SEGA Delays a Sonic Game Without There Being a Public Outcry for the First Time Ever

Update: Of course right after I put up this article I realize that Sonic 4: Episode 1 was delayed by a few months. Welp. Still, at least this time it wasn’t because there was a public outcry.
What do you get when you mix fire and ice? Apparently SEGA realizing that releasing yet another unfinished Sonic game is a bad idea. For the first time ever (seriously, correct me if I’m wrong on this cause I can’t think of any other time when SEGA’s done this) the company has delayed a Sonic game in order to make sure that it’s polished enough for release, with Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice now releasing in 2016 “when it’s ready”. You know, as opposed to previously released Sonic games that clearly weren’t ready for release.
It’s always been pretty clear that Sonic games are often rushed to make the deadline, even back with Sonic 3 & Knuckles when they split the game into two releases due to time constraints. So SEGA actually letting the developers take their time to finish the game is hopefully not just a one time thing. So it is a little reassuring that SEGA’s blog post mentions that they think that making sure a game is ready for release isn’t just important for Fire & Ice, but also all future Sonic games. We hope that that’s true, cause we really, really don’t want another Sonic 2006 or Rise of Lyric.

I think they delayed Sonic 4 before.

It’s a miracle. This is great.

Sonic Adventure and Sonic Heroes were also delayed before launch. No public outcry over either of those (at least, not before the delays).

Well, at least someone’s concerned about quality issues in the games now.
How about fixing Sonic Runners next?

I’m kind of scared. The idea of a Sega that doesn’t mindlessly rush things is an almost alien concept at this point.

If it wasn’t a Sonic Boom game, I’d definitely be happy about this.
But since it’s Sonic Boom, I hope this game still does badly and flops just as hard as Rise of Lyric and Shattered Crystal did.

      Why?

        because Sonic boom sucks

Shattered Crystal’s only real crime was being dull rather than a technical mess. Sanzaru at least deserves a second chance to see if they can improve their work. BRB however turned out a right mess, though it sounds like A LOT went wrong there (porting an engine that has no business being on Wii U not withstanding.)

They’re still making this thing? I’d thought they gave up after all the bad reviews of Lyric…
And to think I wanted to buy that game day 1 to play it with my friend…

Well, I suppose it can’t really hurt at this point. At least Sega seemed to have learned something from past experiences. It’s not the first time they’ve “learned from their mistakes” in this department though, so forgive me if i don’t hold my breath on whether or not they keep it up in the years to come.

“without there being a public outcry for the first time ever”
Hmm, probably because nobody fucking GIVES a shit about sonic boom! =D
Anyway, as relieved as I am to hear that SEGA is finally giving it’s hired developers a reasonable time pace for once, i’m still left with a sour taste in my mouth knowing that it’s Boom…

Speak for yourself, please. Despite the flaws in Sonic 2006 it’s still fun, Rise of Lyric on the other hand can go jump in a cliff for all I care.
Oh and btw, it Sonic 3 wasn’t the first Sonic game to be rushed but also Sonic 2 and even Sonic 1 were rushed according to interviews with Naka and other members, hence why the Japanese version of Sonic 1 had some improvements like the extra ring in Labyrinth Zone, and why Hidden Palace wasn’t implemented in the original version of Sonic 2.

I think you’re in the minority there. :V
And I know about Sonic 1 and 2 being rushed as well, it’s just easier to give Sonic 3 & Knuckles as an example.
