UPDATE: Taxman has confirmed on our forums that he and Stealth are the ones behind this new version. He has also said that there’ll be the usual improvements and fan service like with his updated version of Sonic CD. So you can expect some good stuff from this.
Fresh from Game Developers Conference, Sega is dropping some hot news for mobile development. Namely the appearance of the original Sonic the Hedgehog on iOS and Android devices for $2.99. No release date has been revealed at this point, however it is going to be granted additional features. Not only will there be a rock solid framerate matching the widescreen display, you’re also getting Time Attack modes and a remastered soundtrack as well. Its possible that this could be rebuilt using the Retro engine as evidenced by this tweet from Taxman himself:
There are also rumblings that Sonic 2 may also see a similar re-release. In the meantime, Sega has also announced mobile editions of Puzzle Pirates, House of the Dead: Overkill – The Lost Files and Godsrule. Puzzle Pirates is set for release within Spring of this year, while the others are To Be Decided. Be sure to check out the gallery below for a first glimpse at each of these titles.

Yes, but when are we getting Sonic 3 & Knuckles for iOS? It’s my favorite Classic Sonic game, and it seems like a huge oversight that it hasn’t been re-released yet.
Really excited about the new iOS versions, though. In its current state, Sonic 1 and 2 are both basically unplayable due to lag. So is Sonic 4: Episode 2, for that matter.
I wonder what this means for those who bought the terrible old iOS versions of Sonic 1 and 2. Would be really nice if they somehow ‘updated’ those old versions to this, especially consider how expensive they were in comparison.
The “terrible old iOS versions” will be updated to these new versions.
So if you bought them already just look forward to the update.
Will we see a release on Xbox Live and PSN?
This, please!! I would support this on consoles, even if I already have bought Sonic the Hedgehog more than 7 times and I still have 3 ports on console + PC ROMS!
What’s the difference between these and the already-available Sonic 1 and 2 for iOS?
They really just need to get Sonic 3 on there. They have Sonic 1, 2, 4:1, and 4:2 (Sonic 4 I really don’t even wanna count), so why haven’t they thrown in Sonic 3, for crying out loud?
The difference? Did you even read it?

60 FPS, Remastered music, and widescreen support is already a big plus.
But the REAL reason why I’d buy this would be for the brand new extras.
I’d really love to see the Master System exclusive levels (Jungle, Bridge, and Sky Base) included in some sort of DLC. Dang, why is it so easy to dream?
Hope it comes to consoles, loved there work on Sonic CD!
!! Could this lead to a level/”episode” creation software using the retro engine but with feature assistance/funding from Sega? The levels could be created in detail with a computer, and then, on mobile there could be a way to do it perhaps but otherwise the levels/episodes could be played on mobile and computer.
maybe it would be known as Sonic Metamorphose!
I was listening to VVVVVV music when I clicked on that image. I suddenly felt like I was god.
Hopefully this comes out for XBLA too.
Maybe this is a few steps away from a level creation software using the retro engine + everything Sega/Sonic team can offer for a good interface and implementation. 😀 All I can think of is this artwork. http://uploads3.wikipaintings.org/images/m-c-escher/metamorphosis-iii-1968.jpg
Sonic level/episode creation being opened up to people worldwide would be exceptional!
for a added bonus they should also include the “easy mode” that sonic jam had on Saturn, maybe even unlock-able spin dash, concept art, knuckles and maybe tails. build truly the ultimate official version of sonic 1 ^__^ or at least one can dream
I look forward to seeing this on Steam. Hope that the remastered music fits the game and that there’s an original option.
I hope this gets released on Wii U, XBLA, and PNS. Especially Wii U. Maybe they can do a new Mega Collection, only with the games running on the Retro engine. And they can remaster all the GameGear games too… Maybe include the Adventure games on there as well… Well, a guy can dream…
Where’s my Typing of the Dead??
Remastered sound track? Like remixes or what?
Not remixes, I’ll just quote what Taxman said on the forums:
“To clarify on the whole ‘Remastering’ thing:
The arrangements are identical to the originals, using FM synthesis. But they have been put together in a DAW environment and given an actual mix as opposed to simply recording the existing music. The Drum samples are sourced from the original synthesiser so they’re super clean and crisp too.”
sonic was one the best my childhood games. i love it.
The best game of all time
