New Episode 2 Trailer Highlights Sonic 4: Episode Metal DLC, Desert Zone

Sega’s Digital Brand Manager Ken Balough dropped by Gamespot’s On the Spot (29-minute mark) to show off another video morsel of Sonic 4‘s second episode and dropped a bit of a bombshell for those who bought Episode 1 and plan to pick up the second episode.

Available as free DLC, players will get to assume the role of Metal Sonic in Sonic 4: Episode Metal as he’s transported to the age of Sonic 4 as a throwback to Sega’s previous “Lock-On Technology” effort.  Metal Sonic can be seen briefly roaming through Splash Hill and Lost Labyrinth, which Balough goes on to state won’t be simple cut and pastes of the original levels, but are new stages exclusive to Metal Sonic in order to connect his importance, as well as Sonic CD‘s, to the Sonic 4 story.

The trailer also focuses on an oil refinery located in the middle of a shifting sand desert, featuring oil slides, sandstorms, and rising sand segments. The previously shown as concept art new-style Caterkillers are actually much bigger than their previous counterparts and can be seen diving out of the sands to take down Sonic and Tails as they attempt to cross Eggman’s ominous oilfields. Add on top of that flamethrower Orbinauts and tons of spikes and you’ve got your token penultimate level.

Sonic 4: Episode 2 will be hitting PSN on May 15 with Xbox Live getting it the following day. PC, iOS and Tegra-powered Android devices will also receive the title somewhere in the merry merry month of May. Regular Android users will have to wait for June to pick up Episode 2, while Windows Phone 7 users will need to wait until July.

They need to make Classic Sonic as DLC!!

Just saw the trailer and holy hell, this is disappointing. One ubiquity for Sonic was multiple paths, and S3&K got that perfectly. One road you can go as Sonic, another as Tails, another as Knux. Here, you’re restricted to only playing Sonic as the lead, and the game is dedicated to the cooperative methods. This is not something I plan to buy. I probably won’t even be willing to pirate it, it’s THAT bad to me.

Calm down jeez. The game didn’t even release yet and your already bitching about it? Go play 1,2,3&K if you don’t like this one.

Is this Dlc for episode 1 or 2 or its own thing?

It looks like a retroactive patch to Episode 1 that replaces Sonic’s animations with Metal Sonic, but with Balough claiming new original stages for Metal Sonic, it’s hard to say. Guess we’ll find out soon enough!

So, I need to get a PS3 and download both episodes of Sonic 4 to get Metal Sonic mode?

    TOTALLY WORTH IT.

I’m down with this. Metal Sonic Playable, soft of like lock-on tecknology? SEGA’s listening to an extent.

Oh I get it now. If you own ep1 and 2 then the dlc will be free for you to download.

I couldn’t care less about the Metal Sonic DLC (seeing as I never bought the original), but the oil refinery zone could be neat. If they don’t make it a total carbon-copy (no pun intended) of Oil Ocean Zone, it might be worthwhile.

The Metal Sonic DLC is awesome! Which also means they have the potential to fix up parts of EP1 (hopefully at least add retina display for iOS). Disappointing that you can’t play as Tails alone, or even Sonic alone, though

Episode 2 sure is shaping up to be a Day 1 buy…

There giving Metal Sonic a Episode cause of his importants to the series and to make Sonic CD more important. So why is it that there still no news on Amy she was in Sonic CD, and appeared before Metal Sonic. But still it’s nice to get to play as Metal Sonic at the very least after a long time and in his own game technically so at the very least give Amy a episode to f she’s not appearing in the main game.

Because Amy isn’t an important character at all.

    Playable Metal Sonic = Fangasm

Cannot wait to see the rest of this game. I still dislike about Sonic not staying into a ball while going up a scope like in ep1.

I’m slightly turned off by the forced co-op aspect of the Sonic & Tails gameplay, although the improvements to the flight and swimming mechanics are quite welcome. More than that I can’t rightly say right now; most of Episode II is currently “looks good, need to play it to really tell,” so I can’t make an educated statement until they release the trial version.

The Metal Sonic DLC is an awesome idea, moreso because it’s free. For me that’s especially nice, as there’s no really guarantee I’ll have the money for Episode II right away–something to tide me over until I can pay for it would be appreciated.

You need to own both games to get the Metal Sonic Episode.

Dimps A:I don’t feel like animating Eggman reviving Metal Sonic!
Dimps B:Well we can just slap a still image onto a tutorial monitor and have it shoot a particle effect to restore Metal and call it a day.
    Iizuka:*Laughs*
Dimps C:Yo why is he in the Bad Future I thought Sonic made a Good Future for Little Planet
    Iizuka:*Laughs* You’re fired!

Cool! I got EP 1 the first few weeks it came out. I have it for my Xbox 360, Wii, and iPhone. I would expect them to get Episode Metal to iPhone as well as PS3 and Xbox 360.

I’m wondering will the lock-on thingie work on steam? Like if you own both episodes on PC (Steam) will you be able to get metal sonic?

    A few things.
1: OMFG STARDUST SPEEDWAY BAD FUTURE OUTSIDE OF GENERATIONS (Don’t own CD)

2: Metal Episode only if you have BOTH eps? Ep 1 just became worth it. (PLEASE don’t tell me you have to have completed them both.)

3: EP II Looks FUCKING AMAZING! SO MUCH BETTER THAN EP I!!!!!!!!

Okay…this is actually starting to feel like a game in the spirit of the ol’ Genesis era. Not perfect of course, that’s starting to become clear, but anyone who expects total perfection from a Sonic game clearly doesn’t know the franchise.

That said, I think no matter what happens now, I’m going to enjoy Episode 2 a fair bit, and heck of a lot more than Episode 1. It’s thus far proved to have everything that I personally would want to keep me content.

The Episode Metal idea is cool, though I’m still wondering how it’s going to work out…I get you have to have both episode 1 and 2 to get it and all of that, but beyond that, I am a little befuddled how it’s going to work. And then there’s the people who have episode 1 on Wii (like me). Seeing episode 2 is being excluded from the Wii (albeit for obvious reasons) it wouldn’t really be very fair for those people to not get Episode Metal just because they didn’t have episode 1 on a console that supports Episode 2. So I’m wondering how Sega’s going to handle that.

You may ask, then, why not just obtain Episode 1 for one of the consoles that does supports Episode 2? Because for me, the only other “console” I’d have that fits that description is PC, and after seeing video of that horrendous PC port of Episode 1, I have no intention of downloading it to PC.

I suspect Sega’s got some kind of plan in mind for this kind of situation, though, I just don’t know what it might be, and if it’s a good one or not.

I would rather be able to play as Knuckles, rather than a Sonic slightly tweaked into Metal Sonic, TBH.

I got Episode 1 on the Wii , but now I own a PS3 and plan to get Episode 2 on it because I heard its not coming to the Wii. Will I still get Episode Metal? Im confused. Please reply. Thank you

You must own them on the same console. Unfortunately, Wii owners seem to be out of luck with Episode Metal.

This is a day one buy.
One issue, the 4 exclusive zones, are they new zones or new versions of the Episode 1 zones?

    • Reply

New versions of the existing Episode 1 stages. Think of them as “Act 4s”

All in all, it’s looking good so far. Still not liking the scripted co-op segments, unless of course, there are actual optional pathways to get around them….not sure how likely that is on account this seems to be their hook for this title.

I’ll be buying, but I’m just not so keen on that… although it seemed awesome a few days ago, I’m starting to think it’s almost more of the same :/
