Crush 40 Puts Up Previews of Their Upcoming Songs

Crush 40, the band that performed the theme songs for past Sonic games such as both Sonic Adventure titles and Sonic Heroes,  has put samples of three of their songs that will be on their upcoming EP. While none of the songs are tied to a new Sonic game, one of them is related to the franchise.

The first of these songs, Sonic Youth, heavily references past songs they made or remixed for the Sonic franchise such as Open Your Heart, Live and Learn, His World and Sonic Boom. The as of yet untitled EP will be available on iTunes sometime in the future. The full versions will be performed in Tokyo later this week.

Well, this isn’t quite like anything I’ve heard from Crush 40 before. I don’t really have an opinion for this song, yet.

i’m actually shocked to say that i’m not feeling it. It doesn’t have the same umph as they have had in the past. It kind of sounds like formulaic plodding to me. Its just “meh”.

Sonic Youth is great just for the unreasonable amount of references.

It’s kinda funny how the Crush 40 version of His World was the only good one. I’ll definitely have to check to check this out because this band is amazing.

‘none of the songs are tied to a new Sonic game,’

Really? I mean you wrote the article, you should at least remember what you put.

I think they have hit their peak. I actually consider Sonic and the Black knight their best overall work on a Sonic game.

    That was pretty cool.

Sonic youth for main theme/final boss theme of sonic generations, anyone agree, ps the other songs were great too

Completely agreeing with Lyriqueizmuziq. I hear Johnny’s voice in the foreground and some really weak guitar in the background with a bass that sticks out like a sore thumb that doesn’t support the sound at all. I really hope these are just WIPS of some amazing songs.

As I said elsewhere, these songs sound pretty much the same to me. It’s like he just changes the melody and the words for every song he does — he’s gotta start mixing these up IMO, I’m not feeling it anymore. I think he’s too comfortable with his cookie-cutter system.

Isn’t “Well I danced in the Shadow” a reference to Sonic Heroes, Team Dark’s (Shadow’s team) theme “This Machine” in the line, “We all danced in fire”? Another: “I am who I am” is from Shadow the Hedgehog and “With you” is from Sonic and the Black Knight.

What do these lyrics have to do with each other? What is this song supposed to mean? The crazy references are appreciated, but they don’t flow at all. Oh yeah, and isn’t Sonic Youth a band? I just don’t get the message.

@negiWDJr Don’t forget that this is samples of three songs edited together. As for the message: here’s what Jun wrote on Curhs 40’s Facebook page a while ago:

      Rise Again:
We’ve all known people who hit what I call “lows” in their life. This song is about crawling out of the dark and into the light…because just when you feel you are in the worst place in your life, there is always an opportunity to “Rise Again”

      Sonic Youth:
This song is about the dedicated Crush40 fans who believe in our music every year. We live for the music, we live for the thrill of the game….we are the “Sonic Youth”.

      One Of Those Days:
Sometimes you wake up and start the day walking into walls….everything you do is wrong! You trip on your own feet…you drop your cell phone in the toilet…no matter what you do, it keeps happening….!!! There’s only one way to fix it all and thats for the day to just end…..so when it happens to you, “write it off for one of those aw aw awful days….One of those days…..”

Real quick, I’d like to add that “Open Your Heart” is a crucial piece of my childhood.

haha nowadays everyones a critic, eh? Great song and love to see that it’s something new and different.

I think this song will make much more sense after you listen to Sabaton’s “Metal Crue” and “Metal Ripper”. Both of them are in the same vein as this song; “Metal Crue”‘s lyrics are based on metal band names, while “Metal Ripper” is based on metal song titles. Neither of them are supposed to make much sense; they really are just for the references.

I’m actually liking it, but I agree Crush 40 were better in the Adventrue days and up till Black Knight!

Outside Live and Learn and Open Your Heart, they kinda lost their luster with me. In any case, I find level music is far more interesting, as it should be.

I wouldn’t bother approaching Crush 40’s none game work and expect it to sound the same. This is pretty much in the same style as all their album work. Their none-game music has never really been quite as over the top or in your face.

Trust me. If they were making the songs for a game it likely would sound more like the stuff you’re more familiar with.
