Sonic Adventure 2 was the last Sonic game on a Sega system, the first to be ported to a Nintendo system, and what many consider the last great hurrah of the Sonic series. So it was no surprise when yesterday the first trailer for City Escape‘s inclusion in Sonic Generations came out. For those wondering how the level looks beyond the minute preview, once again Gamespot has come to your aid. Earlier today, the site’s live coverage of E3 showcased most of the level for both Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic, the classic being a delightful romp that is able to prove that classic Sonic can work in environments we’re not used to, and skateboard the only way one should – extreme and in the 90’s.
The Modern Sonic playthrough is also an effective homage to the original level, keeping many of the set pieces of the original Dreamcast level while keeping things fresh. And just look at the truck. It’s gone insane. No wonder Modern Sonic needs that boost…
All in all, the game looks like it’s still shaping up to be something special. Thanks to Dusk Golem for putting these segments of the stream up on YouTube, and later on we’ll update when Gamespot uploads their copy of the stream, which also includes footage from Green Hill.

This is sick! I hear a techno version of Escape from the City. The level design looks awesome. However, I have some kinda bad news about 3DS. Sadly there’s some gameplay from the Modern Sonic sections.

And the problem with NSMB is?
It looks nothing like NSMB and even if it did whats the problem with that? NSMB looks terrific for a Wii game. If you don’t like it then don’t buy it, it’s simple as that really.
Putting 3D objects into a 2D environment makes it look out of place. In the DS version of NSMB, they did the exact same thing. And I never said NSMB looked bad I said the style reminded me of it as in is similar.
Can’t be that early. I mean, the game comes out later this year. There really isn’t that much development time left, and even an Alpha version isn’t radically different from the Beta version. The demos they show at E3 display what you can expect, not what they’re building on.
If the 3DS bombs look on the bright side, 360 and PS3 will have more thought in their level designs and that’s where it really matters.
The one playing the game in the footage has played the game a ton of times before, he makes it look easy.
Also, we don’t know when in the game the level appears, it could be from early in the game.
I love how people keep saying “it looks too easy” like Sonic 1, 2 and 3 were comparable to Contra or Ninja Gaiden! The first 3 Sonics are piss easy and this doesn’t look any easier than the original games. It only started getting harder when Sonic & Knuckles arrived.
I wish I could hear the music clearly, it sounds great!

I feel the same way about the sound effect. The only reason I can think of is that grabbing a clear sample of the jump sound in Sonic 1/2/3k might be harder since the sound must be emulated. The CD sound effect is a premade file that they can easily get access to. I’m no rom hacker or anything so I’m going off guesswork.
Surely the original jump sound samples are still stored somewhere at Sega? But to be honest I like the new jump sound, it sounds more like the jump sound from Sonic CD.
Why would it be harder to use the original sound? You can download the classic trilogy sound jumping sound off the internet, so why would it be hard for them to use it? As long as they don’t add the CD skid stop sound I’ll be happy.
Wow. Wooooow. I feel smart. I didn’t even notice the Modern City Escape video. Looks really solid, gonna be fun to play.
I was looking at classic noticing the horizontal derp design and thinking “PLEASE don’t let this devolve into Modern sonic’s 2D segments galore”
And it didn’t. It took a goddamn truck crashing trough to justify it, but it sure didn’t look bad at all.

When G.U.N. failed to get Sonic last time. Or maybe it is this “new villain”
I think it’s just a poor ass excuse to incorporate the strafe move in. That truck was able to bust my ass plenty of times on that level in the original SA2 and it didn’t even have those sawblades. If it didn’t need them then, it doesn’t need them now.
But then people will complain they just rehashed the truck. They can’t win either way.
Both versions looks very good, but somewhat bland in the Modern Sonic for me.
Alright, so they’re fixing it up, acknowledging past games, working with the gameplay, but I still have a pressing question: Why doesn’t Classic Sonic actually hit the robots he’s jumping on? That bothered me in Sonic 4:Ep 1, as well.

Why is there so much 2D in the modern gameplay? SA2 managed 3D platforming just fine and classic sonic’s stages are entirely 2D. Why can’t modern be entirely 3D?

Shoot, I’m a bit disappointed, I thought that since the two Sonics were traveling through time that City Escape would be moderately the same as it was in SA2. I definitely saw the similarities between modern Sonic’s City Escape and the one from SA2, but I wish it was more so. I’m sure I’ll grow to love it, I mean, that’s how I am with all Sonic games *cough* Sonic 4 *cough* On a plus note, the graphics look amazing 😀
If they did a like for like remake of the stage then you may as well play the original. The way they’ve done it is really good in my view, all the important parts of the stage are there with some new things thrown in to keep it fresh. Don’t get me wrong I’m not getting overhyped for the game as Sega have a habbit of making games look awesome and then releasing utter dog shit. Sonic 06 anyone?
Aw, gross. Boost-face is tainting and defiling City Escape. Jeez, look, he can’t even turn. He has to land on stuff and abuse the Homing Attack to change direction. I vote for Adventure Sonic!!!
I personally like his turning physics. But you’re right, the Homing attack has REALLY gotten old, and that boosting has got to go.
Boosting is completely optional though, I very rarely used it in Unleashed.
Fair enough. I found the Homing Attack more irritating. It was kind of cool in the Adventure series, but then it went amok. I personally would like a Sonic game more like Metroid or Banjo-Tooie, with lots of backtracking and exploration, instead of the current roller-coaster-like level design.
