Sonic Advance Heads to Android in Japan

Ports of Sonic games to mobile devices  have been nothing new or notable for a while now–after all, we’ve seen both Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 ported to everything ever, as well as mobile versions of games like Sonic Unleashed and Sonic at the Olympic Games appearing for phones alongside their console counterparts.

But in a move unseen since Sonic N (rest in peace, taco phone), the classic game Sonic Advance (aka the Advance series game that was actually pretty great) is now available on the Japanese Android Marketplace. For free. How awesome is that?

The game is slightly different than the original Game Boy Advance release: when the 3x scaling is calculated back down to the game’s original size, the screen resolution comes out to be 264×158 instead of 240×160. Rather than the GBA’s chiptunes, the original MIDI compositions are being used in this port, which is unsurprising but still pleasant.

If you live outside of Japan and still want to play the game, we have a rip of the APK available for download.Note that you will need to know how to root and modify your Android device (which we can’t help you with, sorry 😉 ) and that you’ll need to set your provider id to docomo. Here’s hoping it gets a proper release in the western Android Marketplace for everyone else!

Hopefully it does come to the other countries. I would get it, even if it is paid.

I had it on an emulator already, played it all the time, but now I have an iPhone

You don’t need to root your Android to install APK files. If you go the “Applications” in the settings and check “Unknown Sources”, you can install it with most file browsing apps.

I downloaded it from the Android Market, but when I’m opening the game I have the following error 🙁

    アプリが最新のバージョンではありません。。 Androidマーケットでアプリをバージョンアップしてく ださい。

Why does the link to the apk just link to a zip of the MIDIs?

Would to see it run on my phone but the mediafire link is just the midi music not the game

All the Sonic 1 music from the original has been replaced with Sonic 4 music.

    In before Nakamura Conspiracy theorists.

That’s the second forgotten classic that Sega have shed some light on~ All I need now is this on Ipod touch in the UK and a Knuckles Chaotix remake…also what’s this about Sonic 4 music? Anything but splash hill act 1 again

Anyone who wants to play this game, rooted or not, you cannot. The APK file is just full of MIDI files, so don’t do it until Scarred Sun fixes it.

Got it to download and stuff (only mobage version would work for me)

Had to blindly make a mobage account and then after all that… the game is only a trial…
And it doesnt run all too well on my LG Optimus V (custom 7.2 cm7 rom)

The Enrichment Center would like to remind you that Android Hell is a real place where you will be sent at the first sign of defiance.

I have several Sonic games on emulators on my Android phone and I’m not a big fan of touchscreen controls in action games. It’s fine for RPGs, but anything as fast-paced as Sonic I just can’t do; I need physical buttons. It’s a little better with my slideout keyboard, but still a lot harder than playing on the original GBA (or the N-Gage if you’re one of those people).
Still, I’d probably download it if it was free in the US.
