Rumor: First Glimpse at Generations Final Boss?

Let’s start by raising the major spoiler flags. Unless you don’t care at all about the plot or seeing how the final boss of the game looks like or is named, turn back right now. Everyone else, let’s press on.

The Japanese Sonic site updated yesterday with a slew of new content, primarily with new images from the 3DS version of the game, a few from the console version, and some character bios. However, thanks to some sleuthing and confirmation from Sonic Stadium member Solofiveo, changing numbers in the image file names bring up this little image.

Hard to say what it can be, since it looks like a monster of the week.

Of note, when changing character image numbers, this particular one being found at “sonic.sega.jp/SonicGenerations/blue/character/css/contsnts-character/slide_04.png”, you get the following:

01. Sonic, 02. Tails, 03. Eggman, 04. Time Eater, and 05. Metal Sonic. Two more slots, currently 404ing, exist afterward, belonging to Shadow and Silver respectively.

While both Sonic and Tails feature their classic and modern forms together, Dr. Eggman is by himself with no sign of a Classic Eggman render.

Could be Eggman Nega. Or not. Or maybe the Eggman from Sonic CD got all of the Time Stones and something something something. Just in time for Sonic CD rerelease.

    • Reply

Yeah, I thought about something like that. The time twisting being product of both Eggman trying to mess the time and space in the present and Classic Eggman\Robotnik managing to mess the time and space in Sonic CD.

This kind of shit is even happening in the Archie comics at the moment. I smell conspiracy. :U

No offense, but it looks less like Eggman and more a generic eyes-and-mouth-in-flame/gas/whatever to me. Adding lines and curves in MSPaint is all well and good, but as Pikachu in a Sombrero showed it’s not always the same lines that appear in the final thing. šŸ˜›

    • Reply

Like I said, it’s baseless conjecture. But I will happily accept Pikachu in a sombrero for a final boss!

      • Reply

So.. erm.. why make an article on baseless conjecture? :S Are we back on Area51 or something?

Seriously, while the icon itself is front page news, the rest really isnā€™t. Iā€™d expect it in the forum thread, sure, but not on the very front page of Retro.

To both you and Jack, please remember that not everyone that posts on the front page has an account on the site. They’re just as entitled to discuss it. Yes, you’re both right that this is the most egregious pushing of opinion I’ve done outside of the usual shots at the series and if you don’t like it, then my apologies.
I put it up as a way to foster discussion because, as it’s fact, there’s plenty of mystery around this Time Eater, especially after Sega yanked the image offline almost immediately after the image was found and this ran. Yes, my speculation is baseless, but so is every other bit a person can offer right now because there’s only two facts:
          1) It’s a big bad and likely final boss.
          1a) It’s evil.
          2) It’s a monster-of-the-week.
Just let people have a little fun with it before more is revealed and we all groan from how silly the whole premise of a Time Eater (that is not Lavos) is.

        • Reply

It would’ve ended up fostering discussion without the little Eggman lines, though. If you want to go down that route, the only Eggman/Robotnik it really looks like is the SatAM one, and we all know that’s never going to happen.

The information on just what we have – the icon, the order, the missing Classic Eggman – would’ve been plenty for a front page post to generate discussion in the comments.

I don’t see how this is letting people “have a little fun” either, if others wanted to entertain ideas like this then they would be anyway. It’s something for the forums, or the comments, but not for the actual news post on the front page of Retro.

You know, we haven’t actually SEEN what happens if Eggman himself consumes the 7 chaos emeralds. He’s never actually gathered them altogether, and the closest he’s come was Chaos 6. So what would he use them for? A hugeass machine, a new monster that will only overthrow him, or…ultimate power? He’s smart enough to pull a Lex Luthor and build something that will forcefully pump himself with raw Chaos energy. Could this be it?

    • Reply

haven’t you played Sonic 1? if you beat the game without gathering any emerald Eggman will appear playing with the 6 emeralds šŸ˜‰

      • Reply

        That’s 6, not seven. šŸ˜›

      • Reply

Yeah, 6 chaos emeralds in Sonic 1, not 7. That’s the difference. The 6 on their own have power, but not enough to give the user unlimited. That’s a big difference.

      • Reply

That doesn’t count as all the Emeralds, beause in every Sonic game after it, there were 7 instead of 6. And that’s more of a taunting thing to spite you into getting the emeralds, so you don’t have to see Robotnik’s smug face anymore.

    • Reply

Thats going into “Eggman Hates Furries” territory.

    • Reply

That would actually be very epic if Sega managed to do that. I’ve always wondered what would happen if Eggman got all of the Chaos Emeralds and used them on himself.

Ya know, aside from turning him into BREAKDANCING EGGMAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!

Doesn’t really spoil too much. I really want to believe it to be Eggman, buit to me, it remainds me of Violet Wisp.

Holy shit! That thing looks like a roid up version of the void power-up.Ā

  • Reply

Well we needed another villain besides Eggman and that’s a fact,

the final boss reminds me of the Anti Monitor from DC Comic’s Crisis On Infinite Earth’s that mini series issue was epic.

  • Reply

it looks to me more or less Mephiles the Dark, I mean he can change his shape as he wants, and it makes perfect sense for him to conflict with time and space, also the fact he’s dark!

    • Reply

I would love for this to be true. I’ve been long hoping the “time eater” is Mephiles somehow back to wreak havoc, which IMO would be totally awesome, as Mephiles was an awesome, not to mention deadly, villain.

Unfortunately, I just don’t find it likely. Too many people associate Mephiles with Sonic ’06, and too many would rather just forget that even happened and ignore it. It’s the same issue Silver occasionally faces (but thankfully Sega has made it clear that won’t stop them from using Silver again).

Pity though. I personally think no better villain to have for the 20th anniversary game would be Sonic’s deadliest to date. Furthermore, he appeared in the last anniversary game, so even though it wasn’t a good game, there is a certain amount of logic to have him again in the next anniversary game.

      Just sayin’.

      • Reply

I see your point about Mephiles being associated with Sonic 2006, but I don’t think either Silver, Mephiles or even Iblis should be affected with that, I can see Elise being neglected because of the game “though she might appear in Sonic Generations out of nowhere, I mean you never know ;)” but I don’t think Mephiles should be forgotten altogether because of Sonic ’06 especially that the game didn’t tell whatever happened to him after they put out Iblis’ flame!

        • Reply

Technically, the “flame” they blew out was Solaris (aka both Iblis and Mephiles combined) as that was before the two got separated.

But since when has Sega ever cared about continuity? šŸ˜›

And anyway, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if it takes a whole lot more than merely blowing out a flame to beat both Iblis and Mephiles.

I think the odds of Elise appearing are even less likely, but at the same time, I wouldn’t put it past Sega to have her cameo (even if briefly).

I bet you the Time Eater is just another hedgehog. Here’s my theory. Ever since Sonic Adventure 2, there has been a new hedgehog every 5 years (Shadow, Silver, you know) I bet Classic Sonic or this thing is going to be the next hedgehog. Unless…… !!

This of course, is that “mysterious force thingy” that sends Sonic back in time. Why? I dunno, sending Sonic to the past is going to make him stronger, with the help of Epic Sonic (er.. classic Sonic, whatever) It looks scary, but It must lack on brains šŸ˜›

Really, what’s wrong with Silver in of himself? Yes, Silver has sort of slow and awkward gameplay, but he’s not the first character to do so. In fact, Sonic Rivals has him play much faster and less awkward. Don’t bash a character just because the first game he appeared in turned out to be terrible – especially when there is no relation whatsoever between the two.

    • Reply

1.) He’s been confirmed to be one of the “Rival Bosses”
2.) Silver himself is awesome. His debut game isn’t, but Silver himself is

When I first saw this at Stadium I couldn’t believe it. I was like “that’s Time Eater?!” Than I realized that this picture doesn’t show Time Eaters full figure so its all good. I didn’t see it when everyone kept saying he looks like Classic Eggman but after seeing that MS paint hop now I see it. If Time Eater is Classic Eggman mutanted by the Chaos Emeralds (which mind you if the classic and modern Chaos Emeralds street counted separately we’ll have 14 Emeralds here people!) Or mutanted due to Mephies or something else I would scream like a little school girl in joy! That would be sweet!!! If its the monster from Sonic 1’s Mario rip off story than sweet. Heck even if its just another Dark Gaia but with time powers I would still say sweet!!! Also where is Classic Knuckles??? Nobody respects the Knux… By the way where does the Master Emerald play in this? Will their be a past and present Master Emerald? I must know!!!

  • Reply

Don’t think too deeply into it, it’s just a random monster that eats time. You guys go more in depth with this stuff than Sega do~

    • Reply

Because we are nerds, lol that’s why we go so in-depth when it concerns Sonic video games lol.

I can see how people think it’s similar to the strange monster at the back (http://www.eggmanempire.sonicworld.net/concept.jpg) but if you open the image up in paint o something, you can see part of it’s shoulder (I think) and it looks similar to that creature’s one in the image… Also the strange purple gas-like substance may well be it’s hands too like in the image….

Hey guys, canf for the life of me find the video on the desktop YouTube site but I was on facebook on my iPod and checked out a sonic generations fan page, well it had a link to a “Sonic Generations 3DS TGS 2011 Trailer” video (which obviously went to YouTube mobile) and it showed both Sonics in Green Hill and Mushroom Hill, but here’s the odd parts. Early in the video when Classic Sonic runs up a ramp and into the air, the enemies have the homing attack target on them.

    • Reply

Yeah, I’m actually putting that up right now. Thing is, based on Sega’s comments (you’ll see what I mean in the article, so no, this isn’t baseless), the 3DS version might be getting a little more time in the oven. It certainly looks a bit unpolished still.

Removed the ultra opinion-y part. I realized I got a little too trigger happy and jumped the gun on that one. I’ve kept the information that is relevant and important to people, including the now-deleted-from-the-Sonic-Japan-site image of the Time Eater. My apologies.

It’d be awesome if the Time Eater was a strain of Mephiles, as he is “the Dark” and most evil character in the series (including the only one to successfully kill Sonic).
