NYCC 11: Sonic Generations 3DS Has Modern Mushroom Hill Mix, Rumored Delay

Since our last look at the Nintendo 3DS version at the Tokyo Game Show in September, one of the concerns was if Modern Sonic’s Mushroom Hill Zone was going to get a proper remix instead of a straight recycle of the original stage music. The build shown at New York City Comic Con over the weekend can now dismiss those fears. Sounds a bit like the FM Synth version of the song from Sonic and Knuckles Collection on the PC with a rock guitar backing, because that’s how Modern Sonic rolls… or boosts.

The video, provided by Nintendo World Report, also includes more looks at Classic Mushroom Hill, Green Hill Zone, and the Big Arm boss battle from Sonic 3. With Classic Sonic’s Mushroom Hill, anyone feel the last checkpoint in the stage is kind of useless without the Lumberjack mid boss?

However, not all is good news for the 3DS version. Games Radar is reporting that the 3DS version may need to slow down, being apparently pushed back into early next year instead of releasing alongside its PS3/360/PC big brother. It’s unknown if the delay is actually due to polishing up the 3DS version more or to see how Nintendo’s handheld fairs with consumers this Holiday season.

We’ll keep you posted as more on the 3DS version comes in. Thanks to commenter Aerobian-Angel for the tip on the video!

You guys were concerned Modern Sonic wouldn’t get a proper remix for MHZ? Even AFTER hearing Big Arm’s remix? Shame on you guys…

Well, there was never a doubt, but there were indeed people concerned about it.

It would definitely make sense for it to get delayed, given how unfinished it looks.

They probably also need the time to make sure they got all the upgrades right for both Sonics (i.e. Homing Attack for Classic Sonic…which one person decided to go RAAAHHH because they saw a SECOND of Classic Sonic with the target marker)

    ….Next…*gulp* next..yeaaarrr?
Goddamn it…I bought my 3DS in May and I still haven’t bought a 3DS game for it…and now I’ll have to wait longer?

But no…I hope the latest it will be pushed back is December…cmon its the 20th, you can’t give it out next year!  Then again, if its late, or crap like 06′, take your time.  But I doubt it’s 06′ crappiness.

Sega confirmed today that the 3DS version will be released in Europe on November 25.

The delay rumor must be false.

Yea I heard, but I live in Canada so who knows since they only said Europe.

Hey Retro! mind getting the modern remix of mushroom hill, like you did with Big Arm and classic mushroom hill?

Doesn’t strike me as making a huge amount of sense putting a game on hold just to assess the market conditions.

I imagine it’s a case of the 3DS hardware being awkward to work with. When the 3DS version of this game was first shown, it was in a lousy state, with missing backgrounds, recycled music and various gameplay problems. They seem to be taking a very long time to fix these issues.

The costs are too great to out-right cancel the game, but they do appear to be struggling. I’m not at all surprised there’s talk of a delay. It’s not outside the realms of possibility that production will be copied over to the PS Vita too.

The 3DS has been on shaky grounds with developers. They’re not sure about it being a viable platform to develop on, as we’ve seen with several delays and cancellations of projects on there.

Mind you, it’s also true that devs got 3DS devkits very late.

From what I’ve seen, the cancelation stories tend to apply to games in the early stages of development. This one’s well beyond that milestone – we’ve had videos, hands-on demos, screenshots, websites – all sorts. To pull the plug now wouldn’t make good business sense. To purposely avoid the holiday season where they’re most likely to make a good return makes even less sense.

The 3DS’ troubles may mean no future Sonic games are released for the platform (unless this becomes a million-seller) but I think we’re past the point of no return here. That is, unless, development’s shifted over to another platform.

Hell, even if they stop making 3DSes tomorrow I would expect this game to live on in the form of a PS Vita port. Maybe even to iOS/Android. It’s not like Sonic X-Treme where the developers don’t know what they’re making – there’s a plan here, it’s just they’re running a bit behind schedule for whatever reason.

Applies not only to the classic remix, also to the modern.

It makes sense that the game would be delayed, if only for the reason that it was only when they announced the game (or around that time) that they decided on actually DOING a 3DS version. (Maybe not, though – someone correct me on this if possible!)

If I’m not mistaken, the game concepts were built before 2011, but the ultimate development began on 2011?
‘Cause I still feel that both games were given quite a short time. And that together with the London Games?
If it wasn’t for the videos and everything else, I wouldn’t be so hyped.

IIRC, the PS3/360 version has been in development since Unleashed came out.
