Sonic Makes a Return To Television With a New CG Cartoon Series: Sonic Boom

sonicboomteaser

SEGA just suddenly announced that there will be a new comedic CG animated series called Sonic Boom. This show will be Sonic’s fifth cartoon on TV, but if this teaser image is anything to go by this will be the first to heavily change the character designs. I can’t be the only one getting flashbacks to Loonatics Unleashed

Sonic Boom will air during the fall of 2014, with the first season consisting of 52 eleven-minute episodes. The cartoon is being produced by SEGA of America and Genao Productions. You can read the full press release after the jump for more info. Continue Reading

Way Past Cool! The Original Saturday Morning Sonic Turns 20 Today

When I was a spry, young lad, I could still wake up every Saturday morning at the crack of dawn. Filled with exuberance for a block of time that would soon be lost to the ages with the popularization of children’s programming on basic cable, I would arise to make sure I wouldn’t miss a second of what was to be broadcast. Fox Kids, One Saturday Morning, Kids WB, even the not-aimed-at-me TNBC block…from local programming to the last remnants of syndicated tales involving the Hardy Boys, my elementary years were spent absorbing half hour after half hour of useless information.

On this day twenty years ago – September 18th, 1993 for those who aren’t paying attention – my focus was once again squarely on the television. Sitting in bed like I did every Saturday, my eyes glazed over watching my tiny moving picture box, the same one that I had played hours upon hours of the original Sonic the Hedgehog titles. But that day was something special. Something tremendously exciting. What was it? Well, the cast of Hanging With Mr. Cooper kindly told me the night before during T.G.I.F…

Yes. Sonic the Hedgehog was now on the airwaves.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, and by that I mean not go to Sonic-related websites in the past few days, you know that Eddie Lebron released his Sonic fan film last week. And if you’ve seen you’ll probably think that it’s impressive for a low-budget fan project or that it’s crap. Or you actually have a different opinion than the majority of the internet, but that’d just be silly. Anyway monday links.

Sonic Desperately Tries to Look Cool on Wreck-It Ralph Poster (UPDATE: more posters)

Disney recently released a new trailer of Wreck-It Ralph, which features Sonic desperately trying to look cool by doing an old pose he did for Sonic 2006. Eggman appears on the poster as well along with other characters like Qbert, Zangief, M. Bison and Qbert. You can click on the poster on the left for a bigger version.

Sonic appears in the new trailer as well. You can see that one here. He only appears of like one second so blink and you might miss him. He also appears in a different scene in the Japanese trailer for an even shorter amount of time. He appears at about the 0:36 timestamp. In the scene it looks like he joined a party with a bunch of characters from the fictional game the main character of the movie comes from, Fix-It Felix Jr. You can see Wreck-It Ralph in theaters from November 2nd.

UPDATE: Disney has released four more posters for the movie, with one of them having Sonic front and center and another one with Eggman standing behind M. Bison. Another one of the posters also has that rhino boss from Altered Beast, so that’s neat. Also, yes Sonic does actually look kinda cool in the new poster, but my point that he is desperately trying to do so still stands! You can see the new posters in the gallery below.

Sonic to Appear in Wreck-It Ralph

It’s no surprise that Sonic will have a cameo in Disney’s upcoming movie Wreck-It Ralph. With so many classic videogame characters appearing in it Sonic was bound to be included, especially with Eggman making an appearance as well. Now we’ve got a confirmation that he’s not just going to sit or walk by like a lot of the cameos.

At the Comic-Con panel for Wreck-It Ralph the first 10 minutes of the film were shown, and in those 10 minutes a PSA was shown with Sonic explaining that if a game character dies in a game that’s not their own they die for good. Seemingly a reference to the Sonic Sez segments from Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. There’s no confirmation on who will be voicing Sonic in the movie, we already know that Zangief (from the Street Fighter games) isn’t voiced by his normal voice actor in the movie so there’s some doubt on if Roger Craig Smith will be playing the role.

You can expect to see Wreck-It Ralph in theaters from November 2nd, 2012 in the US.

Eggman Appears Along With Other Video Game Villains in Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph

Any animation fan should fondly remember Robert Zemeckis’ tribute to the golden age of cartoons, Who Framed Roger Rabbit. To those who have never seen the movie (and you should be ashamed of yourself if you haven’t), the movie contained many cameos from various cartoons with characters like Donald Duck and Daffy Duck sharing screentime together. Disney’s upcoming movie Wreck-It Ralph does something similar (though it presumably does not contain live-action actors), but instead of being about cartoons it’s about videogames.

The movie is about that angry looking fellow shown in the movie’s logo, Wreck-It Ralph, who appears in a fictional arcade game called Fix-It Felix. His job is to destroy the buildings that the game’s titular hero has to fix. Because Ralph doesn’t like being the bad guy anymore and wants to be good he gets out of the game and jumps into other genres like first person shooters and kart racers. Though the games he gets into are made up for the movie, not all of the characters are. Like Roger Rabbit, famous characters from videogame history appear throughout the film.

One scene in particular has Ralph in a support group for villains, pictured in the above image (taken from Disney’s D23 Magazine). As you can see Eggman appears in this scene along with Bowser, Dr. Wily and Zangief. If he’s just going to sit there doing nothing or if he actually has a speaking role we don’t know, but it’s still neat to see him appear in a big Disney flick. Considering the nature of the film, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Sonic make a small cameo as well. Of course if he doesn’t matter because the movie sounds awesome as it is. You can find Wreck-It Ralph in theaters from November 2nd this year.

Sonic Christmas Blast Free to Stream on Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime is an ever growing service. Starting as a free shipping service, Amazon has added in benefits over time including offering a library service for Kindle devices as well as free streaming videos. While the season may be over, it’s not too late to relive the Christmas spirit with DiC’s Animated Christmas Special. Of course, it’s really just the Inspector Gadget Christmas Special followed by Sonic Christmas Blast. It’s at least in the highest quality possible, and it’s free!* What a steal!

You may recall that David the Lurker covered the special as part of the 12 Days of Sonic Retro Christmas. Those of you who have Amazon Prime memberships, why not take up on his suggestion? Keep in mind that the Sonic cartoon shows up directly after the Inspector Gadget special, and never mind that Princess Sally from the SatAM series appears for some reason, or the sloppy animation, or that Santa can’t seem to protect himself from Dr. Claw AND Dr. Robotnik on two separate occasions. Pretty sloppy St. Nick…

*Free with $79 purchase of Amazon Prime membership.

Various Animators Make Sonic Run Like an IdiotVarios Animadores Hacen Sonic Correr Como Un Idiota

There are some great Tumblr blogs around, like Things Organized Neatly or Feeding Objects. Joining these is a new blog called Dumb Running Sonic:

This started with Magical Game Time’s Zac Gorman making a simple gif animation, which prompted Nedroid to make one as well. The latter challenged others to make dumb running Sonics as well and the result was this amazing new meme, with animations like the one above. (Which was made by Boxer Hockey’s Tyson Hesse.) You can see more over at the Tumblr blog.

Greatest AoStH Animation Cel of All Time Now For Sale

Occasionally, there’s more than the standard “SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 FOR GENESIS ~@SUPER RARE!@~” being sold on the international auction house that is eBay–for instance, right now there’s an ex-Sega employee selling a ton of official t-shirts, so if you ever wanted a Sega Frontline Marketing shirt, now’s your chance. However, what has appeared for sale today is quite possibly the greatest Sonic-related merchandise I have ever seen on the Internet: a frame of AoStH Robotnik. Naked.

Bidding as of this writing is at $10 USD. Go get it. You know you want it.
