Lots of New Sonic 4: Episode 2 Stuff

I don’t know what the deal is between the press and Sonic games at events. For some reason they are terrible at playing them on camera, with Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 being no exception. Most videos released so far of people playing the game either have them not knowing what they’re supposed to do or falling into bottomless pits, so it’s nice to have a full playthrough of the first act of White Park Zone where the player actually knows how to play a videogame:

Last week SEGA held an event where they showcased all of their upcoming digital releases. From this came some new screenshots showing more of the game’s boss battles and a few interviews with Takashi Iizuka with quite a bit of new information on Episode 2 and Sonic’s future. All of this can be seen after the jump.

First up is Eurogamer’s interview. Iizuka claims here that they did listen to the feedback and that the physics from the Mega Drive games have been replicated in Episode 2, the video below (taken by Youtube user ECLIPSc70 at GDC) shows that the physics have indeed been improved and that the game feels a bit more like the classics. The other big news is that there are currently no plans for a third episode and that they will first look at how the game performs before moving on.

Droidgamers also had a preview where they tell that the Android version of the game will have “two exclusive bonus levels that you will have to hunt down.” Unless they replaced two of the special stages, maybe this is what the red rings scattered around the stages are for?

Spong’s interview with Iizuka has some new details as well. The reason why Episode 2 wasn’t released last year is that they didn’t want any attention taken away from the game by Sonic Generations and. Both games were also in development at the same time. In non-Sonic 4 related news is that Knuckles’ Chaotix probably won’t be getting an enhanced port like Sonic CD did. Takashi also laughs at the rumored Wii U game Sonic Dimensions and calls it a hoax, so we won’t be seeing that either.

Other media outlets also have new articles on the game, but don’t have any new info that other articles didn’t already report. Like mentioned before SEGA released a bunch of new screenshots, including more of the first boss battle and the fight against Metal Sonic. These can be viewed in the gallery below.

Well, in all fairness, us press types are also playing a game for the first time! I’d like to see your first times playing through a game recorded on video! 😉

Though I got to play the game at Sega Mobile’s GDC media day and yeah, physics are WAY better. Feel way more like the console games – or you at least can’t run up a wall at like no speed. That alone is an improvement. I like the new Sonic/Tails stuff, at least in the demo levels I was shown.

This should’ve been Sonic 4. Episode 1 to me is just a Rick Roll to be honest. Love what they doing with this game though. 🙂

As much as I’m meh about Sonic 4 as a whole, I think they should at least finish it properly. I mean, even if classic fans (or most, or some of us) don’t like it, there are other fans who did.

…now if this is just blackmail to get people to buy this game… then for shame, SEGA.

    Oh boy, BOOSTERS

Nah, just kidding. Hope they act like Sonic 2’s!

Well, I think it’s best for Sega to quit while they’re ahead and not make an Episode 3. After all, I think $20 is enough for a classic Sonic game. Sonic 4: Episode 2 is looking awesome. Cannot wait for it to come out on Steam 😀

    no K’s Chaotix? what a shame :/
I know that the game isn’t that special, but still i would like to own it.

I dunno… Sonic CD’s redevelopment was mostly handled by SEGA of America. Iizuka wasn’t even entirely aware of the revival, from what I’ve heard.

Some thing I’ve been waiting to hear is news about Amy since this game draws more from Sonic 2 and more importantly Sonic CD. I see every reason to have Amy in there since she was a big part of that game and, a large portion of the fanbase still want her in there. But other wise I’ve seen some good things but still Amy should be the next big priority right now.bringing back Metal Sonic just doesn’t feel right since in game Amy did appear before him.Well excuse my rambalings

Looks good.  Only complaints are forced use of Sonic & Tail’s 69ing attack, and the unnecessary amount of pitfalls.  Other than that, I’m happy.

Absolutely no tension has been relieved.

    THE SUSPENSE.

Personally i like the direction there going with Sonic 4, cause anythings better then say Big the Cat the Game eh?

nice but its a so disappointing that tails its not playable solo

So Sonic Dimentions is a hoax? That’s a relief, the desription on the game sounds way to gimmicky. hopefully its modern sonic style still maybe like colors, just sonic and awesome 3-D and 2-D and more stages. and hopefully that’ll be the lst one where sonic’s solo

Oh and i vote on having a Ep. 3 because seeing how it is, im betting knuckles will be involved and will take Metal Sonic’s place. an maybe Ep. 4 is gona be a total fresh game.

So far, my only complaints are the amount of springs. Other than that, that game looks like it might make up for Episode 1. I’m hoping for the best 😀

Yeah, this is definitely looking oodles better than episode 1, praise to Sega for turning it around.

As for holding off on a potential episode three, it makes sense to me from a marketing stand-point. I think the idea is to hold off and see if episode two actually pleases the fans this time around, because if it didn’t, then there wasn’t much point trying to get something right they failed to the first two times, not to mention the bad publicity that would probably be building up by then.

And what a relief to hear Sonic Dimensions is a hoax. Did not like the sound of that game at all, honestly.

Well so far I’m liking the way it looks! disappointed that there might not be another episode after this, but fingers crossed this get’s some really excellent feedback and SEGA are convinced to make Episode 3, then maybe I’d call it a day for Sonic 4… then start Sonic 5!! lol XD

The wall walking still looks like it hasn’t been fixed yet

Signs over bottomless pits? Because it doesn’t look easy enough already? Also, team attacks? What is this, Sonic Heroes? 😛

You would be very surprised how many people still fall for them.

I’m still hoping the physics are fixed. Please Sonic Team…

So they want to see the feedback from the fans to determine the fate of Epsiode 3?

…and knowing the majority of the Sonic Fanbase, we probably won’t see Episode 3…

I hate, hate, H-A-T-E that they haven’t done away with Sonic uncurling off of ramps, or the lame homing attack bubble chains.

This is looking more and more like Sonic Rush 3: Episode 2 by the day.

I’ll take DLC stages for Generations on PC, please…

    @KingmanIII

Where is the uncurling? I don’t see it.

    @KingmanIII
They said they did away with uncurling.

    I don’t either.
The physics from what ive seen look fixed.
Though i do agree with him that we do need more dlc for generations. Wait untill summer my friend. That is what we did with unleashed.

I’d love to see DLC for Generations.

Maybe add a new stage for each era.

my bad guys…just had a knee-jerk reaction to Sonic running (not rolling) off the ramps and breaking out of his running motion

Still…this games feels too “forced” like Episode I did — too many bubble chains and spring sequences — I hope I’m wrong but at least from the footage I’ve viewed so far I’m not seeing the multiple pathways that made the vintage games and Generations so enjoyable.
