coast now gets its chance to show the West Coast what kind of Sonic fans they are (sane, we hope.) Sonic Boom 2014 will be taking place in the evening of Oct. 4 from the Grand Ballroom at the Manhattan Center. It’s safe to expect Sonic Boom (the game) to be at the event, along with a Crush 40 musical performance and a Q&A with Takashi Iizuka.
After last year’s Q&A, let’s just hope we get some better questions going so Iizuka, as entertaining as it was to watch, doesn’t go full troll mode. For example:
Fan: “Where’s Froggy?”
Iizuka: “He’s with Big.”
Fan: “…so, where’s Big?”
Iizuka: “He’s with Froggy.”
Priceless.

As for our friends over in the U.K., the news isn’t so cheery as it has been confirmed that the Summer of Sonic is stuck in winter and will not happen this year. The organizers of the fan-made event released a statement, posted in its entirety below, citing that due to the unavailability of certain key players, the event cannot be organized. However, they assure fans that the event isn’t completely over and done and may return another day.
Plan on going to Sonic Boom or planning your own Summer of Sonic in lieu of the real deal? Sound off below and get a few meet-ups going. Who knows, you may catch some of us at Retro for some barcade runs in the Big Apple.
Here’s the full release from the Summer of Sonic team:

Every year, The Summer of Sonic team dreams of new ways to excite and inspire like-minded Sonic the Hedgehog fans, with large-scale conventions that aim to bring people together under a common theme.
Due to the nature of how the annual event is organised, each Summer of Sonic event hinges on the availability of key team players, as they help build the show in their spare time – alongside SEGA personnel who also must work around their daily duties.
With this in mind, it is after a lot of consideration that we have decided to put Summer of Sonic on hiatus for 2014. During this hiatus, we will take stock of the things we have accomplished with SEGA and then decide when we will be able to return for another round of Sonic excitement.
The team would like to express our sincere thanks for the continued support of our fellow Sonic fans, as well as our apologies for any disappointment this news may cause.
Since its debut in 2008, the Summer of Sonic has been a truly pioneering event, entertaining thousands of fellow Sonic the Hedgehog fans from all corners of the world with the mantra of providing a convention by the fans, for the fans.
Its creation also marks a significant milestone in the video games industry – these past six years this small team of adoring fans have enjoyed an extremely close working partnership with the company responsible for the products and characters they grew up with and love. This close interaction between brand and community is unprecedented to this day, and shows SEGA as a company ahead of the curve when it comes to fan engagement.
As such, the team would like to thank SEGA and the Sonic Team for its support for the convention – both past, present and future.

I wish I could go to the Sonic Boom. Unfortunately I live in Poland. However, if I had the chance to meet Takashi Iizuka in person, I’d ask him the following:
    – Do you and Sonic Team know anything about the three Sonic cartoons that were made in America during the 90’s (AoStH, SatAM, Underground)?
    – Any chance we’ll ever see Mighty, Ray, Fang, Bean and Bark in the future?
    – Will there be Sonic 4: Episode III that will conclude the whole story with the Little Planet?
    – Can SEGA finally re-release Knuckles Chaotix?
    – Can Christian Whitehead make the remastered version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles?
Somebody PLEASE ask him those questions!

October 4th is the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.
I wonder if they actually checked for major conflicts before scheduling this…
