More Sonic 4: Episode 2 Shots, Straight From The Source

It was only a couple days ago when we finally got our first glimpse at Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2. Sure, maybe we weren’t supposed to see it yet, but that doesn’t really matter anymore. Especially since Sega’s official blog has decided to do their own public reveal of the game, with screenshots aplenty. We may not know if their original plans for letting out all this information has changed because of the Xbox Live showing, but either way we finally get a better look at what is to constitute Sonic’s latest romp in 2D.

We get some more quick looks at the Aquatic Garden hybrid level, as well as seeing the full extent of the snow-covered wonderland. If the snow and the carnival are indeed the same act, the screenshots promise at least variety in the scenery, with the white flakes of snow being a not-so-distant memory as Sonic is forced to go through the park’s rollercoaster. Wonder if we’ll have to jump into any of the carts…but I digress.

Though at the moment the entire Sega blog is down (presumably from the amount of traffic they incurred finally unveiling the new and hopefully improved Sonic 4), the description did promise that we’ll finally be seeing gameplay footage this month, Gamespot being the first to unveil the trailer come the 23rd.

Check out the gallery below, which not only has some of the new concept-art badniks in their rendered state, but also a couple more new enemies that have yet to be named. Also included is some of the background art of the Japanese Sonic 4 site, ripped by the Sonic Scene and uploaded by the Sonic Stadium, giving us a better look at the background to the still unnamed zone.

Guess they’re sticking with the giant rings at the end of acts.

    I like Sonic’s run.

Not bad at all. Looking forward to that gameplay trailer.

Jesus, what’s up with Tails in that last picture? His Tail is completely detached from his body… If they’re trying to hybrid Tails’s Sonic 2 jump with the new animation, they’re doing it wrong.

Still, I’m quite looking forward to this.

Nice! (That’s all I can say for now, until the trailer comes out.)

After seeing these images I see why Sega did not want to put it on Wii but hopefully they port this to the Wii U when it is released. Cannot wait for the trailer.

i certainly hope people who baught Episode 1 get bonu content of some kind for Episode 2, or better yet if you collected all the chaos emeralds in Episode 1 you have them from the start in Episode 2, yea that would kill the challaneg but if Sonic 4 is just one game with multiple episodes to come out for it then you might as well be able to keep the chaos emeralds you collected in episode 1

Looking awesome!!! By the looks of it that will be four brilliant games in a row for the hedgehog!

I’m really, really not trying to troll Streak up there, but I actually came down here to hate on those exact 2 things, and to applaud the water-running and the forest-type world design. If the ends of the stages make you stop or run out of the screen, it’s going to be problematic. Also, Sonics’ running animation is muddled by that paper-y thingy.

So far,i’m excited from the pictures 🙂 lets wait for the trailer…come on sega, keep up the good work & make the blue blur strong again!

SWEET! And the 23rd is next Thursday! This look like we actually will be seeing this in May!! Oh and Water Running is back! Good call, SEGA.

Looking Good! I can’t wait for it.
I hope they make a PC Verison of Episode II when it’s released.

All signs point to yes that a PC version is coming.

God, i hope its for ACTUAL game systems, not for iphone and virtual console. It doesn’t look cheaply done with 2d ground and 3d sonic. That sucked. I also like the running a lot. This game looks insanely better than ep. 1.

So many potential things to complain about as reading the comments is making apparent, so I will try to stay original. One thing I was hoping for from Sonic CD was the unique camera that allowed the player to see more ahead of them once at top speed which would allow for more obstacles and even higher speeds without any sense of cheapness. Beside the roller coaster every one of the screenshots has Sonic in the middle; I mean if Sega wants players to throw away the old complaint of some cheap deaths here and there from a game meant to be played fast, this is something that should be implemented. Another problem to me at least is the special stages as I was hoping for something more Sonic CD over Sonic 2. It would especially be interesting if say Tails could use his special 69 moves or whatever to help with said special stages (perhaps it would add something new to the rather tired formula from Sonic 2 if that is what I have to play). This game looks like it would match Donkey Kong Country Returns in terms of visuals, so I have no real complaints other than the ones just mentioned besides the not-so-original complaint of his paper feet.

Is DIMPS doing it again or is Sega doing it this time?

Hell yes. This better come out for PC, as my XBOX is a little old and rusty…

The levels feel sort of bland, despite their prettiness. I know that almost doesn’t make sense, but it does. They’re nicely rendered but a bit meh. That’s just my 2, though. Still, I’m looking forward to this. Fixed engine, better sonic animations, Metal Sonic, hey. I’m more than willing to give it a shot.

Sadly Sonic 4 ep. 1 ruined it for me. It felt more than a HD remake of some Sonic 1,2 stages than a sequel. I can’t really count Sonic 4 as part of the classics… looks okay though.

Please SEGA fix the physics and don’t screw up the music Jun Senoue.

I just imagined this game with classic physics. Oh that looked sexy. Pleeease play like the classics.

Looks more 2.5 D to me. And who TH put a carnival in a snowy wasteland? The oil one looked cool but revolting. The clouds weirded me.

Haven’t heard from Aquatic Ruin Zone in a few years or so.

And you consider X360 or PS3 a real game system? They are just as bad as a Wii when stacked up to a PC.

This, being the new Sonic 4 standard, should come with a complimentary update of Episode 1 to match the current one.

    This looks great, really promising.

Sega better not just leave episode 1 alone when this is released. im expecting some sort of lock on feature which gives me the opportunity to start episode 1 with tails, not to mention sega would be able to deal with the shoddy physics, putting to rest Sonic 4’s bad reputation.

This should be less of a feature for Sega and more of circuital asset.

I have a bad feeling about the physics. That screenshot of Sonic jumping over the yellow badnik and having a blue trail is the one. That jump arc doesn’t look possible in the classic physics.

Either it’s Just Me, Or That Looks Like A Reference To Aquatic Ruin From Sonic 2.

I think Episode 2 locks on to episode 1… The guy with the weird Tails mustash said “Not only will Sonic 4 episode 2 fix many of the physic problems, but it will also fix the problems from the first episode…” so that what told me it would

aw, i was hoping for more than just four zones, i mean come on sega, the genesis is outrunning you on stages! there neeeds to be an update for more stages or dlc, or at least something!

i hope they do a remake on the first episode. it’ll feel weird playing the bad ep.1 then go to this beautiful ep.2 wonder if ep.3 will be as good. that’s only if they plan on making it

Here’s my analysis of some of the less obvious things you can see from the screens.
I originally was just gonna say the carnival and snow levels have the same background, but I kept seeing new things, so that’s why its a bit disorganized. Either way I think it worked out well, I’m not sure how much of this stuff is known. I know the Little Planet / Death Egg connection is, but I think most other stuff hasn’t been discussed here (probably in the forums though, I’m not trying to claim credit for anything here).

There’s no way this is getting a Wii release. Not with those gorgeous graphics.

I like what I’m seeing. My hopes for this game have just risen even higher.

It looks beautiful, but anyone can show off. The gameplay footage should reveal whether these screenshots were actually something to get excited about.

What I really want to see again is a Sonic game that’s as good as a Mario game because Sonic and Mario were once peers and equals, but now Sonic eats Mario’s dust for breakfast every day. Sonic 4 Episode 1 should have been about as good as the comparatively basic New Super Mario Bros. games, but completely failed to reach that mark, and having Episode 2 announced by a guy with a Tails mustache reeked of empty showmanship, so it’s impossible for me to get excited yet. I wanna see substance, not more promises waiting to be broken.

God… seeing people cream their undies over these screengrabs is like seeing people orgasm over movie trailers… we will see soon enough if the game is worth the excitement. As with last time, I’ll snag the demo first and THEN pass judgment later… the shots DO look nice though, no doubt about that. Hey, if nothing else, at least it doesn’t look like a carbon copy of Sonics 1-3.
