High-Res Photo of Sonic Boom Prototype Pops Up

SonicBoomprototypeleak Like the photo showing various concept art from last month, we’re not quite sure where it came from, but a photo of an early version of Sonic Boom running on a Wii U CAT-DEV dev kit has popped up online. Of course, unless the final game will miss a lot of textures and run at 15fps and, this isn’t an indication of what the final game will look like. Be sure to click the image for a larger version.
Apparently Nintendo doesn’t want photos of the Wii U dev kit flying around, so to prevent us from getting our door kicked in we’ll just show the cropped version provided by The Sonic Stadium. Nothing is stopping us from putting a link to the full image posted by Spindash.de forum member Finn here though, which also shows us that the photo was taken in January 2014. So there’s your timeframe for when this build was made.  A lower res version of the image was originally posted at AP, but has since been removed.

Still looking promising to me, but other than that, that image doesn’t really tell us all that much, does it?

This looks like it’s gonna be worse than the Werehog. Beat-em-up just doesn’t work in Sonic.

One incredibly early screenshot with a lot of stuff missing and you already think that it’s going to be worse than the Werehog? You’re certainly one who’s quick to judge…

Werehog was a poorly executed idea, If they had replaced him with Knuckles, & built the levels off of his abilities, things would’ve gone better.

I spy with my eye a DX11 in the corner. Would that refer to Direct X 11? A Microsoft product

They’re using CryEngine 3 to developer Sonic Boom, which does allow you to use DX11 graphics. Boom probably doesn’t use it though, as I don’t think that the Wii U supports DX11.

They’re probably running Play In Editor on PC in this picture.
One of the cool things about CryEngine is that you can jump into the game right from the editor in one click. However, you have to stay on the PC when doing this [too much time to compile and run on another platform], so most gameplay work is done on PC so you can save time using PIE.
Don’t work in games anymore (can’t say but I worked with id Tech 4,) but from experience not having PIE, it’s def a timesaver.

Looks like rings are going to be used as health, not too surprising.

..Well it is still a Sonic game.

Rings have never really been a “health bar” though. I’m not sure, but I think the way rings work here is that if you have one ring and get hit, you die. And there’s probably not an easy way to pick them back up either.

You’ve got a point. The type of game this is, it’ll probably have the rings function a little differently from normal Sonic games.
