Yesterday evening we learned, via the forums, that the Sonic the Hedgehog American and European box art illustrator Greg Martin had passed away in May of last year. While the news is delayed, the sadness many SEGA fans are surely feeling has not diminished. Greg Martin may not be a name fans recognize, but as soon as you see his work you’d instantly know his style. His SEGA career spanned the 90’s, with his art appearing on the covers of the SEGA Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog titles, Shining in the Darkness, Landstalker, Pac-Attack, and many more. Outside of SEGA, Greg did work for franchises including The Flintstones, Scooby-Doo, Batman, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Winnie the Pooh, The Jetsons, and Looney Tunes. You can see more of his work at his official website. Our thoughts are with Greg Martin’s family, he truly was a legend.

I love how on the “Photo Album” page of his art he got all the names right except for Pocky and Rocky, which he called “Racoon and Girl”

Other than that, I’m sorry to see him go. I really liked all the genesis covers he illustrated.

Wow, I’ve actually seen all his stuff already by chance. I mean, I’ve seen and own Scooby Doo and the Cyber Chase, I’ve watched the Jetsons, I’ve watched the Flintstones, I’ve played Pac-Man (yes, I also played Pac-Attack), I’ve obviously played Sonic 2 & Sonic 3, I’ve watched Looney Toons, I’ve watched Clifford the Big Red Dog, I’ve watched the Loony Toons, I’ve watched Winnie the Pooh (I’ve actually played many of the Winnie the Pooh video games as well), I’ve watched Aladin, Batman, and Mickey Mouse, and I’ve discovered most of these pictures during the time. The only thing I didn’t watch was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Oh well, thank you for the memories Greg, Rest in Peace.

Let me pray to his soul:
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine their lights.
    May they rest in peace.
    Amen.

2014 is going off to a really bad start with all of these deaths.

Damn it, this guy made Genesis covers the goofy, ‘tude filled cartoons they were. Now he’s gone. Another piece of the 90s died today.

Oh man, looking over his website, there’s so many stuff I recognize… This man was responsible for tons of iconic artwork that defined loads of videogames, as well as cartoons, by the looks of it. Never would have guessed that the same guy who was responsible for the cover of Sonic Chaos also did Ducktales 2, Snow Bros, and Ms. Pacman, of all things…

Even though this was not my favourite variation of Sonic’s design, these were a big part of my childhood.
I think I must’ve copied the picture of Metal Sonic from the Sonic CD cover a million times.

Greg Martin, Sonic the Hedgehog American and “European” box art illustrator, has passed away).

^I thought the European boxart used the same art from Japan

Sonic 2, Sonic Spinball, Chaotix, and Mean Bean had Greg’s artwork in Europe. Also, a majority of Greg’s Game Gear covers made their way to Europe.
