Sonic After the Sequel Releases Today

Another fine release by Lake Feperd (and his crew of musical co-horts) today as Sonic After the Sequel which is a fan-made sequel to Sonic Before the Sequel which was a prequel to Sonic the Hedgehog 2.  You can visit this link here to grab the game for yourself. Pretty impressive considering the previous release was only a year ago, yet retains its own unique level themes, branching paths and more. In addition, Lake Feperd has announced a few months ago that he is working on a new Sonic fan game titled Sonic Chrono Adventure which takes inspiration from other titles such as Sonic CD and involves time travel and more open world gameplay.

But don’t get ahead of yourself, check out After the Sequel today! While you’re waiting, you can view the release trailer shown above.

“sequel to Sonic 2”? Don’t you mean Prequel?

      Yep, ugh. Fixed

Hey anyone, question: what program would I need to run this game? I’m new to PC gaming so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

This is a standalone game. You’ll just extract the *.exe file, preferably in it’s own directory, and just run it as is.

Hands down, the best non-official Sonic game I’ve ever played. I beat it in one go, and it never became boring. The excellent level design, mechanics, and music could keep any gamer captivated for hours.

Didn’t care for the dubstep in this, and the boss battles were downright bad. It would have also been nice for the game to not reset my joystick every time I had to back out to the main menu when encountering a game stopping glitch.

But whatever, as far as fan games go this one has a pretty good presentation and is decently playable. While I may not like some of the music in here, it’s at least good to hear something that isn’t rehashed from another game.

I tried, I really tried. I downloaded BTS too just to see if maybe I liked it more, and this is one of the rare instances where I have to put a game down because I’m fed up with it. Why did anyone think it was a good idea to put two water stages back-to-back and then put in some of the absolute worst hit-boxing for the air bubbles?

I can’t begin to count the amount of times I’ve jumped for one and passed right through it, because apparently you have to hit the bubble at the apex of a jump and dead center. They also seem to take irregular amounts of time to spawn.

I’ve struggled to like either of these games and I just plain give up. Neither of these are very good.

Just beat the game, overall excellent.

Sometimes the bosses were a little “meh”, but other than that, excellent level designs with fun gimmicks and a Hell of a soundtrack.

BtS was good, but it has some flaws and lame devel design in some parts. But Lake Feperd learned of those mistakes, so AtS is a much improvement. Also I loved how every act feel unique, specially with those gimmicks

Best fangame I ever played, good job Lake.

Also tell to your musicans that they are the best.

Thank you for this incredible Game, amazing work. Some level were a bit long and repetitive, but other than that, so much effort. Incredible music! Need to find the soundtrack. Agreed, Best non official sonic game i have ever played also.

It’s almost criminal that this game is free, but if it is, then it’s worth breaking the law for.

Obligatory “Where’s the link to the soundtrack?” post.

No really Before The Sequel’s biggest selling point was the soundtrack, so it’d be sad if it’s predecessor didn’t get a release.

It’s coming. Give the team a little more time.

I think some of the creativity and concepts were ASTOUNDING! Those giant fighting lizards, the train act of Foliage Furnace, and the battle on the drill heading down into the earth was EPIC! However, as good as a lot of these ideas were, SOME of the execution was a bit off, and sometimes it was kind of hard to figure out what you were supposed to be doing. The music was incredible, though! The way it built up the action and the tone, and lended atmosphere to the zones was VERY well done! The feeling in the highway zone was incredible! It was active, yet lonely… especially Act 2.

Also, I’m a BIIG fan of Maxie’s original Sonic songs, so to hear Combat Night Zone start playing was a HUUGE surprise!

Besides some of the execution being off, and some of the custom sprite work being a little bland, I think this game was definitely one of the most memorable Sonic fan games I have ever played! I look forward to seeing what you guys make next!

PS: One more vote for soundtrack download!

Who’s the bad fanbase NOW, Internet?! :V

These fangames are always awesome, and rarely hit-or-miss (maybe minus the original Sonic Robo Blast. eh.)

I really love the game. It’s fun, fast, and creative. I had a laugh when I saw Sonic had a sugar rush!

But seriously Lake, lay off the Kirby.

Why aren’t these guys remaking Sonic Chaos, Triple Trouble or 4 EP I & II?
I mean, they know how to fix whatever issues they have to fix. (giving some gimmick to the levels that overshades the Homing Attack chains in S4, fixing some bugs in the other games, dunno.)

Massive improvement over the first game! Definitely the best Sonic Worlds based fangame I’ve played so far. Looking forward to Chrono Adventure!

Anyone having trouble with cutscenes may need to install the Internet Explorer version of Flash.

    I still can’t play the game. 🙁
And there is no way I can extract the exe file. I tried, but it shut down my Google Chrome in the process… 8I

When I played this, I felt the same way I did when I was a child playing Sonic 1 for the first time.
Thank you for reminding me of that happiness.

Very mixed on this, so I’ll keep it to the point:

    – Old school Sonic games don’t need cutscenes. They make it look cheap.

    – Thought the music was great but then found out it was just lifted from other games, so that’s no good.

    – Sonic’s constantly muddled sprites are annoying. He looks different walking to running to jumping. Make up your mind.

    – The first two Zones were creative and fun and original. From there on in it was obvious the creator ran out of ideas. Especially when the level design became super poor, Sonic started using Kirby powers and the last boss was an Owl.

    – All of the bosses were terrible. A dead giveaway was when you fight mecha sonic and mecha tails in the first few levels.

For me, this was a game that started well but went quickly downhill into the usual crap fan game zone. Lifted music, poor level design, crap sprites. A shame really as the potential seemed massive in the first 15 minutes or so.

      Citation needed.

-Cutscenes weren’t necessary, I agree, but their presence doesn’t make the game bad.

-The music wasn’t lifted from other games, are you just making reasons up to hate on the game? Some of the music was re-used from its predecessor, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that and you’re delusional if you think that way, and a lot of it was made especially for this game anyways.

-Sprites looked perfectly consistent to me. Seems like more making stuff up.

-I seriously disagree with your statement that he obviously ran out of ideas after two zones. It feels like another made up critique to knock this game. He included one (1) Kirby power, mainly for one (1) act. It was a neat cameo, it was hardly him running out of ideas and just taking stuff from other games.

-I do agree the boss design was subpar, which is the first critique that you didn’t seem to make up. It was the single lacklustre gameplay element, though.

Overall I feel like you didn’t want to like this game because it was a fan game, and when you couldn’t find sufficient reason to dislike it, just started making things up. The game is overall very solid, with the only real weakness being the bosses. It does have a few glitches, but that’s to be expected from a fan game that doesn’t have a whole team dedicated to testing it, and the glitches that do exist aren’t that big of a deal.

Hey, jus wana say I think this dude is being given some harsh criticism… I think this is a fantastic achievement for someone who is basically sat at home at their desk loving sonic, with some nice ideas that he would like to share… He made this for us to enjoy for free… so be a bit more grateful. Constructive criticism is nice, but some of these comments are awful. I’m a teacher, and what I get my class to do is what we call three stars and a wish- tell the producer three things you liked, and then one you think could have been improved. Keeps up positive moral and makes the world a nicer place. Well done Lake and Co. What I played briefly looked ace 🙂
