[UPDATED] Gamescom 2011: Mushroom Hill, Big Arm 3DS Gameplay and Audio

UPDATE: We also got video of the Big Arm boss included in the demo, now updated after plenty of negative feedback from E3 concerning one aspect of it. Want to see? Hit the jump! Thanks to commenter MarioSonic for the tip off!

By way of YouTube channel NiNTENDOMiNATi0N, take a look at Modern Sonic running through the browning foliage of Mushroom Hill Zone Act 2 including a clear listen to the level’s music.

At least, I would hope that’s a placeholder song while a final one is still being worked on. A straight port of the Genesis Mushroom Hill Zone Act 1 tune? Has to be. The footage also shows some oddities in the gameplay including familiar DIMPS problems of odd object placement, pitfalls, and moonwalking on the roof.

But on the plus side, listen to that Act 1 remix toward the end of the video. That remix is simply goodness.

No, your ears are not mistaken, that’s indeed the final boss theme for Sonic 3/Vs. Mecha Sonic and Giant Robotnik Mech in S3K. Good to hear that back in place. Thanks to NintendoWorldReport for the video.

This game makes no sense. No, really… NO SENSE.

But it’s nice to see Mushroom Hill with beautifull graphics. But i just… i would rather see a whole modern Sonic game through genesis/master system stages. The classic ones are almost a 1:1 thing with better graphics…. the only twist this game has is the modern gameplay.

    BAAAD Sega. No buy.

You do realize the classic Sonic stages are SUPPOSED to be remakes, right? They’re making sure which Sonic gameplay style people like better. They didn’t attempt to change the classic Sonic level design more than slightly, because they simply don’t know how to do that without making it shittier.

        *ahem* Dash Rings.

    • Reply

Juat because the graphics are in blocky 3D now don’t make them better~ Atleast Classic Sonic will have some original levels in the modern era, but the console version,s getting so much more work put into it it’s saddening.

      • Reply

Even if the console versions are getting so much more attention…as least the music is pretty bad ass.

        • Reply

oh I completely agree~ I posted that before the update. dimps may suck at levels but when it comes to music and bosses they’re the shite

        • Reply

@The BlueBadger – Dimps didnt make the music. Sonic Generations Sound Team is making the music, but Alex from CashCash remixed Classic City Escape, and Big Arm Boss Battle. Dont give Dimps any credit for music, because Dimps is responsible for the gameplay.

        • Reply

to Ricardo, well if ya say so. But I still have to hand it to Dimps for the boss fights.

    • Reply

JUST because it has Modern gameplay? Dude, the whole idea is that Modern Sonic meets the classic version of himself, and they’re trying to stop the evil force that started the whole fiasco in the first place. So, Sega is remaking older and newer levels from the old and NEW games completely to give the game a whole new feel, rather than just having Modern Sonic running through Classic zones, or Classic Sonic running through Modern Zones. If you disagree with Sonic Generations being a great turn for the Sonic franchise, then YOU sir, can go crawl back into the hole you were born in and die.

Classic Sonic gets a remix while Modern doesn’t?

    Dimps is retarded

    • Reply

      Amen!

    • Reply

I’m pretty sure it’s a placeholder. Quite sure in fact. Well, maybe not 100 percent sure, cuz you know, Dimps IS known for doing retarded stuff and whatnot, but I’m quite certain that’s placeholder music. Probably.

      • Reply

It is 98% a placeholder. Seeing that they replaced the Big Arms boss music with the correct version, they will most probably replace it.

        • Reply

Still a little bit interesting the game is considered 70% done while the music is still in production. But, I’m not going to pretend to know how the game development process works and just look forward to going through both versions in a couple of months.

    • Reply

It’s a placeholder for later – Modern hasn’t had a remix yet, if we’re on the right track.

  • Reply

Of course the gameplay is fucked. Walking on top of the ceiling?

Sega, DIMPS has failed Sonic. Get someone else.

    • Reply

Have you played Sonic & Knuckles recently?  You can actually do that fairly easily in the original game, and was quite glad to see that back, physics glitch or not.

    • Reply

You only say this now? Could you have not said this in 2005 (or even earlier)?

      • Reply

Although to be fair, Advanced 1 and maybe Colors DS were pretty good

        • Reply

I really liked the demo of Colours DS (I only ever PLAYED the demo, I don’t have the actual game but I’ve played a lot of my friend’s Sonic Rush Adventure)

Seriously? Not that I hate the tune, but… really? It couldn’t have been given a cool modern mix? I swear, that better change by the final release. I’m up for the gameplay, but music hits it hard for me. If the 3DS version ends up failing to meet my musical standards (if it’s a simple copy/paste for one version and just ONE remix of the other) I regret to say I won’t get this title.

Honestly, it’s insulting to me as a gamer and a musician.

    • Reply

That’s more or less how the console version has been (for the Genesis levels, at least). You can’t really call the classic tracks “remixes” just because they’re slightly altered – half the time they just sound like straight rips of the original tracks.

    • Reply

I’m a Sonic fan, but this is REALLY picking this crap apart, especially since it’s just a beta demo.  You seriously will not buy a whole title just because they didn’t change the classic music enough on a classic stage? Wow.

      • Reply

No, I meant on the modern take.
Besides, after seeing the Big Arm fight redone, I’m convinced it’s only temporary placement, so please back off.

  • Reply

Hope fully they have some sort of jazzy remix (the orignal sounds kind of like jazz) for modern.

  • Reply

It does look rather gorgeous and again, Dimps better not fuck this up, but that Act 1 music is just screaming for a Generations console HD version! I just hope this game is good if it’s not the case where the handheld version gets higher reviews than the console version. Yeah, Sonic Colors, anybody?!

    • Reply

or Unleashed where Wii/PS2 version got higher reviews than 360/PS3 version!

      • Reply

Exactly. Then again, I think the only reason the Wii/PS2 version got higher reviews was the lack of a hub and shorter Werehog stages. Course, I wish the Wii version got more of what the 360/PS3 dudes and dudettes got.

        • Reply

I personally think the Wii version controlled better as well. For some reason the PS3 version was very slippery and hard to keep in control

    1.modern is placeholder,
    2. Game will be improved(hopefully)
    3. Where the hell is the MP3 for this?

    • Reply

      Try getting YouTube to MP3.

  • Reply

Modern will get a remix and i WANT AN MP3!!!

    • Reply

Also why does the guy playing never use the boost or spin dash and how did they not see the ceiling walking thing? Cmon dimps think sonic rush not sonic 4! And not next gen either!

      • Reply

The guy playing wasn’t the best, but again, the ceiling walking WAS in the original game.  This looks FAR from Sonic 4 IMO.

    • Reply

And -I- want someone to come along and pay all of my student loans off, but it looks like neither of us are getting what we want..!

Drop the sense of entitlement, kid

      • Reply

Stop harping on the guy will ya? I have the mp3 for this and I know this guy, I’m giving him the MP3 so HA in ur FACE

  • Reply

There are some seriously wrong stuff going on with the act 2 level design, graphically, act 2 looks good. but act 1’s colors are too dull in comparison to the original’s.

the fudge is up with the mushroom colors?? i know it’s a little nit picky to pick on the mushrooms but the yellow replacing the red mushrooms are just… meh

  • Reply

DURR WHAT IS THE BOOST BUTTON?? Anyway, I hope Modern Sonic will get a Act 2 remix. But still it wouldn’t bother me. The gameplay looks better than Green Hill, but it could always be improved. Also, this video shows the difference between Dimps and Sonic Team. ST knows level design. Better, at least.

    • Reply

Seriously. I spent the whole video going OMG USE THE F***ING BOOST BUTTON!
      I realise he’s trying to show people what it looks like but even at the end I was bashing my head on the desk trying to watch him slowly walk up a loop >_<;;

Side note – I'm only buying a 3ds for this game so waiting to see if a 'sonic' 3ds is going to be released as special edition or sumit.

      • Reply

At the end? Uh, that wasn’t Modern Sonic at the end of Act 1, unless i’m missing something…

  • Reply

This is why I’m not too bothered by not having a 3DS. Compared to the console version, this is disappointing at best, especially Modern Sonic’s gameplay.

A miracle has happened! Big Arm music changed to real one.

Neat. Let me add that to the post. Thanks!

actally, i really don’t have much of any complaints so far. as long as this gameplay is really good then it shows me that they’re heading in the right direction.

i didn’t really pay too much attention to the mushroom’s graphics but all in all it looks great to me. and as for the colors in the zone, i remember mushroom hill color changing from a lively green to fall to a dull dead color. so i guess that’s about right.

and as far as running on the ceiling goes. sonic was always able to run on the ceiling so that’s basically normal, im not too sure about walking on the ceiling. but yeah running a curve up to a ceiling was normal (if the platform was set that way)

i seriously didn’t expect these kind of criticism’s about the game, so no one’s having any questions about how tight the gameplay is?

Peppy: USE THE BOOST TO GET THROUGH! (<)

I dunno weather act 2 is just bad by design or the guy is that bad.

    • Reply

number 2 the guy is a bad player

      • Reply

        BZZT!
        Wrong!
Look at the level as it goes by.
The man is not the best player, but there are some truly terrible level design decisions in it! The spring up a vertical wall leading to spikes at the top is particularly egregious.

        • Reply

so both answers were right 🙂

Anybody else bugged by the fact that Sonic looks like he’s running on loads of giant blocks? in 2D that worked but here it looks silly. Doesn’t really feel like you’re going through a forest. Segs should have like…merged the foreground with the background rather than just have it a solid block.

  • Reply

And also the ring loss physics.

    • Reply

To be honest, I actually like that. It actually adds incentive to not getting a hit a lot, which is a much-needed difficulty edge Sonic needed.

  • Reply

I lol’d at the odd cartoon sound effects.

  • Reply

that big arm remix is now one of my favorite sonic tune remixes ever!!

  • Reply

Mushroom hill stage is like a big middle finger to that guy who made a CGI Sonic&K video.

    • Reply

I like to think of it more as Sonic Team saw the video and said, “Challenge accepted.” …then pushed it off to DIMPS.

    • Reply

Although the sad fact is that video is STILL better 🙁

      • Reply

Considering how this is in the 3ds (which doesn’t even compare to the consoles) it looks really good for the console (and actually on-screen of the 3ds and 3d on would look better and better) so just imagin how it would’ve looked in consoles.

  • Reply

The sound effect of the wall mushroom falling kind of sounds gross IMO. Other than that, it looks good

  • Reply

I don’t know why everyone seems to like the Big Arm remix so much. Meh. Maybe i’ll aprecitae it more once I get the GODDAMN Modern Escape the City Remix.

  • Reply

My heart skipped a beat when I heard that boss music. I mean, wow. If the nitpicks still don’t get fixed, then I’d still get the 3DS version just to listen to the awesomesauce we have here. Crossed fingers on changed Modern version.

  • Reply

In the background of the second video, I can sort of imagine the guy going *fist pump* YES! after he saw that he got an S rank. That might be why he took his hand off of the 3DS.

  • Reply

Oh my god, that music is amazing! After that shite doomsday remix too. Dimps may suck at level design but when it comes to boss fights and music, they’re on top

  • Reply

Alright, in case nobody cleared this up, the music played during the Big Arm fight is The Doomsday & Super Mecha Sonic, not Death Egg Act 2’s mech, Knuckles’ Mecha Sonic, and Sonic 3’s Big Arm.

    • Reply

Wanna take a crack at that again?

  • Reply

There better be a Sound Test in all versions. Not sure if I’ll get 3DS version though.

  • Reply

The Big Arm remix is too awesome beyond words……also, I can’t tell if they made the boss easier or the player actually knows what he’s doing….

    • Reply

If it’s the latter, then that would be a rarity among leaked Sonic game footage

  • Reply

Ha Ha Ha, Seems as though they got a better player for the Big Arm video. ^^ That boss song remix is great, With that song being one of my personal favorites from the classic sonic games, it’s good to see it included.

  • Reply

Weren’t we suppose to get Launch Base Zone for Sonic 3?

    • Reply

That was speculation on the fans’ part and never official.

      • Reply

I just figured since the Sonic 3 boss they’re using is Big Arm, it would make more sense that they actually DID use Launch Base.

  • Reply

Disorienting level design, awkward enemy placement, and a guy who refuses to boost (or at least use the slide technique) makes Act 2 look a bit lackluster.

I’ve seen a run of that level where they tear Act 2 apart and make it there metaphorical b!tch. Don’t blame the level ALL the way guys. Blame the factors that make it bad.

  • Reply

DUDE…. I wanna hit this guy…. BAD, How do you NOT know how to spindash or boost? How do you suck that bad?

    • Reply

well…he is trying to record it descretely while playing. You wanna hit someone for leaking levels for your viewing pleasure? Sure thing brah

  • Reply

the hell. That guy shouldve took more time on that Big Arm boss! I was tappin my feet to that BGM remix
