Sonic CD Can Do Anything to Several Platforms, First Trailer

Ready for a blast to the past?

Sega is bringing the well-loved Sega CD time-traveling Sonic adventure to nearly every platform under the sun including PSN, Xbox Live Arcade, ‘PC Digital Distribution (likely Steam and other services), iOS, Android, and Windows Phone 7. The title isn’t the usual port job with the ugly blue borders seen in Sega’s Vintage Collection series, including true widescreen support thanks to community member The Taxman’s Retro Engine.

It goes without saying (but will be said anyway) that achievements will be supported, in case you want to show off your massive Sonic CD skills to the world. Additional features, according to The Taxman, include a soundtrack that loops properly along with the option to choose if you want the original style Sonic CD Spin Dash or one closer to Sonic 2‘s spin dash. Choose wisely as it also affects the behavior of the camera in-game.

The trailer further brings an additional surprise that the International soundtrack (read: the soundtrack the U.S. didn’t get) will be included in the release. It’s currently unknown if you can choose which soundtrack plays during the game. The game is due out during the Holidays later this year.

Hm, wait a minute. Did Sonic Retro put THEIR WORK into OFFICIAL STORES? Is that what I understood?

I’m not sure if Taxman qualifies as ‘Sonic Retro’ as a whole, but a community member did get Sega to commercially license one of his works, yes.

And that makes me very happy for this. Maybe SEGA will start to keep a lookout for professionals on Sonic Retro, maybe?

    …toot toot Sonic Warrior!

Despite Sonic CD’s convoluted level design, I do enjoy it and will pick it up on IOS.

Will it work well on my PC?

All you need to say is that you can change the jump sound effect and I will cum.

And not only an ugly port. That’s the thing I really love.

Looks friggin brilliant! One question though is why not the Virtual Console?

Blame Nintendo’s file size limit on titles on their service. 40MB max.

Why not get Sonic Gems Collection? It is worth it for Sonic CD alone.

good news about the PC port, it’s about time we get a working PC port since the old win95 build won’t work on my win7 laptop!

    I violently came.

I’mma gettin’ it on PSN and might also get it on PC’s Hot Steamy Gaming Shit; Steam.

Hahaha, the PC port is essentially his own fan-remake.

    Whoa, whoa, whoa.

    IT’S NOT A DODGY PORT?!

Sega, I am so, SO proud of you right now.

I’m also pretty proud of Taxman. When I first saw his work putting Sonic CD on the Itouch, I thought it was impressive, but thought that SEGA would never be smart enough to actually acknowledge and use it. Then this happens.

Sega… You’re doing it right. Nuff said.

Cool, but i preffer the Spencer Nielsen soundtrack

I see i’m not the only one surprised sega has adopted the retro engine o.o
And yay, retro engine sonic cd for android, might be my first actual purchase in the market :3

And here I am, stuck with a Wii. At least a PC version is confirmed, too.

Maybe they picked the JP/EU music because the Taxman is Australian. Until about 1999 I had no idea what the hell Sonic Boom was cause we got the JP soundtrack downunder.

Maybe they will use the retro engine to finally bring a nice version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles to the iPhone and the PSN. Rather than a shabby port.I’m supporting this wise move of Sega’s as much as i can, PSN, iPhone and PC Download. Will make up for the 2 previous USA soundtrack ones i had to endure, and i wont have to lug out the ‘ol Mega CD anymore for the nice soundtrack 😀

I’d rather have some akin to what Sir BlobVanDam cooked up. If you all know what I mean

And now i get it when iizuka said: AH Sonic Retro!!
    😀

Any chance the Taxman can get SEGA to take over the Sonic 2 HD project and release it on consoles?

Will there be an option to change those horrible Sonic CD sound effects?

    • Reply

i remember sonic cd using exactly the same sound fx from sonic 1, with th exception of the awesome robot ‘future’ and ‘past’ phrases…

      • Reply

I was referring to the ear-shattering jump and skid sounds. The 1-up “yes” sound is annoying too, but I can live with it. That jump sound, however…

Will pay double if they add Knuckles and Tails. Doubt they will though. Lol

      • Reply

Well… I guess technically they can because it’s based on the retro engine…

Do we have any idea on when exactly it will be released? I can’t see it out After generations. Sonic 4 was also advertised as “holiday” and “late 2010” and was released in October. Is there a chance we’ll see sonic cd in October as well?

I was looking through the small text at the end and noticed that it said KINECT… i don’t know how the small text works or whatever but i hope that means shoehorned in kinect controls for x-box’s. Nintendo ftw.

    “See how it all started”

Apparently Sonic CD is the first Sonic game, not Sonic 1.

    • Reply

they did that probably because the guys who made sonic cd (SEGA Japan) said that it was essentially a sega cd remake of sonic 1, so technically there are two versions of sonic 1.

It’s really awesome to see SEGA using a fan-made engine, but … what’s different exactly?

Outside of changing how you spindash and possibly changing which soundtrack to listen to, what’s the difference?

    • Reply

There isn’t supposed to be one. The idea is the engine tries to duplicate how the classic games handled. Games like Retro Sonic Nexus are examples of games running it.
That said, remember that this is a Sega of America thing and doesn’t affect Sega of Japan. It won’t be happening in Episode 2.

      • Reply

I didn’t mean any radical changes like adding the homing attack. I just wanted to know if there was going to be any difference between the original Sonic CD and THIS Sonic CD

It’s cool that Sonic CD is getting another re-release, with the original Japanese Soundtrack. However…. Now I’m little worried that The Taxman won’t release Retro Sonic Nexus now. Case in point, the creator of another fangame, Redigit, who made Super Mario Bros X. When Valve bought his other fangame, Terraria Online, he completely discarded SMBX. Now knowing that the blog for RSN is gone, it makes me wonder.

    • Reply

RSN is shelved. It’s logical that a person focuses on a title that will further his or her career instead of a fan game that will… make a small group of fans happy. That doesn’t mean the project is dead per se, as Taxman has put quite a bit of time and heart into that project, but don’t expect it any time soon.
